Commander precons are a common commodity in modern Magic. Gone are the days of a single set of Commander releases per year; now, we’ve come to expect them from virtually any and every new set, and Masters sets are no exception. But if you’re going to tote around the name Commander Masters, you’d better deliver some truly jaw-dropping precons.

So let’s break down each of the four decks in the Commander Masters line-up and determine whether your jaw should in fact drop or whether it’ll remain firmly rooted to your mandible line.

These decks have some big shoes to fill, so let’s see how well they fill ‘em!.

The Commander Masters EDH decks are a set of four preconstructed Commander decks accompanying Commander Masters (CMM), a set focused on creating a draftable Commander experience as well as providing valuable reprints of popular Commander staples.

While the main CMM set is made up entirely of reprints, the precons each include 10 new cards per deck, with some innovative themes never used in Commander precons.

Altogether, each precon includes 100 total cards, including two foil legendary creatures. A thicker, foil-etched version of the face commander is also included, as well as 10 double-sided tokens, a life counter, a deck box, and a helper card. Sealed precons also include a 2-card Collector Booster Sample Pack with random contents.

Since Commander Masters is an all-reprint set with no specific plane or worldbuilding in mind, these commander precons pull from popular archetypes and settings across all Magic. They also include a couple of firsts for the growing line-up of Commander precons. With the exception of Enduring Enchantments, these are fan-service decks exploring some beloved themes and archetypes.

Sliver Swarm

Sliver Swarm

Commander, Theme, and Strategy

The deck title says it all. Magic’s third-ever 5-color precon is a sliver deck, making it one of two typal decks revolving around a creature type with a huge fanbase. Slivers are creatures with abilities that benefit other slivers, making this a tight, synergistic deck all about flooding the board with as many slivers as possible with as many abilities as they can get.

The face commander is Sliver Gravemother, a 5-color Mirror Gallery for slivers that gives them all encore from the graveyard. Rukarumel, Biologist is the back-up commander of the deck, and it turns most creatures you control into the type of your choice. Gravemother is likely the more powerful option if you’re playing straight out of the box, but Rukarumel easily goes on to be the more popular legend in Commander as a whole, since it can serve as the commander for any deck built around a specific creature type.

From a strategic standpoint, slivers have never been the most complicated creatures in Magic, and in a lot of ways a sliver deck ends up playing itself. The play patterns are repetitive but fun, and the creature type has its lovers and haters. Enfranchised players already know which side of the line they stand on, but slivers are always a fun way to invite a newer player into the world of typal decks.

Notable Cards: Reprints and $$

As a rule of thumb for these precons, I won’t be speculating on the prices of new-to-Magic cards in these decks. The pre-order prices are always wildly inflated, and it’s hard to tell where they’ll even out. Monetary evaluations will only apply to reprints.

Sliver Swarm includes 13 cards between $2-5, two cards between $5-10, and Sliver Hivelord as the only $10+ reprint. The deck has received criticism for its lackluster mana base, which is serviceable for a precon but seems like a minimal-effort attempt at a mana base for a 5-color precon at this price point. The omission of Sliver Hive is especially problematic, causing the staple mana-fixer to skyrocket in price.

Sliver Gravemother

Aside from Sliver Gravemother, this precon features five new mono-colored slivers, one for each color. The abilities they bestow to your slivers include goading (), impulse drawing (), the monarch (), replicate (), and afflict/amass (). The slivers from Magic 2014 also received art reworks to match the swarm’s original aesthetic, since their new art direction was received poorly in that set.

I expect Rukarumel, Biologist to be a popular typal commander in the same vein as Morophon, the Boundless. Titan of Littjara and Descendants' Fury are other standouts from the deck that should fit into a wide number of other typal decks.

The Verdict

This precon won’t convert long-time sliver-haters, but it provides enough new support for players who already have a coveted sliver deck while also squeezing in a few universally playable typal support cards. It provides fun — but binary — gameplay, and aside from the generic typal tools, it doesn’t offer much for existing non-sliver decks.

However, if you're invested in playing Slivers, you can follow our Sliver Swarm Upgrade Guide to improve on these unfortunate areas.

Commander, Theme, and Strategy

Planeswalker Party is WotC's first attempt at a “superfriends” precon, or a planeswalker-centric deck. Planeswalkers have appeared in precons before, but they’re usually capped at one per deck. This precon has 18. Yeah, these decks aren’t being built for beginners anymore.

Commodore Guff

Commodore Guff gets its first dedicated card as the face commander of the deck. With Guff as the commander, you’re incentivized to get as many planeswalkers on board as possible and protect them. The alternate commander is Leori, Sparktouched Hunter. While it works just fine in this precon, Leori’s probably best at the helm of a superfriends deck focused on only one or two specific planeswalker characters.

The deck has pillow fort elements meant to keep your opponents from attacking your planeswalkers, and it features a number of ways to get extra loyalty counters on your team. Virtually none of the planeswalkers included have devastating ultimates, so the effects that let you “cheat” extra loyalty onto your walkers aren’t as tilting or game-breaking as they otherwise might seem.

If you like this deck's strategy and style, take a glance at our Planeswalker Party Upgrade Guide to see where it can be improved upon.

Notable Cards: Reprints and $$

Planeswalker Party includes nine reprints between $2-5, four cards between $5-10, as well as Chandra, Awakened Inferno and The Chain Veil with price tags over $10 and $20, respectively. This also marks the first significant reprint of The Chain Veil since Magic 2015, though it did appear on The List.

This deck introduces a new Commander staple to the format: Guff Rewrites History. It’s neither strictly better nor worse than Chaos Warp. But Chaos Warp still sees significant play to this day, which leads me to believe Guff Rewrites History should make its way into plenty of decks.

In addition to Commodore Guff, this deck also marks the first appearance of Vronos, Masked Inquisitor on a standalone card. Vronos was most well-known for his appearance in the Duels of the Planeswalkers video games.

The Verdict

Planeswalker Party is a flashy Commander deck exploring new territory for a precon. It’s a bit too complicated for newer players, but it should be a blast for anyone with a solid understanding of how best to use planeswalkers. As with any superfriends deck, strategies like this tend to lead to prolonged games due to opponents expending resources and combat steps dealing with planeswalkers instead of threatening life totals.

The reprints value is quite good overall, assuming you’re getting this precon at a reasonable price, and the first-time card treatment for characters like Vronos, Commodore Guff, and Leori is fun to see. It’s definitely one of the splashier themes from this product lineup.

Commander, Theme, and Strategy

As an Abzan () enchantress deck, Enduring Enchantments is the least novel deck of the bunch. That’s not to say it’s not unique or interesting, because it has a cool spin on the enchantress archetype, which we’ve seen at the forefront of Commander 2015’s Call the Spirits and Commander 2018’s Adaptive Enchantment.

This deck is best described as “enchantment reanimator,” and it gives the color trio an enchantress presence it didn’t previously have. Anikthea, Hand of Erebos is the face commander, allowing you to dredge up animated enchantments from your graveyard on ETB and attacks. Narci, Fable Singer takes a different spin on the deck, forming something of an enchantment aristocrats strategy with a heavy emphasis on sagas.

The goal is fairly straightforward (play enchantments), and the deck should play well out of the box regardless of which commander you put in the command zone. It’s a value-oriented deck with plenty of powerful constellation payoffs and enchantment-based finishers.

Notable Cards: Reprints and $$

Enduring Enchantments includes seven reprints between $2-5 and three between $5-10, with Dryad of the Ilysian Grove and Starfield of Nyx both coming in over $10 each.

Battle at the Helvault

The deck offers little in the way of must-have Commander staples, instead fleshing out enchantress decks with new tools and payoffs. These additions are unlikely to translate into other decks well, though I’ll call out Battle at the Helvault as an awesome design that creates an Avacyn token.

The mana base also seems notably poor quality to me. Planeswalker Party includes a few mid-tier dual lands like Cascade Bluffs and Mystic Gate, while this precon is playing Tainted lands and other low-tier dual lands.

The Verdict

Enduring Enchantments is a cool take on an Abzan enchantress/reanimator deck. Despite having the least novelty of the decks in this lineup, this precon has more strategic depth than the others, and provides a fun and interesting out-of-the-box experience. It has respectable reprint value and introduces some great new cards for enchantress decks, though the individual pieces aren’t as flexible as offerings from some of the other decks.

Eldrazi Unbound

Eldrazi Unbound

Commander, Theme, and Strategy

Eldrazi Unbound is another innovative Commander deck since it’s the first ever fully colorless precon. The name is a bit misleading though. While it features new and familiar Eldrazi cards, it’s actually only half dedicated to Eldrazi, with the other half containing generic artifact support. That’s to be expected, but the themes are split down the middle. For reference, imagine if the Sliver Swarm precon were half slivers, half zombies or something along those lines.

To drive home this point, only one of the two new legendary creatures is an Eldrazi. Zhulodok, Void Gorger is the face commander, and one of only two new Eldrazi creatures in the deck. The alternate commander is Omarthis, Ghostfire Initiate, a commander focused on the manifest mechanic. Even though it’s cool in its own right, it has no inherent Eldrazi synergies at all. They’re both intriguing new colorless legends, but they highlight the somewhat misleading deck title.

The out-of-the-box strategy is exactly what you’d expect from a completely colorless Commander deck: a heavy emphasis on artifact ramp, top-end threats, and utility lands to round out an unrestrictive mana base. However, you could always upgrade the deck!

Notable Cards: Reprints and $$

It That Betrays

Eldrazi Unbound includes 10 reprints between $2-5, three cards between $5-10, and It That Betrays as the only one above $10 (with new art to boot!).

Due to the colorless nature of the deck, this precon is full of staple lands and payoffs for artifact decks. It’s difficult to upgrade since you have to adhere to such a restrictive color identity, but it’s exceptionally easy to scrap for parts since every card can technically go in any other deck.

The new additions are a big win here and for this series of precons as a whole. Almost all the new cards in this precon are cool, splashy, powerful effects that I expect to see in other Commander decks. Rise of the Eldrazi is a particularly awesome standout, combining the cast triggers on the three original Eldrazi titans and name-dropping Rise of the Eldrazi. This deck might have whiffed on its advertised theme a little bit, but cards like Flayer of Loyalties and Desecrate Reality are exactly what I was hoping this deck would deliver. It did that, just only half-way.

The Verdict

Eldrazi Unbound could have done with a different deck name, since it set the expectation of a fully-focused Eldrazi precon but only half committed to the theme. The deck itself is great, with one of the most impressive rosters of new cards I’ve ever seen in a precon. The “wow factor” of a completely colorless precon works for me, and it should give you plenty of useful tools, new and old, for your collection.

The Best Commander Masters EDH Deck

For Value

Planeswalker Party

Excluding new-to-Magic additions, these decks are fairly even in terms of reprint value and relevance. The Planeswalker Party precon includes The Chain Veil as the most expensive reprint in the set, but each individual deck has at least one high-ticket card and plenty of cards that fall in the middle.

It’s important to address the presale prices for these decks at the time of writing. Some of these decks have been the subject of extreme price gouging, more than I’ve ever seen for retail Commander precons. Some presale prices reached or exceeded $100 per deck, giving players the impression that these would be premium products with high-value reprints. That was never the intention, and the precons aren’t worth the price that many retailers are selling them for.

Many retailers are piggybacking off the jacked-up price of the main Commander Masters set to sell these precons at a much higher price point than previous precons, which is neither fair nor justified by the contents of the decks. Eldrazi, slivers, and superfriends are all exciting new territory for Commander precons, but the overall contents of these decks falls in line with the expected value of any other Commander releases we’ve seen with previous sets. $50 is already fairly expensive, but $100 is a predatory price point for what’s included in these precons.

I feel compelled to remind players to buy within their means and focus on purchasing singles if the new cards are the main appeal to you. None of the decks are worth $100, but as always, I’ll leave it to you to make an educated decision about whether the purchase is right for you. I’d be much more comfortable recommending these if you can find them around the $50 mark.

For Competitive EDH

Enduring Enchantments

Commander precons are hardly ever ready for competitive EDH, or “cEDH,” out of the box, but I believe Enduring Enchantments shows the most potential for higher-level EDH. Anikthea, Hand of Erebos strikes me as the type of card that can pull off some wildly powerful combos, and it lends itself to cheating expensive enchantments into play.

Planeswalker Party is clearly more of a gimmick deck than a full-on cEDH viable one, but a few tweaks could make it a contender. The deck already features Deepglow Skate and similar cards, so a few adjustments to the planeswalkers in the deck could lead to some game-winning two-card combos.

For Fun

Eldrazi Unbound

If these decks excel at anything, it’s the fun factor. They all provide fresh, new strategies never seen in Commander precons, and they all have something exciting to offer. If we’re talking about the out-of-the-box experience, I’ll have to give the nod to Eldrazi Unbound. Casting giant colorless creatures satisfies the Timmy in me, and the new additions to the deck are flat-out awesome.

Honorable mention to the sliver precon, which will certainly have its fans. Again, the player base has always been divided in a love/hate war with slivers, but it’s bound to satisfy sliver aficionados and maybe even win over some new players.

Commanding Conclusion

Anikthea, Hand of Erebos - Illustration by Magali Villeneuve

Anikthea, Hand of Erebos | Illustration by Magali Villeneuve

Commander Masters pushed hard to deliver a set of new, novel precons to accompany the mainline reprint set. They mostly succeeded, even if the hype of the main set resulted in unjustified price-gouging for the decks. That’s a real shame, because these are some of the coolest themes ever to be explored in Commander precons.

I imagine the sliver and Eldrazi precons will go down as some of the most memorable Commander precons of all time, with the other two offering their fair share of fun new additions to the format. The card quality is certainly there, but only if you can find these at a reasonable price.
