The Soul Stone, the chase card from the latest MTG set, has been climbing to astronomic prices for its rarest version, the cosmic foil The Soul Stone

Seven days ago, there were reports that Spider-Man‘s The Soul Stone was sold on ebay for more than $10,000…

but that seems to have been pocket change for this card. A few days later, two other copies were sold for 50% (at around $15,000); now several Magic online vendors list it between 30% and 100% more expensive than that, with the most expensive listing reaching $33,000 according to MTGStocks

A Tale of Three Stones

The main version of The Soul Stone, featuring Volkan Baga's artwork, costs about $66 at the time of writing, making it the most expensive card you can play in Standard when considering regular versions. This is the only The Soul Stone version that you can open in Play Boosters

The borderless version, Illustrated by Leinil Francis Yu & Sunny Gho and showing Thanos, goes for about $2,100 right now.

And finally, the cosmic foil textless version of The Soul Stone, illustrated by Madeline Boni, is the set's headliner card. From recent sales, it can can go for anywhere between $15,000 and $30,000… or even more if the card is graded.

To make things more blurry, Wizards of the Coast has not disclosed the drop rate for the textless version. All we know is that it's “Available only in Collector Boosters in extremely low quantities,” according to the official Collecting Marvel's Spider-Man article, while Thanos' borderless version's drop rate is less than 1%.

Rising Prices?

Now, a pretty big caveat: It's pretty hard to talk about a trend with a card as rare, as expensive, and as new as The Soul Stone‘s cosmic foil version.

Having said that, the best guess is that it's indeed going up, and by quite a lot at that.

Seven days ago, redditors from the MTG financial subreddit reported a copy traded on ebay for $10,500, with some replies reporting even higher prices (in the $15K range), and many other replies predicting (correctly, as we'll see in a bit) that the price would be even higher.

Four days ago, IGNdeal's account on Instagram reported two cosmic foil copies selling, again on ebay, for $15,000.

icv2 reported an ebay sale at $19,500 on Sept 25.

Although out of stock, Card Kingdom lists the card $17K, giving further support to these prices; something similar happens with Card City Game, listing it at $20K but also out of stock:

But here's the plot twist: Yesterday, Sunday the 28th, a cosmic foil copy of The Soul Stone was traded for a whopping $32,999 on TCGplayer:

As of right now, TCGplayer is out of stock so it's really hard to say whether these prices are going up or down – but the few data points we do have put The Soul Stone‘s price much closer to $20K than $10K, and perhaps even above that.

Last but not least, the only available copy that we could find is a graded copy on ebay. With a 9.5 by Beckett Grading Services (BGS) (one of the best card grading services in the market), this graded cosmic foil copy of The Soul Stone is listed at… $60,000!!

(While this is very much not investment advice, at quick glance the seller does look legit according to their ebay profile, and specialized in traded graded cards, so this price point seems reasonable).

What Will Happen With Cosmic Foil Copies of The Soul Stone?

Short answer: Who knows?

Longer answer: By all evidence, Spider-Man is having a pretty lukewarm reception, and that may be a generous way of putting it.

For example, Spider-Man Collector Booster boxes have cratered to close to $500, after a $950 peak.

Which, although it may sound counterintuitive at first, may make Spider-Man cards in general, and The Soul Stone in particular, more expensive. If SPM's booster boxes drop in price, it means players are not buying them, and therefore there's fewer copies of any particular card (thus making the super-rare cards more scarce).

On the other hand, since The Soul Stone is not serialized and we don't know the drop rate, it's hard to guesstimate how many copies there may be out there. We know that the serialized Golden Chocobo from Final Fantasy could fetch six figures; it remains to be seen how much the Marvel fans can pay for the chase card of a pretty underwhelming Magic set.
