Niv Mizzet Ghost Counsel Brian Valeza

Reality Fractureโ€™s Multiverse Reforged precon played with polymorph themes and powerful what-if variants of iconic Magic characters. One of the most exciting is Niv-Mizzet, Ghost Council, a powerful Orzhov () commander that combos with one of Magicโ€™s most iconic villains, in the lore and game both: Sheoldred, the Apocalypse.

Niv-Mizzet, Ghost Counsel

The new Niv-Mizzet lets you pay life when when you gain life to draw cards, and taps to gain a life. Itโ€™s styled after Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind and works with many cool cards. These are the spells I recommend starting with when brewing Niv-Mizzet, Ghost Counsel.

Sheoldred, the Apocalypse

Sheoldred, the Apocalypse

The marquee combo is Sheoldred, the Apocalypse drawing your deck. When you draw a card, youโ€™ll gain two life. That triggers Niv-Mizzet, so you can draw two more cards. That triggers Sheoldred to gain more life, and before you know it, your deckโ€™s in your hand.

Winning from there should be simple. Dig into some rituals and fast mana to power out some sort of infinite loop. Children of Korlis plus a Sanguine Bond effect knocks somebody out of the pod, or you could set up something silly with Doctor Doom, Unrivaled.

Approach of the Second Sun

Approach of the Second Sun

Approach of the Second Sunโ€™s biggest problem is the timer it gives your opponent. When you resolve the first copy, they know they need to kill you fast or youโ€™ll get an easy alternate win. Niv-Mizzet solves this: Because you gain 7 life, you can draw 7 cards and put it right back into your hand. You probably wonโ€™t have the mana to cast it right away, but your opponents only have a single turn before you win.

Tablet of the Guilds

Tablet of the Guilds

Tablet of the Guilds becomes a card advantage engine. You name black and white and most of your spells gain at least a life, so they cantrip. Orzhov () spells draw two. There are similar effects like Staff of the Death Magus or Angel's Feather, but Tablet is particularly efficient and doesnโ€™t rely on your opponents being in specific colors.

Soul Sisters

Okay, so recommending that you play Souls Sisters with the lifegain commander is rather obvious, but the synergy is so sick, especially with Sisters like Soul Warden and Soul's Attendant that see your opponentsโ€™ creatures enter. You can draw a card whenever any player plays any creature, which is pretty insane.

Additionally, many lifegain payoffs create tokens. Your Soul Sisters set up cards like Griffin Aerie and Crested Sunmare, then reward you further for gaining life by drawing cards off the tokens you create.

Peace of Mind + Trading Post

Maybe lifegain isnโ€™t your thing. You find it too low impact or unexciting or something. But can I tempt you with Ancestral Recall?

Players love going โ€œthis is basically Ancestral Recallโ€ but thereโ€™s merit here. If you activate Peace of Mind, you trade one mana and a card to draw three. Trading Post does it even better since you draw four cards. These cards are certainly worse without Niv-Mizzet but not unplayable since the threshold for many lifegain payoffs is three life. Plus youโ€™re in black, so you can play a couple reanimation effects to abuse the discard outlet.

Gotta say, I prefer it in the 99 with [Queza, Augur of Agonies] as the commander. Gives you blue, knocks out at least a couple opponents simply drawing your deck with the combo, and gives you [Shabraz, the Skyshark] as well, so you have three options to combo with Niv, one of which is in the command zone. [Dawn of Hope], [Well of Lost Dreams], and [Oloro, Ageless Ascetic] aren’t as good as Niv, because they require paying mana, but give some redundancy. [Drogskol Reaver] doesn’t require mana, although it’s expensive, for more redundancy.
