Companions were arguably a failed experiment: A cool way to utilize the sideboard that ended up being so good the mechanic required a major errata and still needed bans post-nerf. The most infamous companion, without doubt, is Lurrus of the Dream-Den. It's a recursive powerhouse whose companion restriction rarely hurt decks in Eternal formats where efficiency already trumped everything else. But itโ€™s just as playable in EDH with the right 2-mana commander.

#5. Elas il-Kor, Sadistic Pilgrim

Elas il-Kor, Sadistic Pilgrim

Elas il-Kor, Sadistic Pilgrim and Lurrus get along handsomely because Elasโ€™s aristocratic tendencies inevitably sends creatures to the graveyard, and Lurrus recasts them.

That might be as simple as recurring creatures with solid death triggers, like Doomed Traveler or Greedy Freebooter, or constructing a value engine by recurring cards like Accursed Marauder and Remorseful Cleric.

#4. Bjorna, Nightfall Alchemist + Wernog, Riderโ€™s Chaplain

In Magic parlance, more colors = more good is often true because you have access to so many additional tools, which makes the friends forever pair of Bjorna, Nightfall Alchemist and Wernog, Rider's Chaplain appealing.

Much like Elas, Lurrus recurs sacrifice fodder like Cryogen Relic or Ichor Wellspring, but its utility grows in step with the available card pool. Mystic Remora can be recast each turn for , neutering cumulative upkeep. And Lurrusโ€™s restriction doesnโ€™t prevent combo lines. Everything Underworld Breach needs is legal, and Lurrus even recurs the Breach if you get Silenced mid-combo.

#3. Lotho, Corrupt Shirriff

Lotho, Corrupt Shirriff

Lotho, Corrupt Shirriff is a personal favorite card to pair with Lurrus, and the best commander here for Brawl. Lotho and Lurrus combine to provide ramp and card advantage every game, which is an invaluable combination.

Importantly, that command zone wonโ€™t win the game. Lotho makes lots of Treasure, Lurrus offers lots of card draw, but you still need more. I recommend combos, with cards like Leonin Relic-Warder + Animate Dead or Vizier of Remedies and a persist creature making easy work of your opponents with Orzhovโ€™s () many Blood Artist variants. Since the curve is often so low, you can even run Ad Nauseam as long as you donโ€™t go crazy with non-creature spells like Breach the Multiverse.

#2. Ezio Auditore da Firenze

Ezio Auditore da Firenze is one of two five-color commanders that can companion Lurrus, with its competitor being Jenson Carthalion, Druid Exile. I prefer Ezio because itโ€™s more likely to do something; Jenson rarely makes Angels with the cost restrictions but Ezio could be an alternative win condition. However, the reality is that neither commander really matters; you donโ€™t go five-color Lurrus to play Ezio.

Ezio (or Jenson) are for cEDH Lurrus, where you want the most colors to do the most busted things. Thassa's Oracle + Demonic Consultation gets under the companion requirement, plus Lurrus opens new lines. Underworld Breach combos become easier to pull off when you can crack Lion's Eye Diamond with Breach in hand or recur Breach for a second win attempt. Intuition piles change when you can recast whatever get binned, and Cephalid Illusionist becomes a draw spell.

#1. Hashaton, Scarabโ€™s Fist

Hashaton, Scarab's Fist

If you arenโ€™t aiming for Bracket 5 cEDH decks, which most players arenโ€™t, Hashaton, Scarab's Fist is comfortably the best Lurrus commander. Part of it is access to blueโ€”that Mystic Remora synergy is so goodโ€”but part of it is how Hashaton surpasses Lurrusโ€™s restriction.

Because Lurrus forces you to play small creatures, winning the game requires extra effort since a 2/2 canโ€™t effectively peck away 40 life. But since Hashaton makes 4/4 copies of weenies like The Queen of Dale or Faerie Mastermind, those creatures exert enough pressure to be threatening. For that reason, I appreciate Hashaton as a hatebears commander with cards like Thalia, Guardian of Thraben.

Another plus to the Hashaton and Lurrus relationship is that Hashaton doesnโ€™t exile the creatures it copies, so you can discard Faerie Mastermind, then replay it from your graveyard with Lurrus for twice the impact.
