We are still three months away from Avatar: The Last Airbenderโ€˜s release (not to mention a whole other Universes Beyond set: Spider-Man!), but some of Avatar's most popular commanders are already bending the Magic card market.

This week, the hot new toy is a very old, little-played white enchantment, Terra Eternal, with a very simple effect: It makes every land indestructible.

Terra Eternal

And with an upcoming MTG set which has land animation as one of its main focus, Terra Eternalโ€˜s price has gone through the roof.

With a single printing from Worldwake (the second set in the Zendikar block, which launched more than fifteen years ago), Terra Eternal is a white enchantment that has never seen much play, be it casually or competitive, except a bit of excitement five years ago when its price went up to about $2. But that hype soon died, and Terra Eternal has been a fifty-cents rare for years.

But that changed last week, when prices for mint copies went up by 300% in US markets, and nowadays there are not listed copies on TCGplayer $6:

Terra Eternal has absolutely no competitive pedigree, either in cEDH or 60-card Magic formats. And in casual Commander tables it's only played with very niche commanders like Noyan Dar, Roil Shaperโ€ฆ

โ€ฆ but Avatar: The Last Airbender may be able to change that, and breath bend new life into Terra Eternal thanks to Toph, the First Metalbender:

Toph, the First Metalbender

At least this early on, Toph, the First Metalbender is the most popular commander from Avatar: The Last Airbender, and by a good margin. Fire Lord Zuko and Avatar Aang are second and third, but a long way behind Toph according to EDHREC.

Toph, the First Metalbender turns all your nontoken artifacts into lands. And about 33% of early builds with Toph in the command zone include a copy of Terra Eternal.

But, how good is the synergy between Toph and Terra?

Toph's Terra

โ€œI'm not really seeing the synergy with Toph since Earthbending will bring them back anyway and you're missing out on ETB triggers,โ€ writes u/Similar-West5208 about the redundancy of using Terra Eternal in a Toph deck. Earthbending already gives your earthbended land protection, since if it dies or is exiled, it will return to your battlefield.

And, as u/Similar-West5208 notes, you may actually want your artifact-turned-land to die and come back, rather than be indestructible, since those artifacts may have good ETB triggers.

But what if earthbending is just a little bonus you don't care too much about, and what you care for is protecting your artifacts (rather than animating them)?

โ€œI think the earthbending part is irrelevant when considering this card,โ€ counters u/Garytaco. โ€œEvery one of your nontoken artifacts will gain indestructible, whether they are earthbent or not.โ€

In other words, you may not be too interested in giving indestructible to your earthbended lands โ€“ but rather make every nontoken artifact on your board Abrade-proof (since Toph makes them all into lands as long as she's on the board, and in turn Terra Eternal makes them indestructible).

โ€œTerra Eternal seems like a hit if you're going for the โ€˜Artifacts are lands' part of Toph, rather than the โ€˜lands are creatures, and come back if dead/exiled' part,โ€ notes u/SanityIsOptional. โ€œThe latter is where a lot of people are focusing, but honestly the former seems to me to be quite a strong ability, and one that is static, rather than end-of-turn trigger one permanent at a time.โ€

At any rate, at least a third of brewers and theorycrafters on EDHREC seem to think the Toph-Terra synergy is worth exploring.

What Will Happen With Terra Eternal's Price?

With our usual caveat that this is not investment advice (always do your own research, folks!), there seems to be a combination of four factors driving the price up.

First, there seems to be organic demand: As noted, Toph's currently TLA's most popular commander (by far), and a third of her early brews play Terra Eternal.

There's also a lot of speculation going on here, though, as openly noted in the MTG financial community โ€“ there's no actual consensus about whether or not Terra Eternal is a good card to play with Toph, the First Metalbender, but speculators that believe so have already hoarded tends of copies.

There's probably some speculation about Terra Eternal being generally good in a Magic set that will focus on animating lands in general. Land destruction is usually frowned upon in casual Commander tables, but if TLA has enough good earthbenders, land destruction may become more common and therefore land protection more desirable.

Last but not least, Terra Eternal is the textbook case of a very โ€œrareโ€ rare, so to speak: It has a single printing in Worldwake, and since it's been confirmed that Avatar won't have Commander precons (and with a good chunk of both TLA and TLE having been revealed), the risk of reprint is on the low end.
