Humans are the most popular creature types in Magic: The Gathering, and for good reason. They show up in almost every set, they come in all colors, and theyโ€™re super flexible.

That said, what really makes human decks shine are the lords, creatures that boost your other humans by making them stronger, tougher, or giving them cool abilities. In this article, weโ€™re ranking the best human lords in the game.

Letโ€™s dive in and see which human lords deserve the top spots!

What Are Human Lords in MTG?

Human lords are usually creature cards that boost other humans by giving them bonuses like +1/+1, special abilities, or extra protection. They play a key role in human tribal decks, helping your team hit harder, survive longer, and work better together.

This list focuses on cards that specifically support humans. That means weโ€™re leaving out creatures like Arno Dorian, who's a human, but only boosts assassins. Even if thereโ€™s overlap, the lack of a direct human-focused effect means they donโ€™t make the cut.

Weโ€™re also skipping over general lords like King Darien XLVIII and Benalish Marshal, who boost all creatures but donโ€™t specifically help human synergy. Lastly, cards like Adaptive Automaton that can be slotted into any tribe are being excluded since theyโ€™re not human-exclusive.

#20. Henry Wu, InGen Geneticist

Henry Wu, InGen Geneticist

Henry Wu, InGen Geneticist brings a clever twist to human decks by giving your humans exploit, a keyword that lets you sacrifice another creature for value. What makes it interesting is that it rewards you for sacrificing big non-human creatures: If they had 3 or more power, you get a Treasure in addition to drawing a card. That makes Henry perfect for decks that mix small utility humans with larger beasts or dinos to fuel both ramp and card draw. Flavor-wise, itโ€™s a great nod to the Jurassic Park characterโ€”using science (and questionable ethics) to mix species for powerful results.

#19. Thraben Doomsayer

Thraben Doomsayer

Thraben Doomsayer quietly builds your human army by making 1/1 human tokens every turn, but when things get scary and your life drops to 5 or less, the fateful hour ability it turns into a full-on battle priest. Suddenly all your creatures get +2/+2, which can flip the game fast.

#18. Greymond, Avacyn's Stalwart

Greymond, Avacyn's Stalwart

If you love options, Greymond, Avacyn's Stalwart is your go-to. It gives all your humans two solid keywordsโ€”like lifelink, first strike, or vigilanceโ€”right as it enters. Once you have a solid board of humans (four or more), they also get a hefty +2/+2. Greymond rewards going wide with a big boost in both power and utility.

#17. Beregond of the Guard

Beregond of the Guard

Beregond of the Guard is a nice tempo boost. Every time a human enters under your control, all your creatures (not just humans!) get +1/+1 and vigilance for the turn. That makes it great in token-heavy decks or builds that love flashing in humans on combat steps for a surprise pump effect.

#16. Erkenbrand, Lord of Westfold

Erkenbrand, Lord of Westfold

Erkenbrand, Lord of Westfold pumps your team (including itself) every time a human enters. While it only gives +1/+0 and not vigilance like Beregond, this literal lord still adds lots of surprise damage potential when you go wide. Itโ€™s solid in faster decks that flood the board quickly.

#15. Hamlet Captain

Hamlet Captain

Hamlet Captain may look simple but itโ€™s a total beast in combat. Every time it attacks or blocks, all your other humans get +1/+1 until end of turn. That turns every swing into a potential blowout, especially if you go wide.

#14. Heron's Grace Champion

Heron's Grace Champion

With flash and lifelink, Heron's Grace Champion is a clutch combat trick and pump spell in one. It jumps in at instant speed and suddenly all your humans are bigger and gain you life. That surprise swing or unexpected block can shift a gameโ€™s tempo in your favor.

#13. Riot Ringleader

Riot Ringleader

Similar to the next card, Riot Ringleader rewards aggression by buffing your humans with +1/+0 when it attacks, which helps end games quickly in red-based go-wide decks.

#12. Perimeter Sergeant

Perimeter Sergeant

Perimeter Sergeant may seem simple, but it pulls a lot of weight in aggressive human decks. Whenever it attacks, all your other humans get +1/+0 until end of turn, turning even small token armies into serious threats.

#11. Thalia's Lieutenant

Thalia's Lieutenant

Thalia's Lieutenant is one of the best human payoffs ever printed. When it enters, it gives all your other humans a +1/+1 counter, and every time a new human joins, the Lieutenant grows itself, making it a critical piece in some niche Modern human-typal decks.

#10. Coppercoat Vanguard

Coppercoat Vanguard

Coppercoat Vanguard is a low-cost human lord that pulls double duty. Not only does it give all your other humans +1/+0, making your attacks hit harder, but it also gives them ward , which helps protect them from removal or targeted effects.

That small tax really slows down opponents trying to pick off your key creatures and swings the tempo in your favor, especially when paired with the likes of Thalia, Guardian of Thraben that also taxes your opponents' removal.

#9. General's Enforcer

General's Enforcer

General's Enforcer plays a unique role by making all your legendary humans indestructible, which is huge in Commander where legends are everywhere. On top of that, it exiles graveyard threats and turns them into more humans. Great for both protection and value, especially in Orzhov () decks specifically focused on humans.

#8. Jirina, Dauntless General

Jirina, Dauntless General

Jirina, Dauntless General is a compact, defensive human lord. It clears out a graveyard when it enters, which is always handy, but Jirinaโ€™s real strength lies in its sacrifice abilityโ€”giving all your humans hexproof and indestructible for a turn.

#7. Sigarda, Heron's Grace

Sigarda, Heron's Grace

Sigarda, Heron's Grace isn't a human itself, but it protects them like no one else. Sigarda gives you and your humans hexproof, making it much harder for opponents to mess with your game plan. It also cranks out 1/1 human tokens by exiling cards from your graveyard.

#6. Katilda, Dawnhart Prime

Katilda, Dawnhart Prime

With Katilda, Dawnhart Prime, all your humans suddenly become mana dorks, which can ramp you into big plays way earlier than expected. It also has a late-game button that buffs your entire team. It gets minor bonus points for being werewolf-proof with protection. It works great in decks that want to swarm the board with human tokens and then drop game-ending threats.

#5. Jirina Kudro

Jirina Kudro

Jirina Kudro is the poster child for human tribal in Commander. It rewards casting your commander multiple times by spitting out a bunch of 1/1 Human Soldier tokens, and those tokens arenโ€™t just cannon fodderโ€”they hit hard thanks to the +2/+0 team buff. It pairs well with blink effects and recursion to maximize the token train.

#4. Kyler, Sigardian Emissary

Kyler, Sigardian Emissary

Starting small but growing fast, Kyler, Sigardian Emissary turns every new human you play into a double buffโ€”it gets bigger, then boosts the rest of your humans based on how big it is. Kyler snowballs like crazy in token-heavy builds and makes your board downright terrifying if left unchecked.

#3. Mayor of Avabruck / Howlpack Alpha

Mayor of Avabruck helps your humans by giving them +1/+1, but if no one casts a spell for a turn, it flips into Howlpack Alpha. On that side, it boosts wolves and werewolves instead and makes a 2/2 wolf at the end of each turn. Itโ€™s great in decks that mix humans and werewolves since it supports both depending on which side you control.

#2. Sigarda, Champion of Light

Sigarda, Champion of Light

Sigarda, Champion of Light might not be a human, but it still gives all your humans +1/+1 and helps you find more of them when the coven ability is active. Thanks to flying and trample, it hits hard while your ground team swarms in. Sigarda fits perfectly in decks that make lots of creatures and need help finding the next human to play.

#1. General Kudro of Drannith

General Kudro of Drannith

General Kudro of Drannith brings a lot to the table. It pumps your humans, hates on graveyards, and converts two of your creatures into removal for big threats. Kudroโ€™s like the team captain who also keeps an eye on the enemy bench. Kudro fits best in tight, aggressive human decks that want both pressure and control.
