Reality Fracture Story Ends with Death of Nearly 20 Year Old Planeswalker Character

Yesterday’s double chapter release concluded Reality Fracture’s story and killed off Jace Beleren, a member of the Lorwyn five and a prominent figure in the Magic lore for the past 20-odd years. Here’s everything you need to know about what happened in Reality Fracture, and if we can expect Jace to return.

Reality Fracture Story Recap

Reality Fracture picks up directly after the events of Secrets of Strixhaven, with a brief summary of Tam’s history with Jace and Tam struggling with betraying her friends back on Strixhaven to kidnap Jadzi. It gives us our first glimpse of Hexhaven, and reveals that this story’s Jace isn’t the Jace we’re familiar with.

The implosion of the Meditation Realm in Tarkir: Dragonstorm didn’t kill Jace as he rebuilt himself, but it fractured his mind into fragments. The Theorist, Jace Beleren, the mastermind of the Echoverse, represents Jace’s logic and reigns because he culled the other aspects of his personality, which he called aberrations. As Tam begins questioning Jace’s plans to overwrite the Multiverse with the Echoverse, he sends her to Innistrad, where she communes with Emrakul, who finds the gorgon curious, and begins developing a sense of self, even rebelling against the Theorist.

Meanwhile, Chandra and Ajani come to Vraska for help defeating Jace, and she sends them to recruit Garruk, because he can’t be tricked by Jace’s illusions (apparently Jace never gets the smells right). They invade the Echoverse and are thoroughly routed; without Jace’s compassion, he has no qualms about using his telepathic magics to overwhelm, paralyze, and damage his friends, stripping language from Ajani, preventing Chandra from making decisions, etc.

Tam tells Vraska about Jace’s aberrations before going to free Liliana from the dungeons. Following an attack by the doppelgangers like Chandra, Chill of Compliance, Vraska’s team is driven into the memory-prisons at the base of the tower, where they encounter the Detective, one of the aberrations, who reveals a plan: They (the culled Jaces) will guide Vraska and company through the memory-prisons and take shelter in their minds, so that the aberrations can overwhelm the Theorist and kill him to unravel the Echoverse. As they travel, Vraska gets separated from Chandra, Garruk, and Ajani, giving her a chance to reflect on her past as well as her love of Jace.

Meanwhile, The Theorist prepares to kill Jadzi, a task he’s balked from before; he needs to see her mind travel back to the creation of Acarvios so he can understand how two planes became one, and use that to Overwrite the Multiverse with the Echoverse. But he’s lost the parts of himself with the conviction to do so, and Jadzi takes up the knife herself, and Jace finds the omnipotence he sought.

The Theorist begins to overwrite the Multiverse, and repels an attack from Chandra and friends, sending them to fight their doppelgangers. Liliana, freed by Tam, comes to confront him; then Vraska saves Chandra and the others, and the aberrations enact their plan. Vraska stabs The Theorist to give him a swift death, less painful than if the aberrations tore themselves apart, and they come together, so he spends his final moments as Jace Beleren, again.

But the Multiverse is still being overwritten by the Echoverse; luckily, like any good blue mage, Jace still had a plan. He bequeathed his spark to Tam, making her a planeswalker and greatly increasing her psychic powers, so much so that she was able to call on Emrakul in Innistrad and offer the Echoverse as a feast. The Eldrazi agrees, and Hexhaven and its not-people are consumed. The story ends some time later, on Vryn, when Tam comes to meet Vraska and Loot.

Is Jace Actually Dead?

It wouldn’t be the first time the mind mage faked his death or tucked a little parcel of his mind somewhere to survive something lethal. It’s also important to point out that it’s hard to give a definitive answer to a question like this; as long as the Magic lore is ongoing, the story team can do whatever they want.

But this seems like a fairly convincing death for Jace, primarily because of Tam’s storyline. She spends the entire story seeking wholeness and finds it when she inherits Jace’s spark, and just having Jace overwrite her would be a waste of that story and also go against the characterization of Jace at the end of the story. That said, it’s not impossible.

The story repeatedly emphasized that Jace’s body must die to unravel his spell. Whether that was to reassure the audience that Tam would face no repercussions for inheriting his spark or to leave the door open to some mind mage shenanigans is unclear. At the very least, we can expect Jace to be retired from the story from some time unless recalled in memory, which is very likely to happen—there are loose ends regarding Loot and Helga’s prophecy, after all.
