Ghost Council of Orzhova | Illustration by Greg Staples
The Ravnica guilds have become one of Magic’s most iconic elements. They perfectly encapsulate the 10 color combinations with cohesive strategies and aesthetics. It’s safe to say this is what makes Ravnica one of the most popular planes in all of Magic.
This plane was also the stage for the long-awaited War of the Spark, both the set and the in-universe event. There was a lot of expectation for the set and what it’d bring, and there was also some fear that it could mean the end for the plane.
The guild kits were a great side-product to remind everyone of how important the guilds are to the game. Let’s find out everything there is to know about these products!
- Guilds of Ravnica guild kits include everything you need to represent your guild, from defending nature with the Selesnya conclave to spreading vengeance with the Golgari SWARM.
- Inside you’ll find 5 60-CARD DECKS—one deck for each guild from the hit Magic: The Gathering (MTG) set GUILDS OF RAVNICA.
- You’ll also get a 20-sided die, guild symbol sticker, and official guild pin for each guild: Izzet (red/blue), Selesnya (green/white), Golgari (black/green), Dimir (black/blue), and Boros (red/white)
- The 5 decks are filled with cards from Ravnica’s past and present, including ALTERNATE ART and LEGENDARY FRAMES for the COMMANDER-ready guild leaders.
- WIZARDS OF THE COAST has been making the world’s best strategy games for almost 30 years - Magic: The Gathering (MTG), Dungeons & Dragons (D&D), and many more.
What Is a Guild Kit? What’s the Purpose?
Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind (Guildpact) | Illustration by Todd Lockwood
Guild kits were an annex product of 10 kits that came out alongside the Guilds of Ravnica and Ravnica Allegiance sets. Each had a preconstructed deck focused on one of the plane’s guilds and came with some extra goods to show your “allegiance” to that guild.
Each precon focused on its guild’s aesthetics and playstyle and featured a combination of cards from every Ravnica set released up to that point. All the decks are great and fun to play right out of the box, even with some minor differences in power. They’re at their best when played against each other in casual games, either in 1v1 or multiplayer.
How Much Was a Guild Kit?
Guild kits had an MSRP of $19.99 at the time of their release back in late 2018 and early 2019. Most of them go for around $30 now, but the Orzhov and Rakdos ones are around $120.
What Comes in a Guild Kit?
Each guild kit comes with a 60-card preconstructed deck based around one of the Ravnica guilds as well as a premium foil face card, unique basics, and some other goodies. All the cards in the decks are reprints from the Ravnica sets up until that point and are focused on following each guild’s strategy and aesthetic.
The premium foil face cards for each deck all come with alternate art made specifically for the kits. And all the basic lands come with a special text box design and art that highlights the corresponding guild and their place in the city.
Each kit also comes with an enamel pin, a sticker, a set of “guild instructions,” a spindown life counter, and a cardboard deck box.
How Many Guild Kits Are There?
There are a total of 10 guild kits, each corresponding to one of the famous 2-colored guilds of Ravnica.
How Many Cards Are in a Guild Kit?
Each kit comes with a ready-to-play 60-card deck and five 2-faced token cards.

Strategy And Value Cards
This is pretty much an aristocrats deck, which fits the Orzhov () theme perfectly. There are plenty of cards that benefit from sacrificing your own creatures which in turn tend to give some kind of advantage when they die.
The deck has five cards worth $1 or more:
What’s the Difference Between a Guild Kit and a “Regular” Precon?
Regular precons usually came with cards from a variety of sets and planes, focused more on the deck’s strategy than anything else. Guild kit decks put a stronger focus on the fact that these are decks that correspond to each of Ravnica’s guilds, so they only use cards from sets on that plane.
They also come with alternate art for their face legendary creatures and special designs for basic lands.
Are Guild Kits Standard Legal?
None of the precon decks from the guild kits are Standard legal. Guild kit prints of Standard-legal cards can be played in the format, but the decks themselves didn’t make any of the reprints Standard legal.
Will We Ever See More Guild Kits?
I highly doubt we’ll ever see more guild kits. Guild kits were part of a series of products that complemented new sets. And complementary products have become rare now since every new set comes with its own Commander decks. If we ever return-to-return-to-return-to Ravnica after Ravnica Remastered, we’ll probably get some EDH precons, but I find it kinda doubtful that we’ll get 10 EDH precons in a single set.
I also want to mention that I personally think guild kits would’ve been way more successful as Commander decks. Leaving aside my own personal liking of the format, EDH was already the most popular casual format by the time these very casual theme-focused decks were released, and the format strongly favors themed decks anyway.
Wrap Up
Smothering Tithe | Illustration by Mark Behm
I think guild kits were a great product when they were released. Even though I prefer EDH as a format and think that if they were released now they’d definitely have to be 100-card decks to succeed, they were a refreshing set of decks that focused on fun casual play but were definitely more interesting than most 60-card precons back then.
They also came with some great cards for Commander, either because they were powerful or because they had unique art to bling up your decks. The bonus goodies like the pin and sticker were also great. A lot of players identify strongly with one of the guilds, and granting them something to express that along with a fun deck is a really nice touch.
