As you may have heard if you pay attention to the Magic card market, Jin Sakai, Ghost of Tsushima is building a team.

He hired Fallen Shinobi last week, more than doubling the zombie ninjaโ€˜s price in the process. Two days ago he recruited Ashling Extinguisher, who must have driven a tough bargain because the price tripled in this case. And now Tsushima's Ghost is adding a demon to the party: Silent-Blade Oni, which happens to be the hardest haggler of them allโ€ฆ

โ€ฆ because it has spiked more than 280%.

Although that may also be because Jin Sakai, Ghost of Tsushima has competition. There's another brand new commander interested in adding Silent-Blade Oni to her teamโ€ฆ and she may end up being the most popular commander from Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Silent-Blade Oni Price Spike

If you've played with or against a ninja deck in Commander, this is a demon you know. It sees a lot of play in Yuriko, the Tiger's Shadow and Satoru Umezawa decks. It used to be a pretty expensive card a couple of years ago (going all the way up to $18 in early 2022), but reprints in Streets of New Capenna Commander and Outlaws of Thunder Junction Commander pushed the price into bulk-bin range.

Until about a month ago, when it started going up, and up, and up, from about $1 climbing to almost $3.80 for near-mint copies in the US market:

Supply is accommodating to demand, and at the moment you can find near-mint copies for less than the $3.80 spike (above all if you look for reprints from OTC and SNC, rather than the Commander 2018 original). But inventories are somewhat slim, so it's hard to guess where prices will go.

Of Ghosts and Fire

One reason for why Silent-Blade Oni is spiking is Jin Sakai, Ghost of Tsushima, who's proving to be the most popular new commander from the PlayStation Secret Lair.

In case you're not familiar with the Ghost of Tsushima videogame, Jin Sakai is a samurai who must choose to fight honorably, or employ the sort of dishonorable tactics that a ninja would use. That's reflected in Jin Sakai, Ghost of Tsushimaโ€˜s attack triggers: Standoff, and Ghost.

And, as it turns out, the ninja side is strong in Magic players, because Jin Sakai decks lean quite heavily into tricks that grant unblockable and saboteur triggered abilitiesโ€ฆ which is exactly what Silent-Blade Oni is all about.

Fire Lord Azula has quickly become the second most-popular commander from Avatar: The Last Airbender, and it may soon outpace Toph, the First Metalbender to become #1. Silent-Blade Oniโ€˜s playrate in Azula decks is quite lower than in Jin Sakai's decks, but still notable given that Fire Lord Azula was revealed just one week ago.

What Will Happen With Silent-Blade Oni's Price?

Being playable with two new, hot commanders has of course increased Silent-Blade Oniโ€˜s demand. And, as noted, this is a card that used to cost over $5 (and sometimes near $20) before reprints.

As of right now, it would seem that increased supply is pushing the prices down โ€“ but, on the other hand, Fire Lord Azula is not even out yet. If she indeed turns out to be Avatar's hottest commander, demand could spike again.

Just remember to do your own research if you're considering buying or selling Silent-Blade Oni!
