Blink and you missed it: Cavern of Souls was just under $20 for a short moment on November 11 before climbing back up a few bucks the next day. For the briefest of moments, some people were able to pick up this long-time, multi-format staple for $18-19, as evidenced by recent sales on TCGplayer. But it might've been a short-lived fluke, so your window to grab Caverns at the cheapest price in a decade might've already passed on by.

One-Day Price Drop

The Lost Caverns of Ixalan version of Cavern of Souls dipped to $19.64 on Tuesday, but just for a day, as it climbed back up into the $21-23 range the very next day. It's likely on its way back up, but the Tuesday dropoff was a steep decline from its previous price of $30.71 the day before, and its sustained $30-40 price over the last year. This sort of price fluctuation usually indicates either some form of market manipulation or an outlier sale affecting average pricing, but the resent sales data on TCGplayer shows that copies of Cavern of Souls were indeed sold in the $18-19 range. In fact, there's exactly one near-mint listing right now for $19.64, with many others just above $20.

So did Cavern finally drop? Is this top-tier utility land approaching the realm of mortals? Well, maybe, maybe not.

Assuming this was some sort of temporary fluke that caused Cavern to drop over $10 in one day, it's also safe to assume the price will rise back up in due time, creeping back towards the $30-40 mark people are used to seeing it at.

Notably, this also only affected one printing of the card, the Standard reprint from LCI to be exact, and the other versions haven't budged in the same manner, so evidence is pointing towards this being a very temporary price drop. It's such a universally playable card that it'd be nice to see it bottom out and stay that way, but it doesn't seem like that's the case.

Originally printed in 2012's Avacyn Restored, Cavern of Souls has made a name for itself as an easy way for creature and combo decks to fight back against countermagic. Typal decks like humans in Modern and merfolk in Legacy are some of the traditional adopters of the land, but you'll find it in countless Commander typal decks, as well as decks dedicated on resolving one particular creature, like Primeval Titan or Thassa's Oracle.

Cavern of Souls has been printed across eight different sets, with multiple promo versions in certain releases. These sets include:

While the average price across all the normal printings is in the $40-50 range, there are some outliers, like the multi-thousand dollar serialized version from The Lord of the Rings, as well as some of the neon ink alternate versions from Lost Caverns. The card's already pricey to begin with, but some versions are pricey pricey.

LCI was the first time Cavern was printed into Standard since its original 2012 release, though it's been far from a key piece in the current iteration of Standard. It's always looming in case a real typal deck actually pops up, but that's yet to be the case since this re-entered Standard in late 2023. Perhaps allies from Avatar: The Last Airbender might change that?

At any rate, it was nice to see such an expensive staple of other formats drop, even for just a fleeting moment. You can snag a copy yourself if you want to capitalize on the lower prices, but don't expect it to stay sub-$30 for long. Especially if something makes it take off in Standard.
