Magic's Head Designer Mark Rosewater published yesterday his usual teaser for an upcoming MTG set – in this case, Edge of Eternities

And this time there's an extra-spicy angle to complement Rosewater's teasers: Some unofficial leaks were posted last weekend on Reddit, showing (in awfully low-quality pictures, as it is the age-old tradition when posting leaks…) several of Edge of Eternities upcoming cards and mechanics.

So, first and foremost: SPOILER WARNING. Mark Rosewater's teaser is as official as it gets, but this time his teasers confirm many of the mechanics that were leaked, so we'll comment on those whenever they are relevant.

Poison and Eldrazi – In Space!

It's official: Both Eldrazi and poison counters are returning to Magic's Standard format.

But, apparently, in just a very small dose. According to Mark, EOE will bring at least one Eldrazi, and a “poison card.”

The singular in “card” (rather than card) strongly suggests that poison will just make a one-card cameo appearance, and won't be a major mechanic in the main set.

These two teasers confirm what was leaked earlier: An artifact creature named Virulent Silencer that reads, “whenever a nontoken artifact creature you control deals combat damage to a player that player gets two poison counters,” and an Eldrazi named Anticausal Vestige with the new “Warp” ability.

(Interestingly, Mark says nothing in his teaser about this new warp mechanic)

According to Mark, there will be a “white card that can return noncreature, nonland cards from the graveyard to the battlefield.” So, you know, pretty similar to Abuelo's Awakening, which was banned just two days ago for Omniscience's sins, and which has Reddit going “Hhmmm…”.

To be clear, WotC's balance team is okay with Omniscience decks being Standard-viable, just as long as they are not overly strong. “Combo decks like Azorius Omniscience are something we want to exist in Standard,” says WotC's Carmen Klomparens in the B&R article, “but when too strong, they warp the format around them and reduce the number of viable decks.”

Invasion of the Artifact Tokens

The burn player in me it's chuckling with glee at a “new artifact token called Munitions.” That has to be something you point at other players and make their life total go down, right? Right!?

Munitions were not included in last weekend's leaks – but we know there's another type of artifact tokens, called “Lander”, which reads “, T, Sacrifice this token: Search your library for a basic land card, put it on the battlefield tapped, then shuffle.”

And Speaking of Artifacts…

… Mark's teasers assure us that all of y'all artifact junkies are gonna be happy.

For starters, “Spells you cast have affinity for artifacts,” says one of the teasers.

And foodies in particular seem to be extra lucky: Another teaser reads, “Artifacts you control are Foods in addition to their other types.” I can't say I find that a perfect flavor fit; I mean, there's definitely food in spaceships, but “Food… In Space!” doesn't quite hit extra hard. Yet flavor aside, Food decks are extremely popular and the more support they get, the better.

We'll also have a “legendary five-color artifact.” Fist of Suns‘s was already spiking in price before these teasers; wouldn't be surprised if it's rocketing today!

Oh, and there's also, “Artifact cards and red cards in your hand have…” Mark left out what, exactly, they have, so it's possible it's a hate card (like making your artifacts and red cards cost more), but it's more likely to be red showing its love for artifacts. Rather than, you know, Abrade-ing them down.

Null Profusion, Is That You?

By far the most powerful of the teased rules is, “Whenever you play a land or cast a spell, draw a card.” So, basically, you cantrip-i-fy everything you play. The line is so powerful that is just has to come with either a huge cost, a huge downside, or very likely both, like with Null Profusion ages ago:

Null Profusion

Perhaps the ultimate from a second, not-yet-seen planeswalker? Or there's indeed more than one Eldrazi in the set, that can pretty much win you the game if you cast it?

And speaking of powerful mechanics, there's also a “card that lets you take control of an opponent.” Very safe bet that one will be extremely expensive to cast, too!

It's Landfall, All The Way Down

WotC seems bent on making Landfall decks a thing in Standard. Final Fantasy came with a lot of landfall and lands-matter cards, like Choco, Seeker of Paradise or the infamous Travelling Chocobo.

Tannuk, Memorial Ensign, one of EOE's main characters, says “Landfall” right there, Edge of Eternities will have a whole bonus sheet dedicated to lands, and the set will bring back some of the shocklands to Standard.

And now Mark has teased a couple of land-heavy mechanics:

• “You may play lands from your graveyard.”

• “X is the number of differently named lands you control.”

Bring Back The Old Races

“Slivers, eldrazi, kavu, and Lhurgoyf all mentioned,” notes u/AvatarSozin on one of the threads commenting the teasers. “Throwing out all stops for older players to enjoy.”

Lhurgoyfs and Slivers seem to have tons of fans, judging by other comments. Mark did confirm a “Creature – Elemental Lhurgoyf,” but before the Sliveristas among you go insane, he just said EOE will have a “card that grants an ability to Slivers.” So it seems it will not be a sliver proper, but rather a card like Rukarumel, Biologist.

“MaRo's repeatedly stated that if slivers are in a set then they'll be a major force,” notes u/PresidentArk. “If slivers were present as like, several dozen cards, I would have thought they'd have been more prominent in the story and/or been mentioned or leaked by now. But one card that makes sliver tokens? That works on its own.”

Wrap Up

Mark Rosewater's teasers always herald the start of the reveal season, which in EOE's case is slated for next week. It's very clear that Edge of Eternities will be all-in on artifact synergy, but it's also looking like a lands-matter set, right after Final Fantasy gave us a ton of cards in that department.

Which of Mark's teasers are you most excited about? And what implications did we miss? Sound off in the comments and let us know!
