The full deck list for Counter Intelligence, one of Edge of Eternities Commander precons, was officially unveiled yesterday. It was pretty obvious that a precon called Counter Intelligence was going to feature counters pretty heavily, and the box clearly showed that proliferate and artifacts were another themeโ€ฆ

โ€ฆ but yesterday's twist was that Counter Intelligence would heavily feature a specific type of existing counter: Charge counters.

And just like Wednesday's reveal of the other Edge of Eternities Commander Precon, World Shaper sent the price of Insect and Lands Matter cards to the stratosphere, now Counter Intelligence is doing the same with Magic cards handling charge counters, with some of them going up by 200% or more.

Charge counters are pretty old, with the first MTG cards with charge counters hailing back from Legends. There are more than a hundred cards that deal with charge counters (and Edge of Eternities will add several more), but up until now there was not much synergy between charge counters cards. That's about to change: Charge counters are heavily featured in Edge of Eternities in general, and are a core part of the Spacecrafts and the new station mechanic.

โ€œEach Spacecraft starts out as an artifact, but most can become artifact creatures with the help of some intrepid explorers,โ€ explains WotC's Matt Tabak in the official Edge of Eternities Mechanics article. โ€œTo do that, you'll need the new station ability.โ€

To activate the station ability, you need to tap a creature you control, and then you put a number of charge counters equal to the creature's power on the Spacecraft. โ€œOnce the Spacecraft has a number of charge counters on it equal to or greater than the number indicated in the circle on the left side of its text box,โ€ explains Matt, โ€œit becomes a creature with the power and toughness indicated on the right side. It also has any abilities found in the lower striation of the text box.โ€

The first example of the station ability we saw was The Seriema, revealed weeks ago:

The Seriema

That single card was enough to start moving Power Conduit up since early June, and it never stopped: From around $3 a month ago, it has rallied more than 300% and near-mint copies are now traded at around $9-$10:

The synergy here is obvious: Spacecraft care about charge counters, which you get by tapping creatures. Power Conduit can turn other counters either into charge counters directly, or buff your creature by +1/+1 which will also contribute to station when you tap it (since station cares about power!)

Speculating after seeing a single card from an upcoming set is a bit of a risky business, though, since the card you are betting on could be reprinted and its price tank โ€“ and that's something that could still happen with Power Conduit (or any card in this article!) since Edge of Eternities is not fully revealed yet.

For example, a couple of weeks ago we covered Tekuthal, Inquiry Dominus' spike, which went up for the similar reason than Power Conduitโ€ฆ But with Counter Intelligence Commander precon now fully revealed, and including a Tekuthal reprint, this blue creature will very likely tank in price.

On the other hand, several โ€œcharge counters matterโ€ cards that will not be reprinted are seeing a lot of demand. And chief among all is Filigree Vector.

Charge Counter Cards Shoot to the Stars

What Power Conduit did in a month, Filigree Vector did in a single day: Rocketing from about $5.50 just yesterday to well over $18, it jumped by more than 300% overnight:

The synergy with station and charge-matters counters is also clear as day here: You either get the charges directly, or can buff your creatures which in turn can station your spacecraft better.

There's huge increased demand in other charge counter cards: up until last week, Aetheric Amplifier traded around 5-10 copies per day, on average. Yesterday it traded close to 500 copies in a single day, and the remaining inventory is just around 350 copies. While Aetheric Amplifier price only increased by 50% (and still hasn't reached its recent peak from mid-May), this huge demand will very likely keep pushing the price upwards.

Aetheric Amplifier comes from a very recent set, Aethedrift Commander, so it's bound to be in relatively high supply. But on the other hand the risk for a reprint seems minimal in this case.

Something similar happens when you look at Magistrateโ€™s Scepter, or a tap/untap-matters card like Clock of Omens: Moderate gains in price at the time of writing, but huge increased demand.ย

What Will Happen with the Price of Charge Counter Cards?

With our usual caveat that this is not investment advice (always do your own research!), it's very obvious by now that Edge of Eternities in general, and the Counter Intelligence Commander precon in particular, care a lot about charge counters. A single Edge of Eternities card revealed weeks ago, The Seriema, was enough to start Power Conduitโ€˜s month-long rally; now that reveal is in full season (and after a megaton of unofficial leaksโ€ฆ), charge counters are in overdriven.

If any of these cards get reprinted, their price will definitely tank. Aetheric Amplifier is probably safe, since it's very new. Filigree Vector is arguably safe-ish, since it seems very unlikely that we'll see a Phyrexian in the main set (although Tekuthal is in the preconโ€ฆ and we already have Slivers, Lhurgoyf, and Eldrazi, so who knows!). But Power Conduit sounds exactly like the name of a card you'd want in a sci-fi, spacecraft-heavy set that cares about charge counters, so I wouldn't be surprised to see a reprint next week.

One thing seems certain, though: Chaaarge!!

What about the overlooked Energy Chamber from 5th Dawn?

Good shout, should be a hit since it wasn’t reprinted in the precon.
