Collector Boosters from Universes Beyond products this year have been on a rollercoaster of record highs and huge drops.

First, Final Fantasy proved that a massively popular crossover could spark a frenzy of Fear of Missing Out, with Collector Booster boxes selling for three times their MSRP at pre-release.

Then, Final Fantasy‘s record seemed to have become the new normal, as both Spider-Man and Avatar: The Last Airbender Collector Booster boxes nearly matched FIN's numbers… on day one! But as players learned more about SPM, the hype cooled down massively, so did Spidey's prices, also dragging Avatar with them. It seemed that Final Fantasy had indeed been a one-of-a-kind outlier, and that the Universes Beyond bubble had popped…

… until a bunch of teenageers from New York said, “Hold my beer pizza!”, and here we go again: As we write this, Collector Booster boxes for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are being resold for $999.99.

Two weeks ago, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles went on sale on Amazon, with most products priced at WotC's suggested retail prices as per their Collecting Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles article:

WotC doesn't list an MSRP for Collector Booster boxes specifically, but they suggest $37.99 per individual collector booster. Since each box comes with 12 collector boosters, that amounts to around $456 per box… and both prices (per individual collector booster, and per box) were exactly what Amazon was selling them for.

Exceedingly speedy buyers wasted no time picking the collector boxes clean, and they were gone in less than five minutes.

And now they have shown up in online resellers like TCGplayer, but at more than twice their MSRP. At the time of writing, available listings sit around $1000, and there have already been a couple of trades at around triple the Amazon price:

What's a bit surprising is that this renewed frenzy comes three weeks after the Spider‑Man Universes Beyond crossover flopped quite badly, with even WotC hinting as much in their surveys. Spidey CBBs spiked near $960 in late August (following Final Fantasy's craze) but as more and more SPM cards were revealed the hype cooled off, and by mid September SPM Collector Booster boxes had plunged by 30%. And, after release, they’ve been trading for around $400-$450.

Avatar’s collector boxes opened presales around the $1,000 mark back in August, with a few early sales spiking as high as $1,500… but by last week, dragged down by SPM's drop, you could get Avatar Collector boxes for less than $600.

In other words, both Spider‑Man and Avatar taught us that not every crossover will sustain Final-Fantasy-level prices.

That's why it's a bit surprising that Magic's next visit to New York City opens at Final Fantasy prices, rather than Spider-Man's or Avatar's.

In fact, it took FIN quite some time to reach past the $1K lineit was pretty big news when it went over $700, and only broke past $1200 after release. Our teenage New Yorkers are already trading in that upper tier.

Why Such a High Opening for TMNT?

Final Fantasy shattered a ton of records, including collector displays surging past $1,000 and staying there: As of this month, Final Fantasy CBBs are still well above $1,200 on the secondary market.

So the big question is: Will TMNT be another Final Fantasy? Or will it follow Spider‑Man’s downfall, dropping back to earth once the cowabunga wears off?

Short answer: nobody knows.

Had you asked me last week, my guess (after our usual caveat that this is not investment advice, folks!) would have been, “No way that Turtles match Cloud & Co. Final Fantasy was clearly a one-of-a-kind. At best, TMNT collector boxes will pre-sell for what Avatar is pre-sellling right now, and at worst they'll have Spidey prices.” TMNT is objectively much closer to SPM than FIN when you look at the product itself: A small set with only one Commander precon.

But now it looks like we're still in uncharted territory with these $1K Magic boxes. Only time will tell if the Turtles are more like Clouds, or more like Spiders.
