MTG Weekly Price Spikes: 7/18 – 7/24

This week’s price spikes come from a variety of sources. There’s a Modern influence, plus lots of hype surrounding the upcoming The Hobbit set, with a few cards driven by its mechanics and revealed commanders.

There’s also something that appears to be a spec for players who are seeing into the future…one might say galaxies away.

Dwarven Recruiter

Last week, we reported on Dwarven Recruiter’s price steadily climbing as Mark Rosewater confirmed The Hobbit would contain typal support for dwarves. The card has continue to climb, gaining 74% this week and a 277% spike over the past month.

That said, we’re still only in spoiler season and haven’t seen the entire set. There’s always the chance it gets a reprint, or that the hype dies: The only significant dwarf support card revealed thus far is Thorin, King of Durin's Folk from the scene cards, so HOB might not usher in the dwarf renaissance players desire.

Disrupting Shoal

Pro Tour Marvel Super Heroes put the spotlight on Modern during MagicCon Amsterdam, and we’re seeing the format drive a price spike for Disrupting Shoal, a classy blue counterspell enjoying a 120% climb towards its highest price.

It primarily sees play in Mono-Blue Belcher, also called Landless Belcher, a combo deck that exploits modal double-faced lands to enable Goblin Charbelcher. Because the deck runs so many spells with diverse mana costs, it often has the right spell to pitch to Shoal and protect the combo with free countermagic. In addition to Belcher, there’s cEDH demand from a variety of decks.

Wound Reflection

The Shadowmoor print of Wound Reflection has enjoyed a major price spike of 165% this week and 229% over the past past month, driving the price to an all-time high of $75 from a start of roughly $15.

It’s important to note that this spike is entirely contained to the Shadowmoor printing, with the Double Masters and Doctor Who printings remaining stable around $15, so this price spike probably has more to do with speculation on a a scarce, older printing of a card. This might be connected to The Hobbit because of a unique commander: The Mayor of Lake-town, a mono-black mill commander that punishes your opponents for losing life:

Cyberman Patrol

A dorky uncommon from Doctor Who has enjoyed a price spike as Cyberman Patrol has seen its price rise 85% over the last week. This price is reflected across all printings, with the showcase spiking 152% and the surge foil printing increasing by 330% this week.

The most likely cause for this spec is the upcoming Star Trek set. WeeklyMTG unveiled a first look at Star Trekon July 14, which prominently featured the Borg, who will be represented as artifact creatures with “silver-like” abilities. Cyberman Patrol was already one of the best artifact creature support cards; its stock can only rise with increased support. It’s also worth considering that the Patrol, like all Universes Beyond cards, is likely hard for Wizards to reprint in the future.
