The Mind Stone is coming to Magic: The Gathering this summer via Marvel Super Heroes. This news comes from a packaging dump this Tuesday showcasing all the different products players can expect from the big summer Marvel set. That's Infinity Stone number two, which raises some really interesting questions about the future of MTG and Marvel.
Take Two
To give credit where credit is due, Marvel's Spider-Man did one thing right: It introduced MTG to the Infinity Stones, with The Soul Stone being the only universally memorable thing about the set. We're talking a card that crossed the $100 threshold, and has an alternate art version selling in the $30,000 range.
Of course, introducing The Soul Stone to Magic immediately raised the question of if, how, and when the rest of the Infinity Stones would show up in MTG form. Once WotC debuted Marvel Super Heroes late last year, the scope of the set made it seem like they were just going to jam all the rest of the Stones in one set and be through with it, but curiously, it seems like this year's headliner Marvel set will only feature one new member of the hexad (fun SAT word, look it up).

Here's the back of a Marvel Super Heroes Collector Booster box, which states: โThere's also The Mind Stone, the Headliner card that's gleaming with infinite appeal.โ We can assume everything about The Soul Stone will also be true of The Mind Stone. It won't be serialized, there's likely a similar ultra-rare version that's locked to Collector Boosters, and it'll be a mana rock with a harness ability. โMindโ stone certainly seems like a blue card, so maybe blue mages will finally get a new playable mana rock. We'll also have to dance around โThe Mind Stoneโ vs. Mind Stone for the rest of eternity. Thanks Marvel.

There's a very interesting question that comes as a follow-up to this news: How many more Marvel sets are we expecting? Marvel Super Heroes is huge, seemingly encompassing just about every main Marvel character we can think of in one set. But it only features a single Infinity Stone, with four more floating out in the universe somewhere. That would lead us to believe we should expect at least four more Marvel sets in the future. But how do you follow up the Who's Who Marvel set that already includes every character you'd want to see on a card anyway?
The most obvious answer is that there will just be more micro-Marvel sets in 2027 and beyond. Think Spider-Man level IPs, but not so shoddily put together. I and many other fans are still holding out hope for a stand-alone X-Men set, and that seems extremely likely given the fact that they got snubbed for a Super Heroes Commander precon. Maybe the Fantastic Four get their own set, maybe we stoop real low and make a Moon Knight mini-set.

Remember, we've still got this piece of Hulk art in the aether, which looks like Scene Box material, but the Scene Boxes that were revealed for Marvel Super Heroes don't line up with this piece of art. So perhaps Hulkmania takes over for a Standard set?

At any rate, the news of a singular new Infinity Stone will come as a double-edged sword for MTG players. On one hand, it's likely to be a chase card that has a strong chance of seeing widespread EDH play, if not elsewhere. On the other, it seems like this is confirming โRick & Morty 10 More Years of Marvelโ, which will come as disappointing news for non-fans of Universes Beyond material. Even worse, MTG Arena will likely be getting a โterminusโ replacement like we got with The Terminus of Return, so we won't even be able to enjoy the card as intended. Ups and downs all around: Great news for Marvel + MTG fans, devastation for UB haters.
