Hello planeswalkers! Gather your clans, and let’s get mythical! We all have our favorite color combinations and the guilds or factions that represent them. My favorite is Dimir (), but a close second is Gruul (). These green and red cards represent the fury of nature and the outsiders of order and control.

There are so many Gruul cards to love, like the iconic Rhythm of the Wild and the flavorful Bigger on the Inside. Today, we'll look at the best mythic rare cards Gruul has to offer. Hard to collect and sometimes quite expensive, these mythic cards tie many Gruul builds together.

What Are Gruul Mythics in MTG?

Gruul mythics are cards with a color combination of green and red, or Gruul, and the mythic rarity indicated by an orange set symbol.

We won’t look at cards with arbitrary mythic printins (with one King of the Monsters exception). One of the greatest examples is Manamorphose, which has been printed at every rarity. There are no mythic Gruul lands, but there are mythic printings of Stomping Ground. We’ll pass on these lands, and on Un-set cards like Ol' Buzzbark.

#26. Samut, the Tested

Samut, the Tested

Samut, the Tested is ranked separately from the other mythic versions of Samut because it’s not as good as the creature versions, but it still has upside as a planeswalker. The cost is right, the plus loyalty ability is quite useful, and the final ability can be a game changer. All adds up to a pretty decent planeswalker.

#25. Mythic Gruul Werewolves

Let’s throw the two mythic Gruul transforming werewolves together: Ulrich of the Krallenhorde and Huntmaster of the Fells. Both these dual-sided cards benefit from changing from day to night often (minus actual daybound/nightbound).

Huntmaster of the Fells and Ravager of the Fells create wolf tokens and deal direct damage as they transform. Ulrich of the Krallenhorde and Ulrich, Uncontested Alpha is a nice pump and removal outlet when it transforms.

#24. Apocalypse Hydra

Apocalypse Hydra

Hydras are all about the extreme growth and X-costs. Apocalypse Hydra is a good Gruul hydra: If you can cast it for X=5 or more, you double up on the counters this creature enters with. Turn that into massive swings, or direct damage.

Savageborn Hydra is another Gruul hydra option that’s good with its double strike, but not as good as Apocalypse Hydra.

#23. Domri Rade

Let’s cover all of the mythic Domri planeswalkers in one go. Domri Rade is the best of the three with its cheap mana value, efficient +1 and -2 loyalty abilities, and a great keyword-soup final ability. This version of Domri is just so efficient that it can find its way into many decks.

Domri, Chaos Bringer is a good ramp planeswalker with a tame final ability, and Domri, City Smasher has a great final ability with some decent middle abilities.

#22. Arlinn Planeswalkers

We’ll throw the two Arlinn Kord transforming planeswalkers together, as they play a bit similarly. Arlinn Kord and Arlinn, the Pack's Hope can pump creatures in different ways or make wolf tokens. The key is to transform into Arlinn, Embraced by the Moon and Arlinn, the Moon's Fury quickly to take advantage of their werewolf sides. The former possesses the game clincher with its final loyalty ability.

#21. Tana, the Bloodsower

Tana, the Bloodsower

I’m not overly impressed with Tana, the Bloodsower by itself, but partner commanders can always be a bit interesting. This card makes Saproling tokens based on the damage it does to a player. If you partner that with another commander like Ravos, Soultender or Sidar Kondo of Jamuraa, you might have something good going.

#20. Vrondiss, Rage of Ancients

Vrondiss, Rage of Ancients

Enrage is one of the most exploitable mechanics out there. Vrondiss, Rage of Ancients can build you an army of dragons each time it is dealt damage. You can easily build little self-pinging strategies around cards like Pyrohemia, or the dice roll trigger on this card’s text.

#19. Klothys, God of Destiny

Klothys, God of Destiny

Klothys, God of Destiny isn’t the biggest or strongest of the Theros gods, but this card does add a ton of value to decks. Its ability works as graveyard hate and possible ramp or possible damage. The consistency of the ability and chance for a nice indestructible creature make Klothys a great Gruul card.

#18. Samut, Voice of Dissent

Samut, Voice of Dissent

Samut, Voice of Dissent is a keyword-soup kind of Gruul card I can get behind! All of the keywords add up to an aggressive creature that can also trick opponents. Strike hard, give haste to all your creatures, and even untap strategic creatures, all from the same card.

Samut, Vizier of Naktamun didn’t make the list, but it’s still a great way to extract card draw from your hasty creatures.

#17. Wrenn and Six

Wrenn and Six

Wrenn and Six is one of the cheapest planeswalkers and a nice addition to landfall decks. Double up on landfall triggers with sac lands like Fabled Passage, and gladly return them to your hand with this planeswalker. Wrenn and Six won’t break games, but the speed is wonderful, especially for Gruul.

#16. Agatha of the Vile Cauldron

Agatha of the Vile Cauldron

Agatha of the Vile Cauldron requires an intentional plan centered around activated abilities. Cost reduction for any aspect of MTG can be powerful, and Agatha helps with some powerful activated ability combos. Any sort of pump that can reduce costs by multiple mana is a winning strategy.

#15. Faldorn, Dread Wolf Herald

Faldorn, Dread Wolf Herald

Faldorn, Dread Wolf Herald is a wonderfully cheap token creator that plays off the red impulse draw. By playing great advantage cards like Hex Magic and Escape to the Wilds (or even lands from exile), you can build an army of Wolf tokens with this card. Building Faldorn into a wolf strategy can have tremendous upsides.

#14. Wolverine, Best There Is

Wolverine, Best There Is

… but not the best Gruul mythic. Wolverine, Best There Is screams for combat tricks and an addition of double strike for an even bigger multiplier on damage. Also, bringing back regenerate fits the character quite well.

#13. Vibrance

Vibrance

Vibrance is one of the evoke elementals from Lorwyn Eclipsed that are good early or late. This card is great for early removal or land fetching, and closing games with direct damage in the later game.

#12. Godzilla, King of Monsters

Godzilla, King of Monsters is going to be our one exception to my “different rarity printings” restriction. It’s just such an iconic character, and a pretty good Gruul card. Many cards assign combat damage based on a card’s toughness, but Godzilla takes a different approach. Your high-powered, low-toughness creatures now strike without fear, as lethal damage will be determined by their power. This is quite fun with creatures like Zendikar Incarnate or pump cards like Unleash Fury.

#11. Wildsear, Scouring Maw

Wildsear, Scouring Maw

Wildsear, Scouring Maw is a great Gruul creature to add to enchantment decks. Grab your red and green enchantments (auras can be particularly good) or widen the color scheme under a commander like Marina Vendrell. Giving cascade to all your enchantments you cast from your hand is a sure-fire way to outpace opponents under a mountain of interactions.

#10. Chishiro, the Shattered Blade

Chishiro, the Shattered Blade

Chishiro, the Shattered Blade is a stellar modified Gruul commander. Surround this card with auras and equipment, and you can make a ton of creature tokens as well as mass pump all your modified creatures. This is the kind of midrange commander that snowballs easily in the right build. So, get building!

#9. Anzrag, the Quake-Mole

Anzrag, the Quake-Mole

Anzrag, the Quake-Mole is a massive and cheap threat to create multiple combat phases every turn. While also untapping all your creatures! It just needs to be blocked. It’s so satisfying to ramp to Anzrag with cards like Llanowar Elves and use cheap combat tricks like Defend the Rider to immediately put a ton of pressure on opponents.

#8. Xenagos, the Reveler

Xenagos, the Reveler

Xenagos, the Reveler can be a ridiculous ramp planeswalker for Gruul. This planeswalker’s +1 loyalty is so good for ramping up creature decks. With a few mana dorks and this loyalty ability, you can shoot up to your Dragonlord Atarka or Ghalta, Stampede Tyrant strategies. And hey, if you can get enough loyalty points, the final loyalty ability is often a game winner.

#7. Klauth, Unrivaled Ancient

Klauth, Unrivaled Ancient

Seven mana for a 4/4? Klauth, Unrivaled Ancient more than makes up for its poor stats-to-cost ratio with its killer mana-making ability. For the aggressive Gruul clans, it shouldn’t be hard to attack with many creatures and rack up some mana from this dragon. This can be taken to the extreme with trigger doublers, and the mana makes it through phases for the rest of the turn. Klauth takes a bit of work to get going, but the payoffs and mana can be huge!

#6. Bello, Bard of the Brambles

Bello, Bard of the Brambles

Bello, Bard of the Brambles is a stellar way to animate your non-equipment artifacts and non-aura enchantments into a great army. This limiting text requires you to build a deck with artifacts like Esika's Chariot and enchantment cards like Berserkers' Onslaught. With a dedicated build, you can have a crazy army of animated permanents and a ton of card draw.

#5. Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes

Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes

You have to love planeswalkers that can be commanders! Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes is a Gruul planeswalker that boosts the very Gruul keywords trample and haste. You can pump great Gruul creatures like Quartzwood Crasher and Grand Warlord Radha, and deal a deadly amount of direct damage with the -2 loyalty ability. The cost, commander legality, and pure upside of loyalty abilities make Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes a killer duo.

#4. Atarka, World Render

Atarka, World Render

Atarka, World Render is possibly the best Gruul dragon there can be. It gives double strike to dragons when any dragon attacks, meaning it adds lethal pressure as soon as it enters. Atarka is no slouch itself, with trample and double strike. With so much red, green, and dragon ramp out there, this card is just pure aggression.

#3. Bumi, Unleashed

Bumi, Unleashed

Bumi, Unleashed is a killer Gruul creature for combat. If opponents aren’t prepared, your land creatures can soon take over in multiple combats per turn. You get to untap lands, which is powerful enough on its own, and then add on top additional combat phases for land creatures. Bumi adds so much value to combat and the second main phase, and that plays right into the Gruul playbook.

#2. Xenagos, God of Revels

Xenagos, God of Revels

You have to love all of the gods from the Theros plane. Xenagos, God of Revels is a particularly good one for its ability and the ease of its devotion restriction. Unlike a mono-color God like Heliod, Sun-Crowned, Xenagos uses a devotion to both red and green. This should be easy to satisfy to get a big indestructible creature. In the meantime and after, it sits around giving a creature a massive pump and haste each turn.

#1. Omnath, Locus of Rage

Omnath, Locus of Rage

Omnath is just ridiculously good in any color combination. The Gruul version, Omnath, Locus of Rage, packs a mean elemental and landfall combo. Sure, this card is a bit expensive, but you can make a ton of huge elemental tokens. Anytime these tokens or your regular elemental cards die, you’re doing direct damage to opponents. This is the kind of combo that’s so easy to pull off and snowballs easily.

That should do it for these riotous rankings. Your clans are full of mythic figures, and it’s time to bring the pain! Mythic cards are some of the most coveted cards in Magic for their monetary value, strategic depth, and mythical character status. Gruul is just one of the color combos, but it has many great mythic cards.
