Cards that generate mana or Treasure in white are few and far between, and most of them aren’t even creatures, like Smothering Tithe. White has some cards like Land Tax or Archaeomancer's Map that help with ramp as a concession to formats like Commander. But what about the traditional mana dorks?
There aren’t that many white mana dorks. But there are some gems among these few offerings, so let’s take a look at the best white mana dorks and see which ones stand out.
What Are White Mana Dorks in MTG?

Gold Myr | Illustration by Alan Pollack
White mana dorks are creatures that produce mana in some way and are strictly white, considering color identity. White creatures that generate colorless mana are fine by me.
I’m not considering cards like Helionaut that filter colorless mana into white mana, colorless mana dorks like Millikin, or creatures from other colors that produce white mana, like Avacyn's Pilgrim. Also, I’m not considering cost reduction, or cards that fetch plains to your hand or the battlefield.
#7. Sunseed Nurturer
Sunseed Nurturer isn’t your mana dork role model, and it shows how bad white is at generating mana. It’s an almost unplayable 1/1 creature for 3 mana, and it generates colorless mana to boot. White isn’t so desperate for ramp that you should resort to this.
#6. Great Desert Prospector
Great Desert Prospector costs 5 mana, which isn’t an exceptional mana dork. That said, you can create a lot of Powerstone tokens. But it’s terrible on an empty board, and as we know, Powerstone tokens are restrictive in what they can power. It’s an okay card in artifact creature decks.
#5. Codsworth, Handy Helper
Codsworth, Handy Helper is great as an aura or equipment deck mana dork. Being a Palladium Myr of sorts, it generates 2 mana. Auras and equipment are very well supported themes in white or Boros () decks, so ramping into Batterskull or Machinist's Arsenal isn’t out of the question.
#4. Discerning Financier
Discerning Financier is a good catch-up mechanism that gives you a steady stream of Treasure tokens if you’re behind on lands. Chances are that you will have less lands than your opponents if you’re mono-white or rely on artifact ramp and Treasure. This card also lets you sell your Treasure for cards later on.
#3. Tataru Taru
When Tataru Taru enters, you’ll make a tapped Treasure token, which is similar to a regular mana dork with summoning sickness. Considering that white can make other players draw cards with effects like Secret Rendezvous or Loran of the Third Path, this card can generate a bunch of Treasure for you, besides being a good 0/3 defender.
#2. Gold Myr
Gold Myr is the closest thing we have to a classic mana dork in white. Two mana, generate when tapped, no questions asked. It’s best used in decks that have myr synergies, or in affinity decks, to effectively contribute 2 mana at once.
#1. Giada, Font of Hope
Giada, Font of Hope is the best white mana dork and the best reason to build around angels. This 2-drop is perfectly playable as a 2/2 flier, but when you’re ramping and buffing angels, you’re in for a treat. Giada is by far the most popular white commander, with over 20,000+ decklists posted online, and a top 20 commander overall.
Best White Mana Dork Payoffs
The best mana dork payoffs are cards that benefit from getting onto the battlefield a turn earlier. These are usually powerful 4- and 5-mana plays, like Gideon, Ally of Zendikar, Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines, or Smothering Tithe. Cards like Anti-Venom, Horrifying Healer may need an extra push, so you can cast them reliably on turns 4-5.
A mono-white deck rarely cares about the late game without splashing another color, like blue for card draw, or green for ramp. If you’re building around a big white creature like Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite, Zetalpa, Primal Dawn, or Avacyn, Angel of Hope, you need some mana dorks or other ways to ramp and produce more mana overall.
Why Doesn’t White Get Access to as Many Mana Dorks?
Mana dorks and mana production, be it in bursts or at a steady rate, don’t belong to white’s share of the color pie. White extracts its power from its creatures, and it usually works with mechanics like convoke to reduce the cost of spells, or alternate costs, as we can see in cards like Sephara, Sky's Blade and Valiant Changeling. This color also works with equality, so if a player has more lands or is drawing more cards, white can help you catch up, unlike green, which wants to have the upper hand in mana production.
Wrap Up

Codsworth, Handy Helper | Illustration by Alex Konstad
White gets the short end of the stick in the mana dork department. Red used to be this way, but red now gets regular mana dorks, so WotC might create some white mana dorks, even conditional ones. We may see some designs like a creature that taps for white if an opponent controls more lands, for example, or more designs like Codsworth, Handy Helper that support a certain card type.
