Lorwyn Eclipsed (ECL) prerelease looks like an exciting event, if only because it’s been so long since the last proper, in-universe Magic set. Not only is it a Multiverse set, but it’s also a return to one of the most iconic planes in the game!
If you’ve stepped away from Magic for a while or are just starting out and need the details behind the ECL prerelease, I have you covered!
What Is the Lorwyn Eclipsed Prerelease?

The Lorwyn Eclipse prerelease is a casual tournament held at Local Game Stores (LGS) to celebrate the release of ECL by letting players play with the new set ahead of its official release. Prerelease is more community-driven than competitive, with a focus on celebrating Magic and your community over bringing the hottest tech to excel at the tournament.
What Format Is Prerelease?
Prerelease is Sealed, a Limited variant where players open six booster packs and make a 40-card deck from the cards they open. The LGS provides basic lands, so you just need your playables from boosters.
What Comes in a Prerelease Kit?
The ECL Prerelease Kit contains six Play Boosters, from which you’ll build your deck, a date-stamped foil rare or mythic, which you can include in your deck, and a spindown die to count your life total, with the 20 replaced with the ECL set symbol. The box the kit comes in works as a deck box to store your cards.
When Is Prerelease Week?
Prerelease week is the third week of January. Stores can schedule prerelease events from January 16-22, ahead of the official release on January 23. Note that just because stores can schedule events through the week doesn’t mean they will; check with your LGS for the most accurate information.
You can expect most stores to hold events on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (Jan 16-18).
Where Is the Prerelease?
The Prerelease is held at your LGS, or local game store. These are card shops affiliated with Wizards of the Coat through the Wizards Play Network (WPN). They’ll receive Prerelease Kits and hold the event in-house. If you want to find your LGS, put your information into Wizard’s Store & Event Locator.
If an LGS doesn’t work for your prerelease needs, Wizards also offers an At-Home Prerelease, which essentially just means LGSs can sell you a Prerelease Kit to take home and play with. It’s useful if you can’t make it to the event but still want to play with friends.
Who Goes to Prerelease?
Prerelease is one of the most casual, open-ended Magic events. It’s perfect for anybody, from the most invested player to the newest fan. Prereleases in general are great for everybody to come and chill with the new set. ECL prerelease is particularly good for fans of typal strategies, as Lorwyn is famously a typal plane that supports merfolk, faeries, elves, goblins, and more. Even if you’ve never played Limited, it’s a great entry point.
Is Going to Prerelease Worth It?
Prerelease generally costs $35-50 dollars for your kit and entry into the tournament, and prizes are often a pack for each win. Since ECL is an in-universe set, it probably sits on the lower end of the scale since Universes Beyond sets are more expensive. Prerelease lasts for a couple hours; you generally get 50 minutes for deckbuilding, then three 50-minute Swiss rounds. Factoring in matches that go over time and the general challenges of handling large groups of people, you can comfortably round that up to four hours of tournament time.
From a strictly monetary perspective, you probably won’t make your money back on the cards you open. The value lies in the actual gameplay and interacting with the community. If you don’t enjoy the gameplay aspect, it would be more worthwhile to purchase a couple packs to crack or wait a few days to pick up singles. If you want the experience, it’s hard to beat; prereleases attracts a wide enough crowd to feel unlike other Magic events.
