Are you still rocking some old playmat you won at a Magic event? Does it have various stains, fraying edges, and an image you’re tired of looking at? As someone who just grabbed some new playmats, I can tell you that, although we already spend a lot of money on this pastime, an influx of new art to sit in front of you while you play is quite the creative jolt to elevate the experience.
And although there are many great playmat sources out there, Ultra PRO has a huge variety and has an easy to navigate website. If that’s your destination, let me help you with a ranking of the coolest playmats.
I’ve focused on the stock currently in print in case you want to shop in another tab.
What Are Ultra PRO Playmats in MTG?
Ultra PRO playmats are an indispensable tool for Magic players. Ultra PRO is known for various MTG and TCG accessories, including sleeves, deck boxes, and playmats. A playmat is something we didn’t use in the beginning of Magic (but we also didn’t sleeve our cards then!) Whether it keeps clear what cards are yours in a crowded convention or tournament environment, keep your cards safe from a patina of accumulated Cheetos dust at your LGS, or avoid the cat fur on the kitchen table! Standard sized mats are 24in x 13.5in, and Ultra PRO specializes in original Magic artwork from actual cards.
Searches with Ultra PRO often heavily favor recent sets, and you can browse through all the sold out playmats on their website, including so many great pieces from all throughout Magic. Don't get too worked up if your favorite isn't ranked here. If you’re still debating, browse a bit and see what inspires you.
#17. Poké Ball
j/k.
But if you really wanna tilt some Magic players on Commander night….
#16. Virtue of Courage
If you’re going to be the person who tries to make fetch, I mean burn, happen in EDH with either Ojer Axonil, Deepest Might or Imodane, the Pyrohammer, you deserve a playmat which dramatizes your struggle! This mat, with Pitor Dura’s sick art is just waiting for you to start across the lake of fire!
#15. Nuka-Cola

I really try not to wear advertisements, but for a fictional product, I make exceptions. Maybe I just have an affinity for metal signs as decor, and one cool thing about this is, over time, any weathering on this Fallout playmat looks completely on brand.
#14. MH3 Flipwalkers Double-Sided Collage

I may not be the biggest planeswalker fan, but I love the flow and poses of these Modern Horizons 3 creatures that transform into planeswalkers. It kind of breaks the fourth wall and helps the game come alive. Watch people's expression when you transform the playmat for game 2.
#13. Flare of Denial

You get the atmosphere of everything coming to a standstill and you get a sense of calm so you can operate. Send up your Flare of Denial when you need to finish enacting your plans.
#12. Fallout Tarmogoyf

The Fallout skinned card is Scrounging Deathclaw / Tarmogoyf, and I can't help but want to emulate this swagger walking into my LGS.
#11. FINAL FANTASY Tonberry

There's something endearing and hilarious about Tonberry and just how deadly it is.
#10. Selvala, Heart of the Wilds

Sometimes you need to get in touch with your primal instincts and stay connected with your pack. Selvala, Heart of the Wilds leads by example.
#9. FINAL FANTASY Chocobo Holofoil

Chocobos exude the joy and colors that I want throughout my Magic experience. This one has the huge plus of putting shiny foil on your playmat to put bling on your board, no matter which cards you play.
#8. Trostani, Three Whispers

Sure the art sends off calm vibes, those in the know do not underestimate Trostani, Three Whispers.
#7. Rakdos, Lord of Riots

Who needs green to get gigantic characters? Rakdos, Lord of Riots is ready to grab every player's attention and never let it go. Look at that massive swing of destruction.
#6. Teysa Karlov

It's so hard to go wrong choosing Teysa Karlov for your token deck. It's good to remind players every once in a while that tokens rule, and Teysa expression knows there's little you can do about it.
#5. Niv-Mizzet, Guildpact

Niv-Mizzet, Guildpact literally has the guilds wrapped up in its control. Gaze in awe of the avatar dragon and let your cards fill in with vibrant colors
#4. Sythis, Harvest's Hand

Sythis, Harvest's Hand sets a fast pace for enchantment decks. Opponents will barely see the starry details on the garments Sythis wears. Make them see stars with the numerous enchantments you play.
#3. Orvar, the All-Form

Orvar, the All-Form leaves muted space on your playmat for all the fun copies you'll make. Like a canvas, primed for painting, show your opponents how creative you can get with your spells.
#2. Uthros, Titanic Godcore

Uthros, Titanic Godcore celebrates the space around a stormy planet. Could you storm off on this playmat? I wouldn't have it any other way.
#1. Yoshimaru, Ever Faithful

Steadfast, patience and stillness. Yoshimaru, Ever Faithful is a testament to loyalty and inspires me to stay focused on the one thing I care about most. Stay faithful my friends.
Wrap Up

There are plenty more great playmats to choose from, especially if you don’t mind crossing your IPs here and there.
And if you don’t already have a playmat, seriously consider it. Before I started using them, I would often discover otherwise invisible bits of condensation on the table regularly enough to annoy. Sure, if you’re double-sleeved your cards are still safe, but you want clean shuffling and ease in picking up your cards!
What’s your favorite playmat? Do you have some old, threadbare thing you still use after all these years? Or did you just pick up a new beauty? Let us know in the comments or on Draftsim's Discord! Happy gaming!
