We're getting our first major booster pack update since Play Boosters were introduced in 2024, and Collector Boosters will be receiving a bit of a make-over as well. According to an article by Wizards of the Coast, we can expect these changes to start taking place next year, and extend forward into 2028 and beyond. Even more exciting: Magic's bringing back the God Pack!
What Are God Packs?

Headlining all the other booster pack changes is the reintroduction of โGod Packsโ. These are super-rare booster packs that are curated to include only rares and mythics rares. The diagram above shows the contents of a Play Booster God Pack, which will appear at a rate of 1:1000 boosters. The Play Booster versions of these will contain the following:
- 1 God Pack celebration card
- 10 Non-foil rares/mythics
- 2 Non-foil Booster Fun rares/mythics
- 2 Traditional Foil Booster Fun rares/mythics
The โGod Pack celebration cardโ looks to be a random insert like a token/ad card, but maybe a bit more collectible.

Collector Booster God Packs will appear at a rate of 1:300 boosters. These use the new 12-card pack structure and contain the following:
- 1 God Pack Celebreation Card
- 1 Foil land
- 3 Foil normal rares/mythics
- 3 Non-Foil Booster Fun rares/mythics
- 5 Foil Booster Fun rares/mythics
God Packs have existed in Magic before, and were a rare part of the original Theros block. Journey into Nyx concluded the block, and introduced the last of the 15 gods in the Theros pantheon. To celebrate this, 1-in-1000 of these packs would be seeded as a โGod Packโ, containing all 15 mythic rare gods from the block. This new iteration doesn't take the โgodโ approach quite so literally.
Booster Pack Changes
Play Boosters
First and foremost, โPlay Boostersโ will simply have their name changed to โBooster Packsโ. They're already the standard booster for Magic, so the name is being simplified further. They're far enough divorced from their original purpose of combining Draft Boosters and Set Boosters that this change seems intuitive enough.
Next up: Foil commons and uncommons will no longer appear in these booster packs. You can still open foil rares or mythics, but the WotC article echoes the sentiment from players that nonrare foils are no longer exciting cards to open. The drop rate on foil rares has been increased to compensate the loss of a guaranteed foil in every pack.
Japan Showcase cards can now be opened in Play Boosters. These were exclusive to Collector Boosters before, but are now more widespread, and can appear in the wildcard slot of a Play Booster.
Collector Boosters
Collector Booster Packs will be recieving a minor change, mostly a downgrade: These packs will contain one less foil uncommon and two less commons. Those slots will not be replaced by anything else, so Collector Boosters are now smaller, but with less โfluffโ. There will still be a slot or two dedicated to foil non-rares, so they're not going away entirely.
This is a bit of a double-edged sword: Foil commons/uncommons were rarely exciting to open in Collector Boosters, but now that these foils don't appear in Play Boosters, they're likely more desireable for people who really want them, and yet they're now locked behind premium packs. That means foil versions might actually increase in price, and will become harder to find, though you won't be able to get them in standard Play Boosters anymore. Lower-rarity foils become special again, but are harder to obtain.
When Do These Changes Take Place?

The booster pack update will take effect starting in 2027 with the release of Nauctis: The Sunken Realm. The new pack structure will only affect Multiverse Sets next year, and will start affecting Universes Beyond sets in 2028. That means Star Trek and any Universes Beyond sets in 2027 will not be affected by these booster pack changes. Don't go chasing a God Pack for Star Trek, folks!
