Edge of Eternities, the upcoming space-theme Magic set, will likely include one of the rarest cycles of MTG cards: a mythic rare land cycle.

We're still three Standard sets away from Edge of Eternities โ€“ which releases on August 1st this year โ€“ but accessory manufacturers are already providing product information to distributors and resellers. Among those, Ultra Pro will release several playmats with Edge of Eternities art โ€“ with five of those playmats having art from a mythic land (one for each color), plus a sixth described as โ€œMythic Land Other,โ€ as seen in PHD's website.

As reported by u/Copernicus1981, who broke the news on Reddit, a couple of other sites have posted the same information (even when it is currently unavailable on Ultra Pro's website), which pretty much confirm that EOE will have one of the rarest card cycles in Magic.

Very Rare Mythics

Battles would be the MTG card type with the least mythics (just five), and lands would be a close second, with less than twenty mythic lands printed thus far in all of Magic's history.

If you're thinking (like yours truly until recently), โ€œWait, that can't be rightโ€ฆ surely it has to be closer to a hundred!?โ€, then you're not technically wrong: There are indeed 124 MTG lands with the mythic rarity symbol slapped onto them. But that's because more than 100 of those are rarity-shifted reprints. That's to say, lands like the Arid Mesa fetch land that was originally printed as a rare in Zendikar, and later reprinted as a mythic rare in the Zendikar Expeditions bonus sheet.

Brand-new, non-reprints mythic lands are a much rarer breed: only 19 of them printed to date.

Mythic land cycles are of course even rarer, with only two in existence: Zendikar Risingโ€˜s MDFC bolt landsโ€ฆ

โ€ฆ and the โ€œdeepestโ€ gods from The Lost Caverns of Ixalan.

Brand-New Mythic Lands?

If EOE introduces Magic's third mythic land cycle ever, that would be pretty big news all by itself. But could be even bigger if, as you've probably noticed from the existing two cycles above, this third cycle is about MDFC lands.

As Andy often notes in card ranking and EDH deck guides, MDFC lands are always nice, and the Modern Horizons 3 batch we got last year is truly great. Of course, the power level of a Standard set should be no match for a Modern product, but as the mythic land cycle from The Lost Caverns of Ixalan shows even Standard sets can pack a punch.

Zendikar Expeditionsโ€ฆ In Space!

Another possibility is that the Edge of Eternities' mythic land cycle joins the club of rarity-shifted cards, like WotC did with the fetch lands when they reprinted them in Zendikar Expeditions.

So we could launch the Mirrodin artifact lands into space, which would be kinda fitting since they are artifacts after all. Or maybe the Throne of Eldraine Castles (โ€ฆ in space!!), or the Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty Channel Lands (โ€ฆ alright, alright, I'll stop!).

In case you were wondering, there's nearly 250 cards when you look at original, mono-color land cycles (of all rarities), so there's certainly a lot to borrow from.

One long-shot possibility is that Edge of Eternities brings in-universe, rarity-shifted reprints of Universes Beyond cards.

Magic's Head Designer Mark Rosewater has very clearly stated that WotC can reprint UB cards with new artwork, provided they don't reference specific intellectual property elements (that's to say, as long as they rename terms that are unique to an IP, like Warhammer 40Kโ€˜s โ€œAstartesโ€).

And there happens to be a UB-only, mono-color land cycle: the legends-matter rare lands from The Lord of the Rings.

WotC cannot reprint them with the same name even if they furnish it with brand-new, โ€œIn Space!โ€ art, so โ€œRivendellโ€ is out of the question. But although it would be a very long shot, I think that something like Stellarhaven, Elenvale Station, or Celestirion is not entirely impossible.

However WotC approaches it, and even though we may need to wait a few more months to find out the specifics, it seems pretty clear that new mythic planets lands are coming!

Interesting! So really only ZNR mythic lands are a “proper” land cycle that you can actually play as lands when you want to.

Yup, I think those are the only ones so far!
