It's been a hectic week in the MTG card market! Final Fantasy x MTG, the best-selling Magic set of all time, is in full swing; Edge of Eternities had its first round of official reveals tend days ago; and during the weekend we've got some unofficial EOE leaks that gave us a further glimpse of what the upcoming โ€œMagicโ€ฆ in Space!โ€ set will bring.

So, before we proceed: Spoiler warning! While we'll look at the price spike of a blue creature from Phyrexia: All Will Be One, the spike is in part connected to the unofficial EOE leaks from the last couple of days.

With that out of the way, let's get to today's hot card: Tekuthal, Inquiry Dominus.

Tekuthal, Inquiry Dominus started moving up in late May, as Final Fantasy revealed the full decklists for the EDH precons. It started June costing about $8, and reached a $12 peak when FIN launched. And while it it cooled off a bit, then kept rallying until about $15 today, with no sign of stopping.

Why Is Tekuthal, Inquiry Dominus Spiking?

Tekuthal, Inquiry Dominus is a blue creature that growls โ€œHold my beer, kiddo,โ€ whenever your deck needs extra counters.

โ€œTekuthal, Inquiry Dominus says proliferate on it, then it says it again,โ€ notes Tim in our ranking for best superfriends commanders. โ€œDouble abilities like proliferate get you to ultimates fast.โ€

Tekuthal, Inquiry Dominus

That being said, Tekuthal, Inquiry Dominus is not the hottest Commander out there, and it's arguably the runt of litter in the Domini cycle. It's not terribly bad as a proliferate commander, but it's bogged down by its mono-blue commander color identity, which limits your options quite a bit. Youโ€™re stuck in a single color, so you lose access to greenโ€™s proliferation engines and blackโ€™s best poison pieces.

Still, if you like asking โ€œWhy proliferate once when you could do it twice?โ€ Tekuthal is the smug, blue answer, and that makes Tekuthal a bit of a low-key star in the 99. In particular, he's an auto include in Atraxa, Praetors' Voiceโ€˜s infect decks. And now Tekuthal, Inquiry Dominus has found its way into one of the new hot commanders from Final Fantasy: Tidus, Yuna's Guardian, the face commander from the Counter Blitz EDH precon from Final Fantasy.

Tidus, Yuna's Guardian

Tekuthal, Inquiry Dominus started to gain traction by the time Tidus was revealed, and now shows up in about 50% of all Tidus decks according to EDHREC.

Tekuthal, Inquiry Dominusโ€˜s price had a clear spike the weekend that FIN was finally released, but demand for it stayed high afterward, so even after a small deep it kept its upward momentum:

But the price keeps going up โ€“ and what seems to have helped Tekuthal, Inquiry Dominus keep pushing up (besides Final Fantasy's off-the-charts popularity) is poison.

In Space!

Poison? In Standard? More Common Than You Think โ€“ Soon!

We won't get into too much detail in this article, but the gist of it is: According to some unofficial leaks, EOE will poison Standard.

Cards that get extra poison counters on your foes are heating up right now, Tekuthal, Inquiry Dominus included.

And it also helps that one of the (now officially!) revealed EOE precons is all about proliferating. As such, Tekuthal, Inquiry Dominus is finding its way into half of the early brews with Kilo, Apogee Mind, the upcoming face commander from the โ€œCounter Intelligenceโ€ EDH precon.

What Will Happen With Tekuthal, Inquiry Dominusโ€˜s Price?

With the usual caveat that this is not investment advice (always do your own research, folks!), interest in Tekuthal, Inquiry Dominus seems well-sustained. The card is already a well-known tech for counter-heavy decks; TCGplayer's graph shows steady demand, and the increased demand comes from two very different sources: Final Fantasy and Edge of Eternities.

And while Tekuthal, Inquiry Dominus comes from a fairly recent set, Phyrexia: All Will Be One wasn't particularly popular and Tekuthal never saw a reprint since then, making supply relatively scare.

If you want to get ready for some extra proliferate shenanigans, better keep an eye on this phyrexian horror.
