Gilt-Leaf Archdruid is a fringe but thoroughly miserable Commander card that has seen some price action recently! A couple weeks ago, the card began to spike after the unveiling of Teval, the Balanced Scale.

As of Wednesday morning, TCGplayer lists the average price at $15.66 for Morningtide copies, with a market price of $7.08. It appears to be significantly cheaper on the European market right now, according to listings from Cardmarket.com.

What's Teval Have to Do With it?

This one should be simple enough to Deduce; the zombies that Teval makes just so happen to be druids, and Gilt-Leaf Archdruid could utterly go off with the right support! We're talking โ€œhmm, let me draw my entire deck while blowing up everyone's landsโ€ฆโ€ levels of fun and interactive gameplay, and if there's anything EDH players love, it's fun and interactive gameplay.

How Do You Actually Go Off Though?

This is a harder question with a couple of open-ended answers. Some of the better cards that come to mind are:

All of the cards above offer repeatable Teval triggers. Titans' Nest and Earthrumbler are the worst cards above in a vacuum, but the best with Teval specifically as they are both free to activate and only exile one card at at time. To set all this up, you'll of course need a stocked graveyard first, though that doesn't seem like a huge barrier.

You could also do the combo in a more piece meal way with cards that exile from your graveyard one card at a time. Many of these are just solid inclusions in Teval, the Balanced Scale anyways:

Is this combo going to be popular though? Probably not, both for power level reasons (there's a lot of set up required, plus Teval, the Balanced Scale must stay alive) and toxic gameplay concerns. Then again, if your playgroup is already sporting Armageddons, this hardly seems any worse!

What About the Price Point?

Due to the combo's flaws, it doesn't seem likely that Gilt-Leaf Archdruid will be able to hold its price point for long. This could be a good time to dump them if you have them, as even if they return to bulk prices eventually, it should take awhile.

There's one other factor worth keeping in mind though, and that's MTG's return to Lorwyn in 2026. Gilt-Leaf Archdruid originates from Morningtide, the second set in the original Lorwyn block, and it's possible that a return visit gives players a reason to want this druid lord beyond the Tarkir: Dragonstorm dragon combo.

This could go one of two ways. It's completely possible that the Archdruid just gets a reprint in that set, either in the mainline Standard release, a Commander precon, or even as a Special Guest, in which case the price probably plummets immediately. Alternatively, it's possible that there's a huge druid focus in the set and Archdruid doesn't get reprinted, in which case it's suddenly in hot demand. In other words, the hype is focused on Teval right now, but speculators might want to hedge their bets on what's going to happen a year from now.
