Edge of Eternities, the space-faring MTG set that globally made planetfall last week, and it's all charged up and ready to go. Magic's Head Designer Mark Rosewater has confirmed EOE is doing pretty well and, while it won't break Final Fantasyโ€˜s best-selling record, it's in very high demand.

And as it's usually the case in Magic, success brings price spikesโ€ฆ not just for Edge of Eternitiesโ€˜ own product, but also for long-forgotten bulk-bin cards that all of a sudden find it's their time to shine.

Today it's Charge Stationโ€˜s turn โ€“ a colorless artifact that, judging it just by its name, could have perfectly been reprinted either in EOE's main set or any of the two Edge of Eternities Commander precons. And which is all about one of those precon's main themes: Charge counters.

Energy Chamber is a very old colorless card from Fifth Dawn, that basically provides a sunburst effect during your upkeep. If you've never heard of this artifact, that's because it was quickly dumped into the bulk bins of history: It never saw competitive play in any Magic format, and in casual EDH it's only played with low-bracket commanders like Omarthis, Ghostfire Initiate.

As such, Energy Chamberโ€˜s price has been a flat fifty cents for years. But it started to slowly move upwards by the end of June, reached $0.99 by the end of July, and now rockets by 388% to nearly $4 for mint copies in US markets:

Players who like following financial news in the MTG card market may recognize those two dates: Late June is when the EOE reveals started, which in turn increased the demand for cards like Power Conduit that have synergy with charge counters.

Once the full deck list for the EOE EDH Precons were revealed โ€“ which, for financial speculators, means there's a lot less risks of a reprint โ€“ it became obvious that the Counter Intelligence precon was going to feature charge counters pretty heavily.

As a result, many other charge-counter-matters cards, like Filigree Vector soon went up in price in the second half of July.

Players took a while to take an interest in Charge Station, though, and it hardly moved in price back then. Yet as it often happens when new commanders get traction, interest in synergistic cards grows slowly at first, then suddenly: Now nearly a third of Inspirit, Flagship Vessel decks pack a Charge Station copy.

Another factor for Charge Stationโ€˜s price spike is that it's in relatively low supply if you want near-mint copies.

Although it's an uncommon, it's a sort of โ€œrare uncommonโ€: It comes from a very old Magic set, and because it was never valuable (until nowโ€ฆ) a good chunk of players never took too much care in preserving it in mint condition. It's easy to find heavily or moderately played copies nowadays, and those haven't moved past $0.50 โ€“ but lightly played copies are trading around $2.50 and $3.50, and the relatively scarce near-mint copies are listed above $4 at the time of writing.

With our usual caveat that this is not investment advice (doing your own research is always the way to go, folks!), demand for cards that have charge counters synergy has kept up since the EOE reveals.

Power Conduit, who led the charge back in mid-June (and, like Charge Station, is an uncommon from a very old Magic set) went up from about $3.50 to around $10, and never went downโ€ฆ

โ€ฆ while Filigree Vector, which is the poster construct of cards that spiked after the precon's full reveals in July, went from $5 to more than $20 and is still climbing:

No hype lasts forever, that's for sure (well, unless you're Y'shtola, Night's Blessedโ€ฆ but being a Final Fantasy commander is kinda cheating by this point!). But between Mark Rosewater's confirmation that EOE is beating WotC's expectations, and other charge-counter-matters cards never losing steam after their spikes, it does seem like the Counter Intelligence precon managed to make charge counter decks a thing.
