The Endstone (Edge of Eternities) - art by Ryan Pancoast

A New York Comic Con panel announced 2027โ€™s first Universes Beyond set: Marvel: Darkhold Destiny, and they also announced the headliner for the set: A cosmic foil edition of The Time Stone, maintaining the pattern of one Infinity Stone per Marvel crossover. While the card text remains a mystery, we got a peek of art:

Given that this art depicts hands cradling the Stone rather than setting it against a cosmic backdrop, this is clearly the art for the base printing, not the cosmic headliner. Still, itโ€™s a beautiful piece from Volkan Baga.

What Could The Time Stone Do?

Given that this is an Infinity Stone, we can safely assume itโ€™s a 2-mana mana rock that taps for one mana of its color, has indestructible, and has a harness ability, which is the part thatโ€™s fun to think about.

Speculating on The Time Stoneโ€™s harness ability starts with guessing its color, which could be either blue or green. Based on the name and abilities of the Time Stone from Marvel lore, blue is the obvious answer. Temporal magic is entirely blueโ€™s domain. But a Stoneโ€™s lore doesnโ€™t always line up with its Magic interpretationโ€”The Mind Stone also has a very blue-coded name and its comic counterpart grants abilities like telepathy, another blue art. But The Mind Stone is a white flicker card. The big argument for it being green is the art. And itโ€™s not just the green stone. The framing of the hands with flora, flourishing on one side, dying the other depicts the cycle of life, such a fundamentally green concept I canโ€™t picture this art with a blue border. Given that art, and the precedent The Mind Stone sets for not adapting the Stones 1-to-1 with the color pie, Iโ€™m leaning towards green.

If The Time Stone does end up blue, I could see it going one of two ways. The first is an extra turn at the end of turns that werenโ€™t yours, like on Lighthouse Chronologist. Or, perhaps more reasonably, an extra turn at the end of any turn that was yours but wasnโ€™t an extra turn, similar to the restriction on Medomai the Ageless. The second possibility would be extra beginning phases, like Sphinx of the Second Sun. Both abilities play off manipulating time, but Iโ€™m uncertain which seems more likely. Extra turns would make this the strongest Infinity Stone by such a huge margin it seems unlikely. But an extra beginning phase may be too understated for the card.

If it ends up being green, I feel much more confidant in guessing it will untap your permanents or lands. Think Seedborn Muse or Wilderness Reclamation. Reclamation in particular feels like the perfect power level: Untapping lands once is strong but not game-warping. Untapping lands also excusably plays with the concept of time, like returning your lands to the time they were full of mana. Though, with The Mind Stone having no mechanical attachment to how the mind is depicted in Magic, the name can be interpreted loosely.
