Red's kind of on a tear in Magic right now, isn't it? Commander's its own thing as far as color rankings go, but it's pretty evident that red decks stay winning across many of Magic's major 60-card Constructed formats, from hyper-powerful Modern to common-driven Pauper. Maybe it's time to just legalize Blue Elemental Blast in every format.

Standard Red

Red's been the talk of the town in Standard for a while now, ever since the conversation shifted away from Up the Beanstalk towards blisteringly fast decks running Monstrous Rage, Slickshot Show-Off, and Manifold Mouse. Red aggro was already a point of contention before the last few sets released, but it was really Cori-Steel Cutter that drove the archetype to S-tier Standard all-star.

Odds are the Banned & Restricted announcement coming on June 30 takes an axe to Monstrous Rage at a minimum, possibly even Heartfire Hero and/or Cori-Steel Cutter too. Note that the only card currently banned in Standard (specifically in Arena best-of-one Standard) is Leyline of Resonance, a red card. In addition to the Leyline, Monstrous Rage is already banned in Arena's Alchemy format, which is saying a lot given the relatively unfair power level of Alchemy decks.

Red is so dominant, in fact, that some of the best cards to combat the red menace areโ€ฆ red cards! Screaming Nemesis is good no matter how you twist it, but Magebane Lizard has been seeing mainboard play as a hedge against Izzet Prowess specifically. Did you have Magebane Lizard on your Standard bingo card when it came out? No, no you didn't. Honestly, you could just ban basic Mountain from Standard and it'd probably make for a healthier environment.

Modern Red

Modern has a serious energy problem, with Boros Energy being far and away the most represented post-Modern Horizons 3 deck since Underworld Breach got nixed. It took banning a busted red card to put another red deck back to #1.

A lot of Boros Energy's strength comes from broken MH3 white creatures like Ocelot Pride, Guide of Souls, and Ajani, Nacatl Pariah.

But the other half of the deck is equally busted red cards like Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer, Phlage, Titan of Fire's Fury, Galvanic Discharge, and the deceptively broken Arena of Glory.

Domain Zoo is also heavily represented, using a lot of the same Modern Horizons red cards listed above, combined with Fable of the Mirror-Breakers and Territorial Kavus to get off to fast starts. Tribal Flames is hardly problematic but it's a hell of a burn spell in this deck. And Lightning Boltโ€˜s always around as well.

Eldrazi Ramp's a smaller portion of the meta, but everyone knows how silly of a card Writhing Chrysalis is. Ruby Storm is in the equation too, as a basically mono-red deck leaning on the strength of more MH3 cards like Ral, Monsoon Mage and Ruby Medallion. Hmmโ€ฆ maybe Modern Horizons products are an issue, after all!

Pioneer Red

The 18 people still playing Pioneer have basically had to contend with Mono-Red Aggro and Izzet Phoenix decks for what seems like an eternity. The mono-red decks aren't that dissimilar from the Standard versions, which is a testament to how strong that deck is in Standard right now.

But Izzet Phoenix has been the Pioneer deck of choice for years now. It's kind of a blue-forward deck since Arclight Phoenix thrives when combined with blue cantrips and draw spells, but you'll see Fiery Impulses and Lightning Axes pull parts of the deck together.

Questing Druid

โ€œGruul Prowessโ€ also exists, though it's a bit of a misnomer since the only real non-red card it plays is Questing Druid, which the astute among you will note is, in fact, a red card.

Artist's Talent

There's something to be said about Artist's Talent showing up in a lot of these decks too. The persistent rummaging followed by cost reduction helps these decks rattle off spell after spell, and that's before you ever consider the damage amplification from the final level of this class enchantment.

Pauper Red

Pauper's a pretty diverse format, though red's been a bit of a boogeyman there in recent years, as well. Red-Black Burn is a top dog right now, looking to combine a bunch of red burn spells with Alms of the Vein and a Sneaky Snacker recursion engine. Red all-timers like Lightning Bolt and Chain Lightning are both here, but the deck also maximizes discard-friendly red spells like Grab the Prize and Fiery Temper. It's not overly problematic, but it's been a tier-1 deck for a bit now.

There are plenty of other big red players in Pauper too. You've got Writhing Chrysalis, which is a rare masquerading as a lower-rarity card in the format. Makeshift Munitions and Cleansing Wildfire have had a long-term presence in conjunction with indestructible artifact lands. Galvanic Blast is a super-Bolt in this format, and decks built around burn creatures like Kessig Flamebreather and Thermo-Alchemist are quite commonplace, too. Also, Fireblast is a common, for some reason?

Also note how many red cards have had to be banned from Pauper. The list currently includes:

Having Monastery Swiftspear banned in a format should be a clear indication of how out-of-control red can be in that format.

Red in Other Formats

And red's basically never been oppressive in Commander. That's not to say red doesn't have good cards, just that the multiplayer formats tend to soften some of the natural strengths of red, given the higher life totals, slower gameplay, and free-for-all nature of multiplayer Magic. Again, don't be fooled into thinking red's bad though. If you've ever been on the other end of a powered-up Jeska's Will or a well-timed Deflecting Swat, you'll know what red can do. Also, have you seen Etali, Primal Conqueror? What's up with that guy, anyway?

So yeah, red's tearing it up across the board in Magic. Part of that's accelerated Modern Horizons power creep, but there's just so much efficiency packed into all-stars like Fable of the Mirror-Breaker, Cori-Steel Cutter, and other recent prints. Maybe a good Hydroblast reprint would do a lot of good, after all.
