Hatsune Miku is a familiar figure to us Magic players by now, with multiple Secret Lairs that have brought the vocaloid sensation to slips of cardboard near you. She’s back in 2026, this time with a full Secret Lair Commander precon featuring Miku as a reskinned Trostani, Selesnya's Voice commander.

Like any precon, the deck needs work to become more than a rough gem, and I very much enjoy fixing precons. A few cards in, a few cards out, and you get a pretty cool deck with sweet exclusive art.

Trostani, Selesnya's Voice says lifegain and tokens, so that’s what the deck does. It’s a pretty straightforward list. You make tokens and gain life, and have cards to reward you for both.

The main weakness, not uncommon to precons, is a relative lack of power. It also leans a little too heavily into big swings of lifegain without the support pieces to make it effective. Then there are the classic weaknesses of too little removal and card draw. There’s nothing particularly exceptional but the 15 cards with new art.

Upgrade Plan

My upgrade plan is simple: Cut the lifegain chaff and home in on the tokens. I’m not cutting the lifegain theme altogether as there are cards worth running, but there’s lots of chaff, like weak payoffs (Ajani's Pridemate, anybody?) and 4+ mana cards that do nothing but gain life. I’m ditching those and lackluster token cards plus some random filler.

My inclusions hone the token theme, bringing in cards that make better tokens for Miku to populate, plus propping up the low removal/card draw sections. Oh, and lands. Thirty-four lands is criminal, and it’s a puzzling oversight because a proper land count is one of the few things precons consistently nail.

6 Lands

Suggested Cuts: Ajani's Pridemate, Angelic Chorus, Congregate, Boon Reflection, Invincible Hymn, Voice of the Blessed

Though this exchanges six cards, I’m counting it as one entry since it’s all lands. These six utility lands/modal double-faced cards are my picks, but even just basic lands are better than the starting land count:

The cuts are the worst lifegain cards. Weak payoffs and cards that don’t meaningfully advance your gameplan. Cards like Boon Reflection and Invincible Hymn and similar effects are pretty unplayable without black drain cards like Vito, Thorn of the Dusk Rose.

Audience with Trostani

Audience with Trostani

Suggested Cut: Song of Freyalise

Song of Freyalise is weak. You can have great turns, as long as you draw it with a well-stocked board. But that’s a tall ask, and it gives your opponent a timeline to know when they need to wipe your board.

Audience with Trostani can be risky on an empty board, but it still asks much less of you and has amazing potential as a draw spell; the ceiling’s very high.

Armanda Wurm

Armada Wurm

Suggested Cut: Silverquill Lecturer

Silverquill Lecturer could make good creatures to populate with Trostani, but the deck doesn’t have many great non-legendary creatures to demonstrate and I’m not adding many. Let’s just get Armada Wurm and its always good token. Three mana for another 5/5 each turn is pretty scary.

Belladonna Took

Belladonna Took

Suggested Cut: Bramble Sovereign

Bramble Sovereign has a similar flaw to Silverquill Lecturer: uninteresting creatures to copy. Belladonna Took reliably draws cards and meshes with both the token and lifegain themes.

Caretaker’s Talent

Caretaker's Talent

Suggested Cut: Growing Ranks

Growing Ranks turns tokens into a long-term card advantage engine, but it’s terribly slow. Four mana and you need to wait a turn cycle to get the first token, and if your board gets wiped, it does nothing until the turn after you rebuild. Caretaker's Talent costs less mana, does more things, and doesn’t die after a Sunfall because you can always make tokens next turn.

Cloud’s Limit Break

Cloud's Limit Break

Suggested Cut: Break Down

Precons love weak cards that “do the thing” at the cost of power and often efficiency. Case in point: Break Down makes a token, so we’re running it despite the cost being bad and the removal narrow. And it’s not even a creature token to populate! I’d rather have Cloud's Limit Break to interact with all my opponents at once and provide a board wipe in the worst-case scenario.

Break Down is one of the cards with new Miku art; if you want to preserve those, then cut Speaker of the Heavens instead.

Elspeth, Sun’s Champion

Elspeth, Sun's Champion

Suggested Cut: Song of the Worldsoul

Song of the Worldsoul has a better ceiling than Growing Ranks but is still criminally slow, so I want to ditch it for something better. This is another Miku card; cut Elenda's Hierophant to preserve the Mikus.

Elspeth, Sun's Champion churns out tokens at the same cost, but it comes with a board wipe. The deck doesn’t have many anthems so it’s often one-sided, or close to it. Should you be lucky enough to reach the ultimate, you can probably win from there.

Exemplar of Light

Exemplar of Light

Suggested Cut: Aetherflux Reservoir

Aetherflux Reservoir almost justifies stuff like Boon Reflection, but the deck would need a more dedicated tutor package to reliably find that one card. Exemplar of Light is a better lifegain payoff because it works with the trickles of life from Trostani and draws cards.

Ezuri’s Predation

Ezuri's Predation

Suggested Cut: Gruff Triplets

Gruff Triplets works well in decks that repeatedly trigger the enters ability, but this deck doesn’t do that. A better investment for that mana is Ezuri's Predation, which generally puts more bodies into play; larger bodies, even, and kills a bunch of stuff.

Freyalise, Llanowar’s Fury

Suggested Cut: Mirari's Wake

Mirari's Wake is just a nothing burger in 2026. Freyalise, Llanowar's Fury does so much more. It makes tokens and mana and destroys artifacts and enchantments (very important since I want Break Down gone), and it even draws cards. Bonus points for having a Miku print from a previous Secret Lair drop.

Haliya, Guided by Light

Haliya, Guided by Light

Suggested Cut: Rhys the Redeemed

I find Rhys the Redeemed awfully slow, though it goes over the top fairly well. Haliya, Guided by Light adds more lifegain as a Soul Sister variant with card draw attached, so it’s a more natural fit, even if it raises the curve slightly.

Rite of Harmony

Rite of Harmony

Suggested Cut: Storm Herd

Storm Herd can be an extremely big threat but the deck doesn’t ramp enough to rely on such an expensive card. Also, the deck’s not lacking for top-end. I'd rather go low to the ground with Rite of Harmony’s excellent card draw, which works well with the planeswalkers I’m adding because they produce more bodies for no mana.

Rampaging Baloths

Rampaging Baloths

Suggested Cut: Phyrexian Processor

I see the vision for Phyrexian Processor. You play it, pay a bunch of the life Commander gives you, then the tokens you make rebuy that life, plus you get big tokens to populate. I just balk at 8 mana invested for the first token, and the risk of paying 4 mana and 10 life to provide a Naturalize target.

Rampaging Baloths makes smaller tokens, but it makes them more consistently at a lower cost. It also gives the ramp spells something to do on turn 7.

Timeless Witness

Timeless Witness

Suggested Cut: Healing Technique

I don’t hate Healing Technique as a draw spell, but Timeless Witness also recurs two cards, isn’t restricted to permanents, and makes a token for Trostani and all the other synergies. It just works better in the deck.

Valkyrie Harbinger

Valkyrie Harbinger

Suggested Cut: Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger

Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger feels less like an intentional pick to improve the deck and more like an excuse to force a reprint. If you want to keep the Miku cards in, I have an alternative cut: Dazzling Theater // Prop Room.

Valkyrie Harbinger demonstrates how good top-end works in a deck: It’s a solid lifegain payoff that pumps out threatening tokens for Trostani to populate.

This Miku deck falls into many of the familiar pitfalls that Commander precons struggle with, but it’s nothing a little attention can’t buff out. The core of a good deck is there as long as you take the time to upgrade it.
