Early Reality Fracture Product Pictures Reveal Vraska’s New Color Identity

The color of Vraska’s Echoverse counterpart from the upcoming Reality Fracture set has been confirmed as Jeskai from an unlikely source: A Commander deck box. Gatherer’s Tavern has a collection of dual-sided deck boxes that represent the Echoverse pairs from FRA, including their mana symbols, and the new Vraska has Jeskai () symbols:

This is a natural pairing since the other Echoverse pairs represent enemy colors—black Liliana against white, red Chandra against blue, etc.

What Could A Jeskai Vraska Do?

Given that the mirrored pairs we’ve seen do very similar things, we can guess that the yet to be revealed Golgari () Vraska and Jeskai Vraska will have similar packages, even with the color discrepancy.

An element that stands out on existing is that nearly all them (except for the uncommon from War of the Spark) have a downtick that destroys a creature. It’s a pretty safe bet that we’ll see a similar ability on Jeskai Vraska tuned for the colors—bouncing or exiling is much appropriate to these new colors. You could probably even spin exiling in a way to mirrors petrification.

Another theme among Vraskas is token creation, though it appears less frequently. With the idea of playing off opposites in mind, I can see the Golgari Vraska making deathtouch tokens, like Vraska, Swarm's Eminence and Vraska the Unseen, while new one creates tokens with lifelink.

Card draw is another commonality, though it often comes with a cost, like life or sacrificing a permanent. Those traits befit the mono-black and Golgari planeswalker, but it seems likely any card draw from the Jeskai Vraska would come with few consequences. It might even come with a boon like a scry or surveil to reflect Jeskai encompassing Fatehold, the school of divination on Hexhaven.

What Does This Mean For the Story?

Though Vraska has yet to appear in the story (only one chapter has been released at time of writing) the change in color identity has major implications, especially for Jace’s relationship with vraska. Based on official art, Vraska will align herself with the Chandra and Ajani and everybody else opposing the Echoverse, which aligns with what we learned in Tarkir: Dragonstorm.

Like the other Echoverse variants, this is likely a “perfected” Vraska Jace dreamed up colored by his biases, and lacking the Golgari color identity might be more impactful for Vraska than other characters because of her backstory. Being part of the Golgari Swarm on Ravnica has colored Vraska’s entire life as she faced extreme prejudice from the Azorius, in part for being a member of the Swarm, in part for being a gorgon, and just cutting that away is horrific. It also plays into a very present idea of Jace’s methodology simply being a reflection of the traumas he’s experienced in his life, following in the footsteps of those who have hurt him—it’s no mistake Hexhaven is overseen by elder sphinxes, and that Jace’s methods are increasingly similar to sphinxes like Azor and Alhammarret. Here, I’d guess he’s come very close to making a Vraska that has more in common with those who have tormented her than who she is.
