Universes Beyond sets never fail to deliver high quantities of commanders, but The Hobbit hasnโt been shy about the quality, either. Gandalf received plenty of cards in The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth and has had a second coming in the new set. Hereโs how to win with every new Gandalf from The Hobbit in Commander.
#5. Gandalf, Spark Starter
Low-rarity legends often struggle in Commander because theyโre balanced around Limited, which has a much lower power threshold. If Gandalf, Spark Starter cost less than 6, it might warp HOB Limited. But that means it struggles to produce the bombastic displays of might Commander demands.
Letโs focus on retriggering that ability; it can burn your opponents. Red doesnโt have flicker effects outside Conjurer's Closet, but its Twinflame variants get another enters trigger. Damage doublers like Solphim, Mayhem Dominus and Angrath's Marauders further support the plan. Add extra burn from cards like Fanatic of Mogis and Sunspine Lynx, and you have a Commander deck.
#4. Gandalf, Wandering Wizard
I normally write off common commanders but Gandalf, Wandering Wizard has a little sauce because the activated ability can be used multiple times: since shuffling Gandalf into your library is part of the effect, not the cost, and it can be activated at instant speed, you can hold priority and activate it multiple times.
Training Grounds and Heartstone are the only ability reducers in the color but mono-blue makes large sums of mana by increasing what Islands tap for with cards like High Tide and Caged Sun. Should you create infinite mana, you have an outlet in the command zone! Look, itโs a common, itโs weak, but itโs interesting.
#3. Gandalf, Goblinsโ Bane
Gandalf, Goblins' Bane pushes you into storm with its damage trigger. You have the prowess ability, but I wouldnโt lean on it. The adventure also points you towards storm because the card draw sets up your big turn.
Like the previous mono-red Gandalf, youโll want damage amplifiers like Torbran, Thane of Red Fell to accelerate your win. Beyond that, go for the regular storm stuff. Rituals like Seething Song, card draw like Reckless Impulse. If you want to move from manual storm to a higher Bracket brew, Gandalf provides an outlet for Lion's Eye Diamond/Underworld Breach lines.
#2. Gandalf, Shadowโs Foe
Gandalf, Shadow's Foe moves us to the truly scary commanders. 7 mana keeps this from high Bracket play, but landfallโdraw a card is powerful, as is drawing three cards when Gandalf enters.
The easiest way to break it is Amulet of Vigor effects that make lands enter untapped. That rebuys part of Gandalfโs mana cost and even draws your deck with Ghostly Flicker and an Archaeomancer. It also makes cheaper flicker effects like Essence Flux or Displacer Kitten mana positive.
Blueโs land ramp is scant but exists. Retraced Image and Mitotic Manipulation get Islands into play and Dreamscape Artist was practically designed for this deck. But youโll often find extra land drops from cards that bounce your lands, like Deprive and Ensnare. These can easily be dropped back into play with Walking Atlas and PuPu UFO, which are only an Elven Raft-Steerer and Guildless Commons away from infinite combos themselves.
#1. Gandalf, Party Guest
Gandalf, Party Guest comes from The Hobbit Scene Boxes and is tidily the best Gandalf for Commander, counting both HOB and LTR.
Legendary wizards is the necessary starting point and Magic doesnโt lack for them. Veyran, Voice of Duality rewards the spellslinger strategy Gandalf pushes you towards, Kykar, Wind's Fury is another source of mana, and who isnโt familiar with Vivi Ornitier?
Wizard lords and payoffs are sparse but potent when they arrive. Harmonic Prodigy and Wizard's Staff let Gandalf cast two spells, while cards like Flame of Anor and Mana Sculpt become stronger for controlling wizards.
Then you need the instants and sorceries worth casting. Iโm a fan of extra combats since those result in more spells cast from Gandalf, but look for big instants and sorceries too; your opponents can only handle so many cards like Blatant Thievery and Jeskai Revelation. Since youโre casting these spells for free, you have extra mana to copy them with Twincast and friends.
