With the Reality Fracture release behind us and full information of the set, it's time to scour the cards for potential Commander staples. The set has some hot tech, and these are the ten cards I expect to see long-term play in Magic's most popular format.
A side note: Though many of these are legendary, I'm considering them as part of the 99, not the best commanders, which I've already written about:
Craterclaw Colossus
Starting off strong, Craterclaw Colossus is poised to be an artifact support staple. The need for artifacts, not just creatures, makes it harder to use that the original template but red's good enough at churning out random artifact tokens (especially Treasure) that this should see lots of play.
Flickering Hound
It turns out that Displacer Kitten lite is still nasty. Flickering Hound lacks the original's range but does more than enough to consider for your flicker deck. I love that it uses creatures as its trigger condition; I've had more than a few flicker decks with the Kitten that stall out because it's hard to balance creatures worth flickering with noncreature spells. This is one of the more kill on sight cards from the set.
Garruk, Curse Breaker
Garruk's Uprising has been one of green's best draw spells in Commander for a while. Garruk, Curse Breaker doesn't usurp it at 5 mana, but I'm excited for this green planeswalker. It's a redundant version of the effect that triggers itself plus it untaps lands. I'm always a little interested when a card produces mana and card advantage.
Geist of Saint Thalia
Geist of Saint Thalia is basically three cards rolled into one: Etherium Sculptor, Baral, chief of Compliance, and Inquisitive Glimmer, and it also cost reduces planeswalkers. It's such a broad and powerful ramp card that I can't imagine it not seeing play.
Liliana Echoed Pair
Okay, this entry's cheating but I couldn't pick one. Liliana the Faultless is an on-rate Soul Sister with a powerful protection ability and a discard outlet for graveyard nonsense. Liliana the Repentant works overtime in graveyard decks as a self-mill enabler with an exhaust ability to use the milled cards. While their niches differ, I expect both to see wide play in their appropriate archetypes.
Overwrite the Multiverse
Every set has board wipes but few hit like Overwrite the Multiverse. It starts strong by exiling all creatures, so the only relevant protection spells have phasing, and it inhibits graveyard strategies. Empowering Jace X elevates it further; board wipes are already a form of card advantage, so tacking on card draw, no matter how slow, put your opponents in a terrible spot. This basically always cantrips and often draws two or more cards.
Pia, Aether Ascetic
Pia, Aether Ascetic is probably my favorite card from Reality Fracture because it has so many little synergies. Baseline, a 2/2 that replaces a random card with an ideal enchantment does good work, but Pia is much more than a random tutor. It finds and sets up Tortured Existence, feeds Birthing Ritual and Chthonian Nightmareโฆthe list of Pia synergies goes on.
Samut, Tyrant of Naktamun
Samut, Tyrant of Naktamun has especially caught the cEDH community's eye but I expect it to flourish in casual Commander as well. Giving instants and sorceries split second is similar to uncounterable but a hair stronger because your opponent can't Mindbreak Trap or Reprieve spells on the stack. It also means you can't Fork your spells, but I'm cool with giving that up to win every counter war I participate in.
The Theorist, Jace Beleren
The Theorist, Jace Beleren rounds out the list as a planeswalker explicitly designed for Commander, with a static ability and bounce effect that scale with the number of players in the game. Think of this as a card advantage engine you need to protect with blockers or removal. It only takes a turn cycle or two for it to become a serious problem.
