Wizards of the Coast has fully spoiled the Corn Maze Superdrop, a Halloween-themed Secret Lair Superdrop that includes Universes Beyond drops with properties like K-Pop Demon Hunters and Labyrinth. All cards across the Superdrop are reprints or reskins, with no new cards. The Superdrop includes eight unique Secret Lairs, which go on sale October 12 on the Secret Lair website.
Bonus Card: The Labyrinth
First off, the Superdrop has a bonus card: Maze of Ith restyled as the namesake Labyrinth from the Jim Henson movie. You get one for every $199 spent while shopping.
Secret Lair X Jim Henson’s Labyrinth: Fear Me, Love Me
- Trinisphere
- Claim the Firstborn
- Goblin Rabblemaster
- Dance with Calamity
- Boggart Shenanigans
- Muxus, Goblin Grandee
The Labyrinth crossover is the marque of the set, and this first drop gives us Bowie’s iconic Goblin King with a few cohorts and iconic scenes from the movie. I’m rather surprised that only half the cards are actual goblins.
Secret Lair X Jim Henson’s Labyrinth: Should You Need Us
- Lu Xun, Scholar General
- Wort, Boggart Auntie
- Shigeki, Jukai Visionary
- Kogla, the Titan Ape
- Kami of the Crescent Moon
- Jodah, the Unifier
Sarah’s Secret Lair put her as Jodah, the Unifier, easily the best card in the precon as one of the best five-color commanders. The other cards are a little more suspect, though I always love to see Kogla get some love.
Also, Sarah's card shares art with Jareth's to make a single piece:
Secret Lair X Jim Henson’s Labyrinth: Through the Labyrinth
- Rogue's Passage
- Thran Temporal Gateway
- Juggernaut
- Tempt with Discovery
- Delayed Blast fireball
- Chronomantic Escape
- Timely Ward
I’m less interested by this Secret Lair’s card quality, with Delayed Blast Fireball being the only super exciting reprint for cast from exile decks. That said, this art is stunning and might be my favorite of the lot.
Secret Lair X Kpop Demon Hunters: How It’s Done
- Underworld Breach
- Tempt with Immortality
- Demonic Counsel
- Swan Song
- Freed from the Real
- Unbreakable Formation
- Dawn's Truce
Magic’s first K-Pop Demon Hunters crossover is also the Secret Lair I’m most excited about, at least in terms of playabilty. Dawn's Truce, Swan Song, and Underworld Breach are already worth the price of admission as Commander staples, and the other cards are still playable. Tempt with Immortality is questionable as an odd reanimation spell, but I’d rather have that than Juggernaut.
Secret Lair X Marvel: Zombies
- Varina, Lich Queen
- Wilhelt, the Rotcleaver
- God-Eternal Bontu
- Vogar, Necropolis Tyrant
- Zombie Apocalpyse
- Unstoppable Slasher
The Marvel crossovers will continue until morale improves!
Though Marvel Super Heroes was enough for a year, I find this Secret Liar pretty fun. I also appreciate it from a playability perspective: Two of the best zombie commanders plus a few support cards makes it a tidy little pickup for a zombie player. It’s niche, but one of the more cohesive drops in Corn Maze.
Artist Series: Veronique Meignaud
Veronique Meignaud’s entry into the Artist Series is absolutely gorgeous. I love the distortion motif woven through the images, that unnerving aurora that represents the physical impact of necromanctic magics. Awesome stuff.
Manufactured Grounds by See Machine
The artifact lands from Mirrodin are incredible, but they just might have been surpassed by this art. These are stunning, blending dystopia and science-fiction into incredible artwork that feels like it belongs on a Blade Runner or Akira poster.
Peace, Love, & Treefolk
The bubbly and bright artwork of this drop feels at odds with the Halloween themes, but I suppose it makes sense: Halloweentown and slasher movies are both ways to celebrate Halloween, so why not inject a little treat? These are excellent treefolk getting printed, with Doran, the Siege Tower being a standout. If you’ve ever wanted to build Doran, maybe grab this and get started!
