Cracked New Legend Unlocks Infinite Damage, Power, and Lifegain Combos

Well, The Hobbit is here and we already got a fully Standard legal infinite combo. I feel like we get one of these every set, but this one is pretty sweet, giving you infinite damage, infinite lifegain, and infinite +1/+1 counters out of nowhere to win the game on the spot. But is it good enough for Standard, or is it just a pipe dream?

The Combo

Assembling this combo only takes three easy steps. Firstly, you want to have The Great Goblin in play. Second, you also want to have Heroic Feast in play. Finally, you want to have either an Alchemist's Assistant or a Qarsi Revenant in your graveyard. Activate its renew ability to put a lifelink counter on The Great Goblin, and watch the combo unfold.

The counter being put on The Great Goblin triggers its ability, causing it to deal 2 damage to target opponent. Since it has lifelink from the counter, you will gain 2 life, which causes the Heroic Feast to trigger and puts a +1/+1 counter on The Great Goblin. This triggers it again and the loop starts over, resulting in infinite life gain, infinite damage, and an infinitely large creature.

Standard Viable?

One of the upsides of this combo is that it's entirely Standard legal. Now as for if it will see any play in the format, it's hard to say right now. We just got some major bannings, and The Hobbit just released, so the format is a bit shaken up at the moment to say the least. That being said, there are some features of this combo that make it seem like it could be at least somewhat viable in the format.

First is the fact that it only requires you to play two colors, green and black. That means you won't have to stretch your mana in strange ways to make it work. The second thing that makes it more promising is the fact that there is some redundancy, as you can utilize either Alchemist's Assistant or Qarsi Revenant. Even better, these are cards that you are generally fine with playing and trading away in combat to activate their ability from the graveyard later, and this will buy you time to set up the combo.

Finally, because this combo package is somewhat compact and the creatures in the combo are close-ish to cards you might play anyways, it means that the deck you build around it can be better than you might think. You can play a fair green black midrange shell with good removal and interaction and have it not feel like you're stretching your deck too thin, and perhaps you'll even play games where you can win without the combo, simply attacking and killing your opponent in combat.

Granted, there are also some issues with a deck like this. Three card combos can often be a bit clunky, and Heroic Feast isn't exactly great on its own. And despite Standard being shaken up at the moment, it's only a matter of time before it settles, and it's hard to imagine the format being slow enough or lacking interaction enough to support this kind of combo without a bit of help.

Standard is a format that in recent times has been very unforgiving to decks without the tightest of gameplans. There were games often ending on turn three or four while Badgermole Cub was legal, and even though it's now gone, there are plenty of decks that still operate with the efficiency to end games by turn four. All that being said, don't forget this combo. Standard will rotate at the end of the year, and with that we will have a truly new format, perhaps one that's more conducive to a combo deck like this one.

Hopefully this combo gets its time to shine, because it just looks like too much fun to pass up, and I know that I'll be trying my hardest to make it work. And who knows, it might just be better than you think. What do you think of this combo? Will you be testing it out in Standard?
