Flourishing Defenses (Shadowmoor) - art by Dan Scott

It's been quite the hectic week in the Magic card market!

For starters,Izzet Lessons showed it's the best deck in Standard at the Magic Worlds Championship, with the finals being an Izzet Lessons mirror.

But the biggest movers came completely from left field: This week we had huge reveals from not just one, but two different upcoming setsโ€ฆ and both sent old cards through the sky.

Flourishing Defenses โ€“ 4500%

Alright, this one is just silly, but that's what new, great support for a somewhat niche Commander strategy can do.

Flourishing Defenses

[card]Flourishing Defenses[/card] is a green enchantment with a single printing back in the original Shadowmoor. You MAY never heard of it because it sees very little play, and when it does it's with Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons.ย

But Flourishing Defenses just went up from fifty cents to well over twenty bucks, and it did so in a single day.

This is all thanks to High Perfect Morcant, revealed on December 11th.

โ€œLorwyn Eclipsed is already hyped up into oblivion, and each new preview that trickles in adds fuel to the fire,โ€ wrote Tim yesterday in our preview piece. โ€œJust look at High Perfect Morcant! How many buzz words can you fit on one card? We've got a new elf commander, proliferate commander, -1/-1 counter commander, and a new Lorwyn mechanic all wrapped up in one card.โ€

And Morcant is not alone: There's a whole Commander precon, โ€œBlight Course,โ€ themed around it!

So there you go: Just when 2025 was about to wrap up, a in-Universe set shows up to teach those Universes Beyond wannabes what a real price spike looks like.

Caltrops SMASH โ€“ 390%

Caltrops is actually down by a lot in the last couple of days, having dropped about 50% since Wednesdayโ€ฆ

Caltrops

โ€ฆ but that's after seeing its price go up tenfold for a similar reason to Flourishing Defenses: In this case, as we reported earlier this week, thanks to two-card infinite attack combo you can pull off with Caltrops and the newly revealed The Incredible Hulk from Marvel Super Heroes.

All in all, Caltrops is up by about 390% since last week. It's clearly on the downswing after the initial hype, but looks like it will end up higher than it was seven days ago.

Accumulate Wisdom โ€“ 320%

Alright, time to shift from Commander reveal hype to the cream of the crop of competitive Standard.

Izzet Lessons was the breakout deck at the Magic World Championship last weekend. Four decks in the Top 8, including both finalists, packed a full playset of main-deck Accumulate Wisdoms, one of the new Lessons from Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Accumulate Wisdom

Accumulate Wisdom basically showed up a bit late to last week's prices-go-up party, when Boomerang Basics, The Legend of Kuruk and Stormchaser's Talent (all cards seeing play at Worlds) all went up.

It took Izzet Lessons to show everybody that it was the best deck at Worlds for Accumulate Wisdom to go up, as seen in its price spiking on Sunday.

As an uncommon from the latest set, Accumulate Wisdom is in abundant supply and the price has gone down from its $4.25 peak a few days ago, but it's still 320% up from the $0.80 it cost last Friday.

Monument to Endurance and Artist's Talent โ€“ 150%

Aetherdriftโ€˜s Monument to Endurance is another of Izzet Lesson's pillars, with both finalists at Worlds including a full playset.

Monument to Endurance

But Monument to Enduranceโ€˜s price trajectory is quite different. For starters, it was already a pretty expensive card, sitting at around $10 before Worlds. It's a staple in Greasefang Parhelion decks in Pioneer, sees a lot of play in Duel Commander, and fits with quite a few cEDH commanders.

Since Worlds, it has more than doubled in price โ€“ and has plateaued there, suggesting $18-$20 may be Monument to Enduranceโ€˜s new price point.

Bloomburrowโ€˜s Artist's Talent tells a similar story.

]Artist's Talent

Artist's Talent is a centerpiece of both Worlds finalists that was already very good in other MTG formats (in this case in Ruby Storm Modern decks, and Arclight Phoenix Pioneer decks) and priced around $9-$10 last week, that went through a massive spike post-Worlds and is now settling at around $18-$20 according to the latest listings on TCGplayer.
