Huge Universes Beyond Announcement Teased for New York Comic Con

New York Comic Con has begun announcing events and panels, and one of them is dedicated to Magic: the Gathering. This panel on October 9 promises to discuss “a universe beyond our own,” with a “save-the-multiverse” notice:

This is almost certainly an announcement for a Universes Beyond product given the subtle hint in the copy and Wizard's previous statement on 2027's UB announcements; when they revealed the three in-Universe sets at MagicCon Amsterdam, they promised to reveal Universes Beyond products at separate, more appropriate events.

What Set Could Be Announced?

Given that this is Comic Con, in New York, no less, a Marvel set seems most natural. New York Comic Con supports more than comics, of course, but it seems to be the most natural fit for the setting. We'll likely get Magic sets at least until the Infinity Stones are completed (we currently have two of six), so we can expect to them for some time.

As for a more specific picture of what this Marvel property could be, an X-Man focused set seems likely. Marvel Super Heroes has a glaring lack of X-Men. It’s not like there weren’t any, with characters like Storm and Wolverine getting multiple cards and even more obscure characters like X-23 appearing, but there were just as many exclusions—no Professor X, no Cyclops, etc. That said, the sprinkling of mutant payoffs on cards like Wolverine, Claws Out and Black Tom Cassidy feel like Easter eggs pointing to a future X-Men focused set.

The only real hang up I find is that mention of a “save-the-multiverse” theme; I don’t typically associate the X-Men with multiversal stuff but that could be more about my lack of knowledge. That said, an X-Men set seems the most likely, and it's one of Draftsim's top predictions for 2027 (we were already right about Ikoria!)

What Would An X-Men Set Look Like?

The best part of looking into the future is speculating on what we could see and getting things terribly wrong. Well, let me at least fire off what I think is close to a shoe-in for an X-Man set: A 4 or 5 color Charles Xavier whose abilities include, at the very least, playing mutants off the top of your library. Many Universes Beyond sets have a multicolor commander with simple support for the main characters so you can play them in one deck—think Heroes in a Half Shell, Cosmic Spider-Man, Ezio Auditore da Firenze. This feels practically perfect: Generic card advantage with decent flavor since Charles uses his telepathy to find mutants.

And you can’t discuss Charles without considering Eric. Magneto must appear, and likely on multiple cards (realistically, any named characters with more than two appearances will get multiple cards). I’m betting on a Grixis Magneto that steals artifacts from opponents, and maybe sacrifices them to deal damage.

Looking past the characters, I wouldn’t be surprised to see cards styled after the Tarkir sieges. These are enchantments that ask you to chose between one of two competing factions, as seen on cards like Windcrag Siege, Glacierwood Siege, and Frontier Siege. I can very easily envision a few of these enchantments asking you to choose between the Brotherhood of Mutants or the X-Men.

Another given is more mutant support. While I imagine all five colors will get at least a little reward, the X-Men printed in MSH suggests Wizards may keep the focus on green. That would play well with other UB sets like Fallout and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, allowing Wizards to build solid cross-set support for a relatively unexplored design space.

From here, it’s really open to speculation as multiple characters will get multiple cards—I wouldn’t be surprised if any idea you dream up appears to some degree or another. Personally? I’m hoping for a blue Charles Xavier card that lets me look at the top of my opponents’ libraries as a Lantern Control commander.
