Hello planeswalkers! I’ve been told many times to “get a life.” Well, I’m not satisfied with just one: I want double the life. What does this mean? I’m not quite sure. But I’m sure there are a few MTG cards that double your life total.

Lifegain is a crucial strategy for MTG players. Gaining life helps stave off the onslaught from aggro and midrange decks. Lifelink and life drain effects are the go-tos for lifegain strategies, but why not skip the incremental gains and go for double the life total? It’s not a common occurrence, but let’s check out the all the life total doublers and how you may be able to use them.

What Are Life Total Doubling Cards in MTG?

In my research, I found only four cards that fit our definition of a life total doubling card, which is a card with some text that reads, “double (your/target player’s) life total”.

There are many cards that give you twice as much or additional life when you gain it. There are also cards that change your life total to become a certain number, possibly related to the board state, but those are mathematically different even if they arrive at similar results. We'll skip any sort of ranking on those today.

Numerically, you may be able to double your life (5 to 10) with some sort of lifegain ability, but the cards below will double any life total.

#4. Enduring Angel / Angelic Enforcer

Enduring AngelAngelic Enforcer

Enduring Angel didn't make it into many decks during it's time in Standard because of the inherent risk. Angelic Enforcer is quite a cool flying angel that doubles your life total and grows proportionally when it attacks, on top of providing you with hexproof. The risk comes from the fact that your life total has to go below 0 to transform Enduring Angel into the killer creature.

This white creature doesn’t quite fit into the curves of midrange angel decks and brings too narrow of a strategy for my taste.

#3. Celestial Mantle

Celestial Mantle

Celestial Mantle is a cool aura that can double your life total multiple times. This white enchantment makes sure your life total never gets close to 0. The high mana value and ease of removal are the ultimate downsides of this card – your opponent can remove the enchanted creature or destroy the enchantment itself. You don’t want to spend 6 mana for your enchanted creature to be hit by a Go for the Throat. Celestial Mantle is legal on many Arena formats, so why not try to repeatedly double your life total with some interesting interactions.?

#2. Revival / Revenge

Revival / Revenge

The split card Revival / Revenge comes to us from the Orzhov Syndicate () in the Ravnica Allegiance Magic set. Both sides of this card are great!

With Revival you can return a creature from the graveyard to the battlefield for cheap and flexible mana. This is wonderful, but let’s check out the lifegain. Revenge is a 6-mana sorcery that doubles your life total and halves target opponent’s. This is the kind of effect that can give you some breathing room from aggro assaults or be a wincon when paired with damage doublers like Bloodletter of Aclazotz. The main downside is if both your totals are low, like say you're both at five. Is gain 5 life and your opponent loses 2 life worth the cost?

#1. Beacon of Immortality

Beacon of Immortality

Let’s go all the way back to 2004 and the set Fifth Dawn. Beacon of Immortality is part of the rare beacon cycle of powerful instants that get shuffled back into your deck upon resolution. At instant speed, you can double your life and possibly get this white instant again once it’s shuffled into your deck. The instant speed is what I believe makes this the most important life total doubler. Similar to fog effects, if you can “trick” your opponent into overextending, you may steal a win.

Best Life Total Doubling Payoffs

The main benefit of doubling your life total is quite straightforward: not dying! Gaining a large amount of life in one interaction can stall many aggro strategies in their tracks. Outside of ensuring you have plenty of life, there are a few interesting interactions that can come from doubling your life total.

With a few combinations, you may be able to put your life total completely out of reach for most strategies. An example of this could be having a card like Boon Reflection and then doubling your life total will increase your life threefold.

Using several cards like Vito, Thorn of the Dusk Rose, Vizkopa Guildmage, or Sanguine Bond can turn your huge lifegain into huge life loss for your opponents. Sanguine Bond combos turn lifegain into wins, often with infinite pings, but huge chunks of life work too.

Let’s not forget some of the life total wincons that doubling your life can help you reach. Cards like Angel of Destiny, Felidar Sovereign, and Test of Endurance all benefit from life total doublers.

Does Doubling Your Life Total Count as Gaining Life?

Yes, when you double your life total you gain life equal to your initial life total.

Double Life Total vs. Double Starting Life Total

The four cards ranked above double whatever your life total is when they resolve. This is regardless of your starting life total and only depends on what your life total is at that moment.

This isn’t to be confused with cards that mention your starting life total. Cards like Exquisite Archangel and Oketra's Last Mercy can be last-ditch saviors and pair well with lifegain payoffs. They’re some great cards, they’re just not what we included today.

I hope that this small look into a specific phrase in MTG gave you the little push you need to win some more games. Lifegain has been a popular and effective strategy for as long as I can remember. So, you can gain life incrementally or double it all at once with a card like Beacon of Immortality.
