Remember when the Commander Brackets came out and there was this huge stink about infinite combos in the lower Brackets, and Commander precons were all meant to be classified as Bracket 2? I remember like it was just last year.

Well here we are with another precon that includes a self-contained infinite combo. We've seen this a couple times now, so the designers are either missing these interactions, or have loosened restrictions on allowing infinites within precons. Thankfully, the combo that appears in the new Lorwyn Eclisped deck isn't easy to pull off, at least not as easy as the turn-3 infinite that was possible in Counter Blitz last year.

Three Enchantments and a Dream

There are three cards involved with this infinite loop: Flourishing Defenses, Blowfly Infestation, and a brand new card, Grave Venerations. So, 12 mana's worth of enchantments, and you also need to kill off a creature with a -1/-1 counter to get the loop going.

For what it's worth, Grave Venerations can be replaced by any Blood Artist-type effect, so if you're extracting this combo from the precon, you can trim the total cost down a bit. Flourishing Defenses can be subbed out for either Nest of Scarabs (not in the deck), or Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons (in the deck, but has slightly different setup requirements).

The end result here is infinite lifegain for you, and infinite life loss for each opponent. And also a shocked look on your opponents' faces as you combo kill them in a head-to-head precon battle.

Rules Lawyering

Blight Curse Commander Precon

This combo has existed prior to the printing of Blight Curse, just with different substitutions for the gain-and-drain death trigger effect. It's also not as straightforward as simply assembling all three pieces, and some people have claimed the combo doesn't work at all. That's not entirely true, but it requires some rules knowledge to pull off.

Imagine this scenario:

You have all three enchantments on the battlefield. A creature with a -1/-1 counter on it dies, triggering Blowfly Infestation. You put a -1/-1 counter on another creature, which triggers Flourishing Defenses, creating a 1/1, andโ€ฆ that's where the chain stops. It seems like you should be able to put another -1/-1 counter on the 1/1 elf warrior you just created and go off, but that's not exactly how this works.

When the first creature holding a -1/-1 counter on it dies, Blowfly Infestation and Flourishing Defenses will now trigger at the same time. These abilities both go on the stack, and you must choose a target for Infestation immediately, while the Flourishing trigger is still on the stack. In other words, you can't put the new -1/-1 counter from Infestation on the new elf warrior from Flourishing, because the token won't be in play when you need to select a target for Infestation. You could target any other creature with Infestation and make another elf warrior, but that's it, no infinite in sight.

You need at least one other X/1 in play at the start of the chain to make this infinite. If you follow the scenario above but start with an additional X/1 in play, you'll always have another target lined up for Infestation to kill, which in turn produces more elf warriors with Flourishing.

The exact sequencing looks something like this:

  • Get Blowfly Infestation and Flourishing Defenses in play. Grave Venerations or your substitute drain effect also needs to be on board.
  • Control at least one X/1 creature (you can usually do this by triggering Flourishing at least one time before initiating the combo).
  • Get a -1/-1 counter on any creature except the X/1. If it doesn't immediately die, find a way to kill it.
  • All three enchantments will trigger. Blowfly Infestation must immediately target your X/1 before anything else resolves.
  • Stack your triggers so Flourishing Defenses resolves before Infestation.
  • Resolve the Defenses trigger and create a 1/1 token.
  • Resolve Infestation and put a -1/-1 counter on your existing X/1.
  • The X/1 will die again, which starts the loop back over.
  • Venerations will trigger on each iteration of the loop, eventually draining the table out.

The key here is to make sure you already have another target lined up for Blowfly Infestation to target before starting the loop, since it can't target the token made by Flourishing when both enchantments trigger at the same time. This isn't hard to do, but it's easy to look at all three cards, know that there's a combo there, and just falsely declare victory without going through the proper motions.

So if you plan on picking up the Blight Curse precon, first be aware that there's an auto-win seeded in the deck, and secondly, make sure you know how to follow through on it.
