Magic: The Gathering has always been about more than just the cards. It’s about the worlds, characters, and stories that live behind the artwork. Over the years, that passion has grown into an amazing cosplay scene, and today we’re showcasing some of the best MTG cosplays out there, highlighting the artists and makers who turn the Magic multiverse into something you can experience beyond the table.

What Is MTG Cosplay?

MTG cosplay is a fan-driven creative hobby where players and artists bring Magic: The Gathering to life by dressing up as iconic characters, creatures, and themes from the multiverse.

The most popular characters to cosplay are planeswalkers, though you’ll also see people dressing up as favorite cards or even beloved pet cards from the formats they enjoy most.

Where to Get Started Cosplaying Magic: The Gathering

If you’re looking to get started with MTG cosplay, the best first step is to immerse yourself in the community and gather inspiration. Online spaces like the Magic: The Gathering Cosplay Facebook group and cosplay-focused threads on Reddit are great places to see what others are working on, ask questions, and learn from experienced cosplayers.

For inspiration and practical resources, platforms like Pinterest and Etsy are incredibly useful. Pinterest is packed with MTG cosplay boards that showcase everything from popular planeswalkers like Liliana and Chandra to full guild-themed outfits and prop ideas. Etsy, on the other hand, is perfect if you’re looking to buy or commission specific pieces such as cloaks, armor parts, jewelry, or weapons.

You can also get ideas and even step-by-step guides on YouTube from your favorite content creators.

One thing worth pointing out is how crossover sets with larger franchises, like Spider-Man or Final Fantasy, have opened up even more flexibility for cosplayers. Many players can now reuse costumes across different conventions, or adapt existing outfits into MTG-inspired looks and vice versa. This not only lowers the barrier to entry but also encourages cosplayers outside the Magic community to experiment with MTG designs, helping the cosplay scene grow beyond Magic-only costumes.

Pretty cool take on Garruk Wildspeaker, and the forest background delivers pretty well.

#24. Christine Sprankle – Teysa, Envoy of Ghosts

Teysa cosplay

This is a clean and solid Teysa cosplay with strong execution across the board. With a more thematic background, the fine details of the costume would shine even more.

#23. Sydney Audra/TheFangBanger – Wrenn and Seven

What really sells this Wrenn and Seven cosplay is how realistic the trees look. From a distance, they almost appear real, which is impressive considering the scale and complexity. While it might be too much toll for actual trees as materials, it’s still a very strong and memorable cosplay concept.

#22. yoru-dragon – Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver

Ashiok cosplay

Lighting plays a huge role in this cosplay, but even without it, the design is exceptional. You could recognize this Ashiok from miles away, and it easily stands among the best interpretations of the character. This exact cosplay stole the show at a MagicCon Las Vegas contest in 2022.

#21. MTG Dress

This isn’t a cosplay in the traditional sense, but it’s still a fun and creative option for conventions or even a Halloween party. It’s relatively easy to assemble since most of the materials can be made from bulk cards. The real challenge is putting it all together, but it’s a very budget-friendly idea.

#20. Houstofcard – Ulamog, Ceaseless Hunger

Ulamog cosplay

This version of Ulamog stands out thanks to how the robes blend seamlessly with the black parts of the shoes, creating a strong shadow effect. The four arms are positioned so they move naturally along with the main body, which adds a lot of presence in motion. On top of that, the facial details bring the Eldrazi titan to life.

#19. blarney_armory – Vorinclex, Monstrous Raider

Vorinclex cosplay

Cosplaying non-humanoid creatures is incredibly difficult, but this take on Vorinclex, Monstrous Raider absolutely nails it. From the proportions to the textures, everything feels imposing and faithful to the character, making it instantly recognizable and genuinely impressive.

#18. IchiCosplayArt – Kiora, Behemoth Beckoner

Not only does the dress match Kiora’s color palette beautifully, but the body paint adds that extra layer of authenticity. That level of detail elevates the entire cosplay.

#17. FioreSofen – Nahiri, Heir of the Ancients

Nahiri cosplay

Cosplay isn’t just about the costume, it’s also about the scene, and this one delivers on both. The engraved details on the sword immediately draw attention, and the color work makes it look like Nahiri just pulled it fresh from the forge.

#16. Christine Sprankle- Elspeth Tirel

Elspeth cosplay

Even years later, this remains one of the best cosplays I’ve ever seen. It perfectly captures Elspeth as the powerful and iconic planeswalker she is, and it still holds up incredibly well today, despite Elspeth being an angel now.

#15. Kaliopey – Archangel Avacyn

Avacyn cosplay

This cosplay captures Avacyn right on the edge of transforming into her fury form. The red and white wings work perfectly, and the armor and staff are packed with solid, well-executed details.

#14. 20Tourniquet02’s art&cosplay – Liliana of the Veil

The level of detail on this dress is incredible. It strongly resembles the Liliana of the Veil design we saw in Dominaria United, especially with the blue and purple tones that really tie it together.

#13. Mbare – Sorin Markhov

Another excellent cosplay that hits all the right notes: strong armor design, sharp detailing, and makeup that highlights Sorin’s iconic vampire features perfectly, which led them to win the 2024 MTG Cosplay Contest in Amsterdam.

#12. TechnicolorTraveler – MTG Armor

Remember the MTG dress? This takes that idea to the next level. Everything from the armor and helmet to the sword and shield is made from MTG bulk cards, and the result is both creative and surprisingly cohesive.

#11. @quee_cosfail – Chandra Naalar

Planeswalker cosplays are very popular, especially Chandra and Liliana, so standing out isn’t easy. This one does it effortlessly, thanks to the flaming hair complete with lighting effects that glow in the dark. It’s a brilliant touch that makes the cosplay unforgettable.

A very detailed cosplay of Ral, Caller of Storms, almost feels like you are seeing the character IRL. Well, I guess you are.

#7. cheychey.cos – Ajani Goldmane

Ajani is a tough character to pull off, being a hulking bipedal cat and all, but this cosplay captures his strength and nobility perfectly.

#6. Emross_Elyando – Urza's Armor

This is a fantastic example of how an iconic Magic artifact can be translated into real-life armor. The craftsmanship and proportions sell the idea immediately, and this depiction of Urza's Armor feels like something pulled straight out of Dominaria.

#5. Darkpactcosplay – Elesh Norn

Cosplaying Elesh Norn is no small feat, and this version absolutely delivers. The sharp lines, stark colors, and imposing silhouette capture the praetor‘s unsettling perfection compleatly.

#4. Atom Barnello – Fblthp, The Lost

Fblthp cosplay

This is hands down one of the most charming MTG cosplays you’ll ever see. The simplicity works in its favor, and the confused, out-of-place energy is exactly what makes Fblthp so lovable. It’s humorous, clever, and instantly recognizable to any Magic fan.

#3. Alan Marling – Stitcher Geralf

This cosplay leans heavily into character, and that’s what makes it shine. The lab-inspired outfit, props, and expression perfectly capture Geralf’s mad scientist persona. Kudos for literally stitching a copy of Stitcher Geralf to the lab coat.

#2. tinyteaspoons – Gisa, Glorious Resurrector

Gisa cosplay

For me, the most important part of cosplay is instant recognition, and this one screams Ghoulcaller Gisa at first glance. From the attitude to the outfit, everything comes together perfectly to sell the character.

#1. TeferiMagic – Teferi, Hero of Dominaria

Teferi cosplay

This doesn’t feel like someone cosplaying Teferi; it feels like Teferi himself stepped out of the multiverse. An outstanding execution that truly brings the character to life.
