Secrets of Strixhavenโ€™s serialized headliner, Emeritus of Ideation, boasts the highest secondary market price of any card from the set, with some sellers on eBay listing the card for upwards of $20,000. Itโ€™s a price that only comes due to the it being the chase card of the set, but the highest asking prices are overblown compared to serialized cards from other sets.

What Are Headliner Cards?

The double-rainbow foil serialized Emeritus of Ideation is hands-down the rarest card in the set, as only 500 were printed. This Emeritus is the latest headliner, a card printed at a special rarity as the ultimate chase card. Headliners are almost always serialized, though there are exceptions, like Sothera, the Supervoid from Edge of Eternities and Avatar Aang from Avatar: the Last Airbender. Recent serialized headliners include Bitterbloom Bearer from Lorwyn Eclipsed, Mox Jasper from Tarkir: Dragonstorm, and The Aetherspark from Aetherdrift.

Headliners are always the rarest card in a set, even when not serialized. They can only be found in Collector Boosters, and appear in less than 1% of themโ€”so donโ€™t hit the LGS looking to make it big. Scouting for a headliner isnโ€™t much better than snagging a lottery ticket, even if the eBay prices look impressive:

These prices are driven up by scarcity. They also range greatly in price, from a few thousand to that eye-catching $29kโ€”one listing even exceeds $30,000:

Itโ€™s important to consider the price cards are actually selling forโ€”eBay has no sold listings. One listing priced at $3,550 has a handful of bids, wihch indicates the expected value of the card is likely close to the several thousand dollar range rather than the tens of thousand dollars. Since the setโ€™s barely come out, itโ€™s hand to quantify exactly what this card ought to be worth, but we can get an idea by comparing its price to other recent headliners. Iโ€™ll be used TCGplayer for those prices.

How Does Emeritus of Ideation Compare to Other Headliners?

Lorwyn Eclipsed: Bitterbloom Bearer

Bitterbloom Bearer

The most recent sale of Bitterbloom Bearerโ€™s serialized card with $4,100 on TCGplayer in Feburary, which tracks with most of the listed prices. Of note, this card features art by one of Magicโ€™s most iconic artists, Rebecca Guay. Mark Poole, the illustrator of Emeritus of Ideation, has a similar pedigree within the community.

Avatar: the Last Airbender: Avatar Aang

Avatar Aang

While Avatar Aang was never serialized, the legend still boasts headliner prices, with the most recent sale being a whopping $4,499. This is a remarkable step up from Bitterbloom Bearer and can probably be attributed to the popularity of the ATLA franchiseโ€”after all, this was the headliner of the 3rd best selling set.

Edge of Eternities: Sothera, the Supervoid

Sothera, the Supervoid

Sothera, the Supervoid represents a steep drop in price, with the most recent sale being about $1,193. Iโ€™d guess that comes from the lack of prestige compared with previous headliners; ATLA is a massive franchise, and ECL represented a return to one of Magicโ€™s most iconic planes and a similarly iconic artist. This is by no means a knock on Micha Huigen or EOEโ€™s setting, but itโ€™s just not as attention grabbing, and makes it clear that more than card quality impacts the price.

Tarkir: Dragonstorm: Mox Jasper

Serialized Mox Jasper

The last headliner to look at is Mox Jasper from Tarkir: Dragonstorm, with the recent sale price of $1,300. This oneโ€™s a headscratcher, as Dan Frazier is a well-known artist and Tarkir a relatively popular plane people were excited to return to. It could point towards Bitterbloom Bearer going for an excessive amount of money, with the $1-2,000 range being more respectable for an in-universe product.

However you look at it, these numbers make it clear that $20,000 is a ludicrous amount of money for Emeritus of Ideation. If you want to pick on up, look for something on the lower end of the rangeโ€ฆand maybe wait a few weeks or months for the hype to settle.
