Three words. Arena. Powered. Cube.

That's right, Arena's taking one step closer towards making Vintage Cube a reality on MTGA, with over 100 new cards dropping on the digital platform this October. A week from now, you'll be playing with Power Nine, Upheaval, Preordain, and more classics you've probably played with in paper or on Magic Online.

Arena Powered Cube comes to MTGA on October 28, bringing with it a bunch of Magic classics, and some of the best cards ever printed. These cards will debut as part of a new Limited Cube experience catered to Magic Arena's card pool, complete with tons of newcomers that'll be familiar to long-time Vintage Cube enthusiasts. “Cube Prize Packs” will allow players to add these cards to their collection, though many of the cards will be craftable outside of Cube events as well.

Note that some cards being introduced to Arena this way won't be craftable or collectible right away (with the implication that they will be eventually). They specifically noted that the Power Nine cards and original duals won't be Constructed legal “any time soon.”

The Cube Prize packs structure is:

  • 7 total cards
  • 1 Timeless-legal rare or mythic (excludes Universes Beyond sets or cards banned in Timeless)
  • 1 Cube bonus sheet rare or mythic
  • 1 “Flex card” which can be Timeless-legal rare or uncommon, or a bonus sheet card in 50% of packs
  • 2 Timeless-legal uncommons
  • 2 Timeless-legal commons

As for new-to-Magic cards coming to Arena, the team wasn't quite ready to reveal the entire list, though they gave some hints at cards you can expect. Any guesses as to what these might be?

Cube Events

Players will be able to join Powered Cube events from October 28 through November 18, and it'll be offered as Best-of-1 Ranked or Best-of-3 Unranked. Entry is the same as a normal Premier/Traditional event (10,000 gold or 1,500 gems). These are phantom events, so you don't add cards you draft to your collection; you only keep the cards you get from Cube Prize packs.

Premier Best-of-One

The following prize structure will be used for Best-of-One Cube drafts, which allow you to play to seven wins or three losses, whichever comes first:

  • 0 Wins: 50 gems, 1 Historic Booster (and booster with cards legal in Historic)
  • 1 Win: 100 gems, 1 Historic Booster
  • 2 Wins: 250 gems, 2 Historic Boosters
  • 3 Wins: 1,000 gems, 2 Historic Boosters
  • 4 Wins: 1,400 gems, 3 Historic Boosters
  • 5 Wins: 1,600 gems, 4 Historic Boosters, 1 Cube Prize pack
  • 6 Wins: 1,800 gems, 4 Historic Boosters, 2 Cube Prize packs
  • 7 Wins: 2,200 gems, 4 Historic Boosters, 3 Cube Prize packs.

Traditional Best-of-Three

And here's the prize structure for Traditional Draft, in which you always play three unranked matches:

  • 0 Wins: 100 gems, 1 Historic Booster
  • 1 Win: 250 gems, 1 Historic Booster
  • 2 Wins: 1,000 gems, 2 Historic Boosters, 1 Cube Prize pack
  • 3 Wins: 2,500 gems, 3 Historic Boosters, 2 Cube Prize packs, 2 Play-In Points

Bonus Sheet, First Iteration

This bonus sheet will change over time, and gives the Arena team a method of introducing new or existing cards to the platform, namely cards with new art, historical cards that aren't yet on Arena, or paper-exclusive cards like Commander prints and the like. The first wave of bonus sheet cards include the following (with potentially altered art from what is shown below):

Fireblast, Preordain, Pyrokinesis, and Seething Song will be pre-banned in Historic due to power level.

This is a massive power level boost to Arena, even if some of the cards can't be immediately crafted. The bonus sheet cards should be available immediate after release, but it looks like we'll have to wait on the truly degenerate stuff to hit your favorite format. Until then, enjoy playing the event as Arena's Cube offerings inch ever closer to Vintage Cube status.
