Final Fantasy Collector Boosters seem to have jumped the shark as far as their current prices, with a good chunk of Magic players going from โ€œSHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!!โ€ to โ€œMeh; I think I'm gonna pass this set,โ€ these last few days.

Both in his tweet and a detailed let's-crack-packs video on YouTube, well-known MTG content creator SaffronOlive stresses that, in his opinion, โ€œFinal Fantasy is a great set,โ€ but Collector Boosters are way overpriced at their current price point.

โ€œOutside of literally cracking a serialized Golden Chocobo,โ€ Saffron writes, โ€œI'm not sure how you really come out ahead opening collector boxes at these prices.โ€

Losing 30%

On a YouTube video on the โ€œMTGGoldfish Unboxingsโ€ channel, Saffron Olive cracks open five Collector Booster Boxes, which cost around $700-$750 each (so about $3500 in total).

Then he calculates the value of the cards he gets, using roughly 50% of the current pre-sale value, given how inflated those pre-sale values are. โ€œThis is the most painful and the worst box opening that I've ever had,โ€ Saffron says after estimating a loss of about $1200. โ€œWe got just, like, absolutely wrecked.โ€

Saffron's conclusion?

โ€œThe most expensive boxes we've ever opened,โ€ he says to wrap up the video. โ€œThere's really only one takeaway from this, and that takeaway is prices of Final Fantasy sealed product, and specifically Final Fantasy collector booster boxes, are just way too high to be opening right now.โ€

As a comparison about price points, consider that you can get all four of the Final Fantasy Commander precons for around $400 at the time of writing โ€“ so you could but all four Precons, and a couple of Play Booster Boxes, and spend roughly the same as just one single Collector Booster box.

Saffron's viewers largely agree that Final Fantasy Collector Boosters are priced way too high.

โ€œThis was very therapeutic to watch,โ€ says @nickfranco865 in one of the comments. โ€œIt completely removed what little FOMO I had for not shelling out for a Collector box.โ€

The sentiment extends to Magic players commenting on other MTG creators' videos.

โ€œThe set seems really well designedโ€, says @NebulaRed2493 commenting on CovertGoBlue's pack-cracking video, โ€œwhich makes it suck even more that the sealed product is so absurdly overpriced.โ€

And player frustration extends to Reddit.

โ€œI'll be skipping this one,โ€ says u/Normal_Pangolin_372 in the most-upvoted comment on a thread discussing whether or not to buy sealed Final Fantasy product. โ€œGonna pick up a few singles and call it a day.โ€

โ€œSame here,โ€ says u/No-Pilot-1252. โ€œWas going to buy 2 play booster boxes and 2 collector boxes plus all the precons. Then the prices went to the moon and now I'm buying none.โ€

The majority of replies agree, noting they'll just go to a prerelease and thatโ€™s it, to others that will simply just skip Final Fantasy and wait for Edge of Eternities

Why Are Final Fantasy Collector Boosters So Expensive?

There's two reasons why Final Fantasy Collector Boosters are so expensive.

The first one is, simply put: Final Fantasy. It's already the best-selling Magic set of all time, and no matter how many players complain about the prices, and how loudly they complain, pretty much any Final Fantasy product gets sold the moment they go on sale.

The other is that Collector Boosters are a single-print run.

โ€œAt least officially, collector boxes are never reprinted,โ€ explains u/bjlinden. โ€œThere have been times that Wizards has sat on unsold inventory sitting in a warehouse somewhere to trickle onto the market later, or unsold stock that they tried to sell direct on Amazon gets fire sold, but unless Wizards is lying to us, they have never actually done a second print run of collector boosters.โ€

Sometimes Magic products do get released in waves; but as far as we know, Final Fantasy Collector Boosters will never be reprinted. WotC may have a โ€œDeluxe Editionโ€ up their sleeve, like they did with Lord of the Rings, but that would be a different product.

In other words: This is the only chance to catch a serialized chocobo in the wilds.

But, at 700-plus bucks per shot, it may be too expensive a bird to catch.

โ€œI don't think this means that this Final Fantasy is bad,โ€ says Saffron in his video. And on twitter he posts that he's already brewed around 50 FF decks, noting that he finds the set very interesting. โ€œI actually really enjoyed opening the boxes, but you just can't do it for $700 a piece.โ€
