Magic has a storied history with supplementary products. Some are complete hits (Commander Collections), and others are huge misses (From the Vault: Annihilation). In a world full of Secret Lairs and Commander precons cornering the market, it’s easy to forget that Magic even had yearly releases like this.

Today we’re going to chat about a product that seems to be lost in the ether somewhere. The Commander Collections were a great idea, repurposing previous products into something directly aimed at Commander players, who, let’s be real, were the people buying things like From the Vaults anyway. It’s looking like the remaining Commander Collections have been abandoned, but let’s take a peek at what we know.

What Is Commander Collection: Blue?

Short answer: It doesn’t exist.

Back in 2020 WotC released a supplementary product named Commander Collection: Green, indicating the start of a new product line-up geared directly towards Commander players and their collections. Sure enough, Commander Collection: Black followed about a year later, which got players speculating what the next color in line would be. But then… silence. There’s been no talk about furthering the product line, and it’s been a few years since the last entry.

The Commander Collections are an off-shoot of the Planeswalker Spellbook products, which had a very similar make-up but centered around a specific planeswalker character. They themselves were a rebranding of the long-running From the Vault series, which was the typical yearly collector’s item for quite some time.

What’s the Purpose of Commander Collections?

To take your money, of course!

But also, Commander Collections are (were?) intended to put a selection of Commander staples into the hands of players, but unlike a Masters set or normal set release, the product was a hand-curated selection of cards. In other words, pay a lump sum of cash, get a grip of shiny cards for your Commander decks.

They were advertised as yearly releases, with each year offering a new Commander Collection for a specific color. Only two of those Collections have hit the shelves, with no news about any further entries in the series.

List of Commander Collections

The following are the only two Commander Collections currently available, and the cards included in each one:

Commander Collection: Green

  • Sol Ring
  • Command Tower
  • Freyalise, Llanowar’s Fury
  • Omnath, Locus of Mana
  • Bane of Progress
  • Seedborn Muse
  • Sylvan Library
  • Worldly Tutor

Commander Collection: Black

  • Sol Ring
  • Command Tower
  • Liliana, Heretical Healer / Liliana, Defiant Necromancer
  • Ghoulcaller Gisa
  • Ophiomancer
  • Phyrexian Arena
  • Reanimate
  • Toxic Deluge
  • Snake / Zombie double-sided Token

These products are spiritual successors to the Signature Spellbook lineup, which included three individual entries, each themed after a popular planeswalker and each containing eight cards playable in a Commander deck of that planeswalker’s colors. You’ll notice the Spellbooks cover , , and , whereas the Commander Collections include and , so it’s completely possible that WotC considers them a package that covers all five colors and sees no need to continue the Commander Collection line-up. The Signature Spellbooks include:

  • Signature Spellbook: Jace
  • Signature Spellbook: Gideon
  • Signature Spellbook: Chandra

When Was the Last Commander Collection?

Commander Collection: Black was released in January 2022. Not promising news for anyone eagerly awaiting the next color.

The previous entry, Commander Collection: Green, was released in December 2020, so about a year apart from the other.

Are Commander Collections a Limited Print Run?

There’s not a lot of information about Commander Collections being a limited print run product or “print to demand,” but the print run for both products is over. You can still find the collections through online retailers, but don’t expect your LGS to suddenly restock these.

Where Can You Buy Old Commander Collections?

It’s very possible that your LGS still has green/black Commander Collections in stock, but if not, you can purchase them from most of your usual online retailers. Note that there’s a normal version of each one, and a more expensive “premium” version containing all foils. Check out the following retailers for some options:

What Would Commander Collection: Blue Look Like?

Using the other two Commander Collections as a baseline, here’s a stab at what I’d expect Commander Collection: Blue to look like. Not what I’d want it to be, just what I think it would be:

Sorry for the bait-and-switch, but the sad news is that Commander Collection: Blue doesn’t exist, and from the looks of it, never will. It’ll likely remain in limbo with the red and white collections, though again, you might look at this as a complete set if you lump them in with the Signature Spellbooks.

It would seem that Secret Lairs have absolutely dominated the supplementary product offerings for Magic, at least as far as non-booster related products are concerned. As long as Secret Lairs and Commander precons continue to sell the way they do (trust me, they’re doing well), it’s unlikely we’ll see anything like Commander Collections for the foreseeable future.

But how’s that make you feel? Were you waiting for the next Commander Collection, and if so, what color did you have your heart set on? What do you think Commander Collection: Blue would contain? Let me know in the comments below or over in the Draftsim Discord.
