Wizards unveiled the decklists for Lorwyn Eclipsed precons, including the Dance of the Elements precon. While Dance of the Elements contains great elementals, several strong cards were absent. These six elementals are excellent upgrades for the deck, and have the potential to spike with the increased focus on elemental Commander decks and Ashling:
- Animar, Soul of Elements
- Tar Fiend
- Skullmulcher
- Foundry Champion
- Ygra, Eater of All
- Flamekin Harbinger
Animar, Soul of the Elements
The most glaring exclusion may be Animar, Soul of Elements. Not only is it one of the most popular elemental commanders, and overall Temur commanders, it has incredible synergy with the face commander, Ashling, the Limitless. Because Ashling gives all your elementals a generic evoke cost of , Animar can reduce it to 0. Thatโs right: No mana for your Avenger of Zendikarโฆmake that two Avengers since Ashling makes a copy after you sacrifice the evoked creature.
Animar was first printed for Commander 2011 in the 99 of the Mirror Mastery precon. Animar has enjoyed immense popularity since its printing, enough to keep its price point around $10, despite reprints in Masters 25 and Double Masters, plus a Secret Lair. The synergy with Ashling might drive up demand, and create a spike.
Tar Fiend + Skullmulcher
Tar Fiend and Skullmulcher share a mechanic that works beautifully with Ashling: Devour! Though infrequently in the spotlight, devour works perfectly with Ashling, the Limitlessโs ability to copy sacrificed elementals. These powerful sacrifice outlets fuel explosive turns by retriggering the enters ability of each elemental you control in addition to the card advantage they innately bring.
Neither of these are particularly big ticket cards, with Tar Fiendโs only printing from Shards of Alara going for around $0.25 and Skullmulcher going for as little as $0.09 due to multiple printings: In addition to its ALA debut, it got reprinted in Double Masters and put on The List. This might be the first time anybody wants to use them in years.
Foundry Champion
Foundry Champion works with Ashling as a finisher. You get two copies of evoked elementals, so Foundry Champion can deal massive damage, considering the best elementals to pair with Ashling are those like Avenger of Zendikar and Omnath, Locus of Rage that produce a wide board.
Foundry Champion is another underrated gem for the deck. Printed only in Gatecrash, with a price of $0.17, decks helmed by Ashling, the Limitless might be ideal for this Boros soldier.
Ygra, Eater of All
Ygra, Eater of All boasts a simple synergy with Ashling: Making your elementals Food provides a sacrifice ability so you can make token copies on demand, provided you have the mana to crack them. It also becomes a substantial threat as every elemental you evoke adds +1/+1 counters to Ygra, leaving your opponents with multiple threats to handle.
Ygra has the most recent printing, debuting just last year with Bloomburrow. Despite that, it holds a strong price around $7 due to its position as one of Magicโs best Food commanders.
Flamekin Harbinger
Perhaps the most puzzling exclusion from Dance of the Elements is Flamekin Harbinger, a typal-themed tutor that finds your best elemental for a mere and a turnโs patience. This card is one of the most potent elemental payoffs and an iconic card from the original Lorwyn set.
The price of Flamekin Harbinger varies by printing; the Planechase edition costs just under a dollar, while Lowryn and The List are just over. It also has a Secret Lair printing going for $7. Maybe Wizards thought we had enough volume, but new art would have been appreciated, and more supply since the stock of elementals looks ready to rise.
