Smaug the Magnificient

The Saturday of Gen Con, the game store Journeyโ€™s End Games put out a $25,000 bounty for the gleaming gold Smaug the Magnificent, The Hobbitโ€™s headliner card. Itโ€™s not the only high-price bounty on the card either, with former NFL player Cassius Marsh putting a $20,000 bounty on Smaug back in June.

Gen Con attendees got to participate in a scavenger hunt put on by Wizards of the Coast where they tracked down a number of Hobbit door scattered throughout the convention; players who found 14 got a special tote bag stuffed with rewards, including a Tom, Bert, and William promo, three Draft Boosters from The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth, and boosters from The Hobbit: Three Play Boosters and one Collector Booster.

From these Collector Boosters, several gleaming gold Smaugs have been opened, with Ben Bateman confirming that Journeyโ€™s End Games purchased at least one, presumably for the bounty price, though the exact details of the transaction have not been disclosed. Journeyโ€™s End Gameโ€™s digital store has no listing for the card at time of writing.

What Is The Gleaming Gold Smaug?

The gleaming gold Smaug the Magnificent is The Hobbitโ€™s headliner card. Headliners are ultra-rare editions of cards from a set, exclusive to Collector Boosters: Marquee chase cards. While headliners are often serialized, as seen on Secrets of Strixhavenโ€™s Emeritus of Ideation or Innistrad Remasteredโ€™s Edgar Markov, Smaug is not serialized.

Per Wizardโ€™s Collecting The Hobbit article, there are approximately 500 prints of this card, which are mechanically identical to the main setโ€™s Smaug the Magnificent. While the card is not exclusive to English Collector Boosters, the card always appears in English.

In addition to the unique border and foil treatment, the headliner features art by renowned fantasy artist Ted Nasmith. Nasmith is known for his many, many paintings depicting scenes from J. R. R. Tolkienโ€™s work, including The Hobbit, all three The Lord of the Rings novels, and The Silmarillion. Nasmithโ€™s art ties the piece together, giving it a classical fantasy feel that Magic doesnโ€™t dabble in as often any more.

How Valuable Are Other Headliners?

With Smaug receiving such high bounties, itโ€™s worth considering what other headliners go for.

Starting with Emeritus of Ideation, eBay has numerous listings going for $3,000-4,000, with a notable exception: The 500/500 sold for over $13,000 due to its prestigious serialized number.

Edgar Markov has more volatility, with some cards going for as low as $2,300 and others scraping $5,000.

These prices may seem shockingly low compared to Smaugโ€™s $20,000+ bounties, but may I direct your attention towards the Marvel headliner cards, The Soul Stone (Marvelโ€™s Spider-Man) and The Mind Stone (Marvel Super Heroes)?

These two headliners, which are also not serialized, have one sold listing on eBay apiece, at $60,000 and $40,000, respectively. The tens of thousands is much more similar to Smaugโ€™s pricing. The higher value of these cards can be traced simply to increased demand for Universes Beyond properties.

A card like Emeritus of Ideation is primarily of interest to Magic: the Gathering collectors, for any number of reasons: A love of Strixhaven, a desire to catch all the headliners, collect serial cards, etc. But thatโ€™s a relatively small pool of people. Cards from Universes Beyond sets reach a much greater audience of collectors interested in expensive collectibles, even if they donโ€™t play the game.

Could Smaug the Magnificent reach that $40,000+ price point? That seems unlikely as I assume Marvel has a greater pull than The Hobbit, but weโ€™ll have to wait and see what the card goes for when high-end shops start selling it.
