Okay, firebending isn't exactly a revelation for 100-card decks, but we're still a day away from official Avatar: The Last Airbender previews and we've already seen multiple firebending cards with infinite combo potential.

One of those is Fire Lord Zuko, which might be the least internally synergistic card aligned with the Fire Nation, but also has the greatest potential since you can slap it in the command zone as your infinite combo payoff.

Firebending Explained

Sure, you could just read the reminder text, or you could read the long, drawn out explanation of the reminder text. The key element to note about firebending is that the mana you make from the attack trigger only lasts until the end of combat. You can't carry it over into your second main phase and use it to cast creatures, sorceries, etc. So if you want to use Fire Lord Zuko effectively, or any firebending creature for that matter, you'll need some combination of instants or instant-speed abilities to sink that mana into before combat's over.

The awkward thing about Zuko is that it doesn't have a built-in way to use this mana, unlike nearly every other firebending card we've seen so far. Most designs look like Zuko, Exiled Prince, and have an outlet for their red mana that you can use if you've got nothing else to do with it.

Hellkite Charger

Flavor aside, โ€œfirebending Xโ€ is already primed for combos with Hellkite Charger, a card known for ending games alongside other repeat mana generators. Here, you need to get Zuko's power up to at least 7, attack with Zuko and Charger, filter your firebending mana into the dragonโ€˜s triggered ability, and rinse and repeat until the Fire Nation reigns supreme. It's not a simple A+B combo, since it requires some other means of growing Zuko, and requires that they can both attack freely without dying in combat, but you can bet nearly every Zuko deck that pops up will have a guest appearance by Hellkite Charger.

Sozin's Comet

For what it's worth, you can also pull these combos off with Sozin's Comet, which requires Charger and any other creature, and also results in infinite combats.

Blink and You'll Miss It

What makes Fire Lord Zuko so appealing as a combo commander is that you can ignore the firebending lines altogether and just focus on the second ability, which puts +1/+1 counters on your team whenever you cast from exile, or have a permanent enter from exile. I'm no Avatar historian, but I'm assuming this is here to represent Zuko working with Aang, hence the airbending synergy?

Even if you're playing fairly, casting from exile is common these days, and turning something like Wrenn's Resolve into a double team-wide buff is sort of crazy. Zuko also picks up counters, which increases its own firebending potential.

Comet Storm

This triggered ability also sets you up for some pretty easy infinites. All it takes is a combination of any two cards that can continuously blink one another, and you end up with as many +1/+1 counters on your creatures as you want. That also translates into an arbitrarily large firebending ability on Zuko, which you could sink into a game-winning Comet Storm or your fireball of choice.

For example, cast either Felidar Guardian or Restoration Angel, follow up with the other one, and they can blink each other ad infinitum. Zuko converts each creature returning from exile into +1/+1 counters for the board, and both blink creatures give you outs to stop the combo when you need to. Dualcaster Mage plus a blink spell like Cloudshift or Ephemerate do the trick as well. Cast one of those spells on any viable target, flash in Dualcaster while it's on the stack, copy the flicker spell and have it blink out Dualcaster, and rinse/repeat until satisfied.

If you want to keep things as close to the Avatar universe as possible, we've already covered some combos between Appa, Steadfast Guardian and Aang, Airbending Master that also result in infinite flicker loops, and both these cards slot into a Zuko deck just fine. Those combos require extra cost reduction pieces, but they're also generically playable and synergize with Zuko outside of their dedicated combos, too. This all leads to one synergistic Mardu shell full of Avatar cards that all live together in harmonyโ€ฆ until the Commander Brackets attack.

The cloud shift stuff seems neat, but it doesn’t work since Zuko says “cast.” That feels like a big miss here.

Zuko also triggers on permanents entering from exile, so Cloudshift & friends still work fine.
