Magic: The Gathering Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles launched worldwide last week. There are tons of cool combos in the latest Universes Beyond set, and today we're highlighting one of the most painful ones.

The start of the show is Raphael, Ninja Destroyer, who can turn a little bit of damage into a whole lot of mana with the right backup.

Today's combo uses three key cards: Raphael, Ninja Destroyer, Blazing Sunsteel, and a source of indestructible like Heroic Intervention, Boros Charm, or Mithril Coat; we'll use the latter in our example.

Raphael, Ninja Destroyer

Raphael, Ninja Destroyer must be blocked if able, and his Enrage ability gives you red mana equal to the damage dealt. If he gets blocked by a 1/1 he'll deal 1 damage; if he gets Shocked he'll deal 2 in return, etc.

He also lets you keep that mana until the end of turn instead of losing it as steps and phases end, which will be our end goal: infinite mana that will last for the whole turn!

Blazing Sunsteel

Second, Blazing Sunsteel gives the equipped creature +1/+0 and says that whenever that creature is dealt damage, it deals that much damage to any target.

Mithril Coat

Third, we need a way to make Raphael indestructibleโ€ฆ ideally at instant speed, so we'll use Mithril Coat.

The first few steps are pretty simple: You need Raphael, Ninja Destroyer on the battlefield with Blazing Sunsteel attached to him.

Then you need a way for Raphael to take damage. The easiest way is combat, because Raphael must be blocked if able, so an opponentโ€™s blocker can start the chain for you. Any spell or ability that deals damage to Raphael can do the job, as long as he survives it.

After blockers are declared, but ideally before combat damage, cast Mithril Coat. You could wait after combat damage is dealt if you're sure Raphael will survive the hit.

Once combat damage happens and Raphael takes even 1 damage, two abilities trigger.

  • Raphaelโ€™s Enrage ability gives you 1 red mana, and
  • Blazing Sunsteel lets Raphael deal 1 damage to any target.

Now, use the Sunsteel trigger to have Raphael deal that 1 damage to himself. Because heโ€™s indestructible, he stays aliveโ€ฆ but since he was dealt damage again, his Enrage triggers again, giving you another red mana, and Blazing Sunsteel triggers again too.

Then you point that new damage at Raphael again, and repeat the process as many times as you want.

One blocked attack can turn into infinite red mana for the turn. And because Blazing Sunsteel says Raphael deals damage to any target, you do not have to keep pointing every trigger at Raphael forever. Once you have as much mana as you want, you can stop the combo by targeting the damage at an opposing creature, planeswalker, or player instead.

What do we do with infinite mana in red? Well, folks, I'm here to let you know that you've got several powerful options:

You could just hit the whole for โˆž damage with Jaya's Immolating Inferno, or you could go the classic combo player route and cast an infinitely large Walking Ballista, or you could go with some insane jankness and create infinite copies of something on your board, Weftstalker Ardent, perhaps?

Wrap Up

An even punchier version of this combo, which you can also play since it's also in red, is Brash Taunter instead of Raphael.

Brash Taunter

In Brash Taunterโ€˜s case, it already has indestructible. You still need a way to deal damage to the Taunter to start the combo going (and, unlike Raphael, if you attack the Taunter your opponent doesn't have to block it), bust since there are two different sources of damage here (the Taunter, and the Blazing Sunsteel), you can deal infinite damage and take out the whole table.ย
