It's that MTG Arena season again!

Roughly a month after a premier Magic set hits Arena, WotC releases its companion Alchemy mini-set: 30 digital-only cards to complement the main set.

And to go along with it, the Arena Store stocks the one-time purchase Alchemist Bundle for that particular set.

So, savvy shoppers that we are, should we spend our hard-grinded gems and gold on said bundle? Let's find out!

What Comes in the Alchemist Bundle?

The Alchemist Bundle comes with 20x Alchemy packs for the latest Alchemy set. It costs either 3,000 gems or 15,000 gold, which is a nice 25% discount on the price of regular packs (at regular prices, you'd have to pay either 4,000 gems or 20,000 gold for those 20 packs).

The 20 packs also contribute to your Golden Pack progress, so you walk away with two Golden Packs as well!

And, of course, when you crack those packs you get the regular wildcard track progress โ€“ that works the exact same way for any Arena booster pack.

As a rule of thumb, the Alchemist Bundle becomes available on the Arena Store about a month after the main set is released. For example: Tarkir: Dragonstorm released on Arena on April 8, so less than a month later, the Alchemist Bundle for Alchemy: Tarkir was available at the store.

Is the Alchemist Bundle Worth It?

It depends on whether you play the formats that can use Alchemy cards (namely Alchemy, Historic, Brawl, and Timeless). If youโ€™re a Standard-only player, the Alchemy cards are mostly worthless.

Then it depends on whether the cards in the Alchemy mini-set includes cards that you want. These are fairly small (30 cards total: 5 mythics, 15 rares, and 15 uncommons), so it's not hard to open a card you're looking for among 20 packs or about 120 cards total.

What Do You Get Out of the Bundle?

In an Alchemist Bundle, you get:

  • 20x Alchemy packs of the specific set you buy (which earns two Golden Packs)

Each Alchemy pack contains slots for each rarity:

  • 3 Uncommons from this particular Alchemy set
  • 1 Rare or mythic from that same Alchemy set
  • 4 Commons from the main set.

If I crack open an TDM Alchemy pack, I'll get uncommons and mythic/rares from TDM Alchemy, but commons from the regular TDM set. That's where a collection tracker like Arena Tutor comes in handy!

With Arena Tutor, you can see your collection, how much of that set you've acquired and your vault progress. Arena Tutor also helps you decide which decks to craft based on your current collection and the wildcards required for the top decks under the metagame tab.

Breakdown of the Numbers

If we look strictly at the number of packs you get, the Alchemist Bundle is great value: You get 20 packs for the price of 15.

It's that simple and straightforward!

As you can see in the image below, the standard price for 10 packs is 2,000 gems or 10,000 gold. Instead of purchasing that twice (that's to say, 4K gems or 20K gold) for 20 packs, the Alchemist Bundle gives you those 20 packs for 3K gems or 15K gold, or a savings of 1,000 gems or 5,000 gold.

If you plan to buy Alchemy packs, the bundle is a no-brainer.

What would be the difference if you were to buy Standard packs?

The Alchemist Bundle gives you:

  • Around 20 rares & mythics from the specific Alchemy set (these come from the Alchemy packs) โ€“ these are not Standard-legal.
  • 12 rares & mythics from sets that are both legal in Standard and Alchemy (these come from the Golden Packs).
  • Around 4 rare/mythic wildcards from the wildcards track.
  • About 70% odds of finding other wildcards while opening the packs.

If you spend the same amount (15,000 gold) on the latest Standard set, you can buy 15 regular packs, and Golden Pack track progress equivalent to 1.5 Golden Packs. That translates to:

  • Around 15 rares & mythics from the regular set (these come from the regular packs), which are Standard-legal.
  • 9 rares & mythics from Standard- and Alchemy-legal sets (these come from the Golden Packs).
  • Around 3 rare/mythic wildcards from the wildcards track.
  • About 50% odds of finding another rare/mythic wildcard while opening the packs.

Therefore, if the cards from the Alchemy set are cards you want, this is an excellent deal. If you don't play formats with Alchemy cards, though, I'd say it's a bad deal โ€“ the extra wildcard and mythic/rares from the Golden Packs arenโ€™t enough to offset getting cards you won't play with.

Can You Buy the Alchemist Bundle Multiple Times?

No, you may buy only one Alchemist Bundle per set.

And why can't we buy it many times?

WotC hasnโ€™t stated officially why not, so my guess is that it is too good a rate for their economy, and would allow players with surplus gold to dump it into Alchemy packs for wildcard and vault progress.

Should You Buy the Alchemist Bundle?

Personally, my recommendation is โ€œnopeโ€ โ€“ spend all your gems drafting on Arena, I say!

But as noted, it depends on whether youโ€™re interested in the cards from that Alchemy set.

With a straight look at how many packs you get, the Alchemist Bundle is a great deal โ€“ you get a 25% discount on packs, which is huge. If you also like what those packs contain, it's a slam-dunk buy.

If you do not play formats that allow Alchemy cards, or if none of the cards seem strong, it's not a great deal.

I hope that's useful information on Arena's Alchemist Bundle! If you enjoy the pre-order pack bundles this Alchemy one is a sweet deal. However, I love drafting, so instead of spending 3,000 gems on packs, what would I buy? You already know the answer: more drafts! Maybe there's a crazy Chaos Draft to try, this amount of gems is good for two Premier Drafts and I can usually squeak out four wins to get six packs total and most of my gems back in one event. I get it though, sometimes you just want to reveal the rares and get your playsets.
