Jace, Multiverse Architect | Illustration by Volkan Baga
If a set only has one Commander precon, it needs to be a banger. I’m happy to say that Reality Fracture delivered with Multiverse Reforged.
It has a planeswalker commander, a polymorph theme, four colors, awesome cards… it hits across the board. Of course, that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for improvement. If you want to maximize the precon's potential without starting from the ground up, I have a few ideas for you.

Multiverse Reforged is a 4-color precon without green designed around polymorph effects. For the unfamiliar, the card class was named after Mirage‘s Polymorph and refers to cards that destroy a creature (and sometimes artifact) and flip cards off the top of the library until they reveal something to replace it with.
The face commander is Jace, Multiverse Architect, a planeswalker with a polymorph ability, so you get the first one pretty often. These upgrades assume you keep Jace in command instead of swapping it for the backup commander, Nissa, Leyline Tamer (it’s also the correct choice as Jace is a vastly stronger commander).
- JACE’S SOLUTION. EVERYONE’S PROBLEM—Mastermind mage Jace Beleren has pushed reality to its breaking point. An alternate Multiverse of his own creation threatens to overtake the current one, and just one team of heroes stands in the path of oblivion
- SCULPT THE GREATEST THREATS IN ANY REALITY—Reimagine a new Multiverse with Jace at the helm as you make tokens and warp reality to power up
- 2 FOIL BORDERLESS COMMANDERS—Every Reality Fracture Commander Deck includes 2 Mythic Legendary cards that can be played as your commander, each featuring Borderless art and a shiny Traditional Foil treatment
- INTRODUCES 18 COMMANDER CARDS—Each deck introduces 18 never-before-seen Commander cards to Magic: The Gathering
- THRILLING MULTIPLAYER BATTLES—Battle your friends with powerful creatures and spectacular spells in Commander, Magic’s most popular multiplayer format
Upgrade Plan
I like the deck's core gameplan: It plays cheap, noncreature token makers as fodder for the polymorph effects and flips them into big creatures. I don’t want to mess with that core gameplan, but I do want to improve it.
There are two issues that I can easily fix. First, I want more early token producers to improve the deck’s consistency. Secondly, I’m upgrading the cards you polymorph into. Several of the big creatures are either weak or under-supported Commander designs that couldn't make the main set. Making cuts in these departments improves the deck’s consistency and lethality for smoother gameplay.
Absolute Virtue
Suggested Cut:
It’s 2026. A big beatstick with lots of keywords just doesn’t cut it anymore, so Akroma, Angel of Fury gets the axe, despite its sweet new art. Absolute Virtue retains the big body with a better textbox.
Ashen Rider
Suggested Cut:
My opinion of Jhoira, Weatherlight Corsair has steadily declined since it was previewed. I was worried about hitting Signets and other random mana rocks, but there’s also Wizards’ emphasis on legendary creatures. Many random synergy cards end up being legends; I don’t want to flip a Sythis, Harvest's Hand or Liliana the Faultless into play. So I wanted a more reliable creature.
I know, I know, Ashen Rider in 2026. But if you want a quick budget upgrade, a creature that rewards you for putting it into play and punishes your opponent for removing it does decent work. Summon: Bahamut would be even better in this slot, but $20+ is way more than I want to spend on a precon upgrade.
Ardyn, the Usurper
Suggested Cut:
I completely understand why Wizards didn’t want to put The Ur-Sphinx in the main set, but it has no business being in this deck.
Ardyn, the Usurper can reanimate any of your good creatures that die or profit when your opponents lose creatures. You’re happy either way.
Kefka, Dancing Mad
Suggested Cut:
Niv-Mizzet, Ghost Counsel is in the same boat as The Ur-Sphinx: It’s super cool and incredibly under-supported.
Kefka, Dancing Mad is similar to Niv-Mizzet as a big card advantage engine, but it doesn’t need support to go off, and you don’t need to pay mana for its spells.
Armaggon, Future Shark
Suggested Cut:
Dack Fayden, Helping Hand establishes an infinite combo with Venser, Fervent Forger, but it sucks under any other circumstances. The point of this deck is to play explosive, game-warping creatures. Don’t give them to your opponents. Instead, play Armaggon, Future Shark and deny your opponents their resources.
Nezahal, Primal Tide
Suggested Cut:
I don’t believe in Ginger, Queen of Sweets. The Gingerbrute tokens make taking the crown back easy, but I prefer the monarch in decks built to protect it, not steal it back.
If I’m cheating fatties into play, Nezahal, Primal Tide is always one of the first I reach for. Card advantage, a big body, even built-in protection. What more can you want?
Rune-Scarred Demon
Suggested Cut:
I don’t care for Tamiyo, Upriser Crowned much more than Ginger, though I think it’s the stronger card. I’d rather slap a Rune-Scarred Demon into play and find the best card for my situation, whether that’s another polymorph or tokens to fuel the next polymorph in my hand.
Agent of Treachery
Suggested Cut:
Plan for All Outcomes is a bewilderingly weak card from the main set. I guess Wizards is as liable to grab the first thing that comes to mind for card number 100 as anybody.
Agent of Treachery steals a card from your opponent forever, which makes it an excellent answer to commanders or anything you struggle to remove. Getting the threat on your side can be backbreaking.
Tyrant’s Familiar
Suggested Cut:
Whirlwind of Thought is a perfectly respectable card in spellslinger decks, but that’s not what you're doing. Better to trim it for something more impactful.
I might like Tyrant's Familiar too much, but it’s a great threat that binds aggression and interaction. Killing a creature helps protect Jace while pressuring your opponent, which is a great combo.
Shadow Summoning + Raise the Alarm
Suggested Cuts:
I’m bundling these cards together because the logic’s extremely similar. Shadow Summoning and Raise the Alarm are cheap enough to easily sequence with a polymorph in the same turn and provide multiple bodies for the mass polymorph effects.
I don’t care about Brainstorm and Brainsurge for a similar reason: The deck doesn’t need top-deck manipulation. The threats are fairly interchangeable and there aren’t any combos now that Dack Fayden’s gone.
Tempt with Bunnies
Suggested Cut:
Omnath, Locus of the Void hits very hard and cutting it might be a mistake, but I’ve added quite a few battlecruisers and don’t want to overwhelm the curve.
I wanted more cheap token producers and Tempt with Bunnies is a great one. The baseline is a 1/1 that replaces itself, so you aren’t down cards after the polymorph. And if your opponent takes the tempting offer, you always get a great deal.
Fable of the Mirror Breaker / Reflection of Kiki-Jiki
Suggested Cut:
I hate to say this, but Fact or Fiction is pretty washed. I like it when you care about cards going in the graveyard because it often puts 3+ cards in the ‘yard, including itself, but Multiverse Reforged doesn’t care about self-mill.
It does care about tokens, so I’m all over Fable of the Mirror-Breaker. A card that makes a token and digs for the polymorph is pretty strong. Also, these changes add more creatures with good enters abilities, so you have plenty of cards worth copying.
Identity Echo
Suggested Cut:
Having Jace in the command zone means you have a polymorph every game, but let’s be honest: Going to 1 loyalty means it probably dies, and you can only cast a 5-mana commander so often. Identity Echo looks particularly nice because you can use it repeatedly; theoretically, it can be the only polymorph effect you need to draw. Stroke of Midnight is just a whatever removal spell.
Austere Command
Suggested Cut:
Teferi's Reproach is an exceedingly odd card that I may be underrating. It's maybe interesting with Skullcrack effects to get around the damage prevention of protection and make it a finisher, but this deck can't do any of that. Here, it's just a weird, over-costed fog.
Austere Command solves a few issues. I like the board wipes in the deck, and I like this one because the deck has very few answers to artifacts and enchantments and all the creatures are very large, so you can sweep aside chaff without harming your board.

Commanding Conclusion

Dack Fayden, Helping Hand | Illustration by Josiah ‘Jo' Cameron
I was very prepared to be underwhelmed by Multiverse Reforged, but I’m pleased it exceeded all expectations. It’s got a novel theme, cool commanders and new cards, and a clear enough game plan to upgrade without starting from zero.
