Peel from Reality | Illustration by Jason Felix
It's almost time to head into the Echoverse, y'all. Reality Fracture is our next in-universe Magic set, and it's got a pretty fun gimmick to it.
In the lore of the set we see Jace, that pesky planeswalker, construct an entirely new reality (aka the Echoverse) full of colorshifted classics.
Dark Confidant becomes Enlightened Confidant, Snapcaster Mage becomes Stingcaster Mage, etc.
With iconic cards like these in the mix, I started thinkingโฆwhat iconic cards do we here at Draftsim want to see? Instead of waiting, We asked our staff of to create their own Echoverse variants of classic cards.

What if Mother of Runes encouraged destruction instead of preventing it? Shutting down an opponent's creature for a turn can be a necessary move: whether you're blocking something big, or canceling out a Vorinclex, Monstrous Raider.

Invert Fell the Mighty and you've got Massacre the Fragile. I wish they'd design more asymmetrical board wipes like this one, makes for better games of Commander in my opinion!

We all know and love Baleful Strixโฆbut what if it was a nice little guy instead of a baleful little guy? Benign Strix would definitely be an easy buildaround in Limited.

What if Zur the Enchanter wasn't an enchantress card? What if it bent the rules of combat and also synergized with a relatively recent card type? Tim answered all of these questions by designing Zur, Traveling Combatant. In my humble opinion, a new Mardu commander would be a welcome addition to the game.

Royal Assassin is a classic that hails from Limited Edition Alpha, the very first Magic set. Royal Expeller takes it for a dynamic spin that would work wonders in a deck full of Freed from the Real effects.

Hollow One was (is?) a force to be reckoned with in Magic's Modern format, and Sated One would definitely be considered in affinity decks.

Cheating a little bit here because it still has blackโฆbut Elenda, the Dusk Rose is my all-time favorite commander, so I had to have a bit of fun trying to design in a space that hasn't really been explored: Golgari vampires.

I was overjoyed when we finally got Darksteel Splicer, because I'm a shameless fan of the Splicer cycle from Mirrodin (Wing Splicer, Ich-Tekik, Salvage Splicer, etc.)
Could go in wacky Rakdos or Jund zombie decks, or in golem commander decks. I love golems, what can I say.

Take that, Lightning Greaves enjoyers! This rad riff on Leonin Shikari seems like it'd be a welcome addition to any equipment Commander deck, and could be a real force in a Limited format too.

Awe Strike is solid, but Jaw Strike is awesome. Deflecting Palm-style effects are fantastic, nothing feels better than expertly adding the element of surprise to a game of Magic.
Wrap Up
Think there's any chance any of these unofficial custom cards could end up actually getting printed? Or are we all wishful fools?
