Shark Shredder, Killer Clone | Illustration by Nicholas Gregory
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has introduced another combo for Commander players to assemble to the sorrow of their table. This combo combines the new Shark Shredder, Super Clone with Breath of Fury and Mass Hysteria for one magnificent, lethal combat phase.
The Core Combo
The core combo, in its cheapest iteration, requires Shark Shredder, Killer Clone, Mass Hysteria, and any other creature enchanted with Breath of Fury. Your opponents also need to have creatures in the graveyard, and both of your creatures must be able to deal combat damage to a player. Assuming you meet those requirements, you get this loop:
- Attack with Shark Shredder and Breath of Furyโs creature.
- Shark Shredder deals first strike damage, reanimating a creature from an opponentโs graveyard.
- Then the enchanted creature deals combat damage; resolve Breath of Furyโs trigger, then attach it to the newly reanimated creature. If the enchanted creature has first strike, then stack the triggers so Shark Shredderโs resolves first. This will not work if the enchanted creature has double strike.
- Move to the extra combat from Breath of Fury. Because all creatures have haste (thanks, Mass Hysteria!), you can attack, and go through the loop again. As long as there are at least two creatures in your opponentsโ graveyards you can bounce Breath of Fury between, it goes infinite.
This infinite combo results in a great number of things. Infinite combats and infinite damage are probably all it takes to win the game, but it thatโs not good enough, you get infinite death triggers, infinite enters triggers, infinite leaves the battlefield triggers, infinite mana your creatures you control produce (since they all get untapped, even if they donโt attack), infinite ability activations of creatures you control, and infinite untap triggers in case you want to get freaky with Wake Thrasher.
Strengths & Weaknesses

No combo is perfect. This oneโs primary weakness is the three requirements; three cards is a lot, so donโt expect this to make waves in cEDH. But itโs very appropriate for Bracket 3. Itโs also fragile: one Swords to Plowshares or even a well-timed Offalsnout fizzles the whole thing.
But donโt take that to mean itโs unplayable. A good combo relies on cards that are useful in more than one scenario, and weโre almost there. Shark Shredder, Killer Clone is a fine threat in an aggressive deck and Breath of Fury works in enough other combos that it can be, if not a multi-facted card, part of several combos to make it more likely to function. Mass Hysteria is trickier, though. Itโs arguably not a good card since you give your opponents haste for free with no reason not to attack you. But there are other options for haste-granting abilities; Mass Hysteria is simply the cheapest.
For 3 mana, you can find cards like Hammer of Purphoros, Tuktuk Rubblefort, and Fervor that give just your creatures haste. Or you can reach for cards that give a creature haste at the beginning of combat, like Reckless Stormchaser. This might work best when we add green to the mix for more substantial cards like Xenagos, God of Revels and Halana and Alena, Partners. These effects trigger at the beginning of your extra combats, but also work well independently of the combo.
We also need to consider the combat damage aspect. While a 4/4 first strike is hard to block, the same might not be true for your Breath of Fury creature. Luckily, red is very good at making it so creatures canโt block. Sundering Eruption is top-tier since the floor is a Mountain. Falter, Magnetic Chasm, and Gruul Charm get points for efficiency. Looking towards cards that do more than help the combo plus cards from other colors, you can reach for Headliner Scarlet (which only gets one playerโs blockers, but that could be enough), Sleep effects, and Taunt from the Ramparts.
Even though it might be unwieldy, this Shark Shredder, Killer Clone combo is perfect for Rakdos players interested in giving their deck inevitability without going beyond their bracket of choice. It even branches into three-color decks well!
