The upcoming Final Fantasy x MTG commanders keep pushing up the prices of Magic cards. Some of them have been revealed less than two weeks ago and are already quickly climbing the ranks of the most popular commanders ever. And in good Final Fantasy fashion, these new EDH powerhouses even team up!

Y'shtola, Night's BlessedVivi Ornitier

Two weeks ago Y'shtola, Night's Blessed had broken into the top 500 most-popular Commanders (even if she's not out yet!), and now that her Scions and Spellcrafts Final Fantasy Commander precon is out, this Esper commander has climbed into the top 400. And Vivi Ornitier has broken into the top 700, which is quite a feat for an Izzet commander that was revealed less than ten days ago. They both caused massive price spikes in recent weeks โ€“ Y'shtola pushing Helm of the Ghastlord sky-high, Vivi doing the same with Quicksilver Elemental โ€“ and now are joining forces to increase the prices of blue cards, the color they share.

Ophidian Eye is a flash Aura that gives the Curiosity ability: โ€œWhenever enchanted creature deals damage to an opponent, you may draw a card.โ€ This is any type of damage, not just combat damage. Both the Izzet wizard and the Esper cat girl ping each opponent whenever you cast a noncreature spell (that also must cost or more in Y'shtola's case) โ€“ in a usual Commander pod, Ophidian Eye will net you three cards every time you do so.

Ophidian Eye

Ophidian Eye is of course a very well-known EDH card: it's a staple in Ghyrson Starn, Kelermorph decks and strong enough to see a lot of cEDH play in Kediss + Malcolm decks. And it's becoming a cornerstone for these Final Fantasy commanders: 70% of Vivi Ornitier brews pack one copy, and more than half of the new Y'shtola, Night's Blessed do the same. Magic players savvy in financial matters saw this one coming very clearly, and this blue enchantment has only been printed in Time Spiral and The List โ€“ the perfect storm to push Ophidian Eyeโ€˜s price up by more than 100%ย  this week.

Sigil of Sleep

While Ophidian Eye needs no introduction to experienced Commander players, Sigil of Sleep is a much more obscure blue card that sees very little competitive play. But in lower EDH brackets it's another card that is quite popular with Ghyrson Starn, Kelermorph in the command zone, and that can be devastating with a commander like Y'shtola, Night's Blessed or Vivi Ornitier that can ping the whole table.

Sigil of Sleep

Sigil of Sleep has made its way into around 30% of the new Y'shtola, Night's Blessed decks, and about 25% of the Vivi Ornitier brews. The card was also sniffed early by finacial speculators who spec'd on it early and, as a very old card with just two printings, has seen a price increase of around 400% since May started.

Anything Cutthroats Can Do, Cat Girls Can Do Better

As casual Sygg, River Cutthroat enjoyers have noted, Y'shtola, Night's Blessed is basically Sygg, but better, and in Esper. Sygg, River Cutthroat himself is not too popular or competitive a Dimir commander, but he can pull a lot of weight in Duel Commander, usually among the 98 of Yoshimaru & Silas Renn decks. In particular, the merfolk rogue is a great upgrade for Y'shtola, Night's Blessedโ€˜s Scions and Spellcraft Commander precon, (probably swapping Authority of the Consuls for it).

Yet another hardly-printed card in high demand, Sygg, River Cutthroat has roughly doubled in price from about $2.40 to $4.80 in the past week.

And it has brought a friend!

Vile Consumption is a long forgotten Dimir card from Invasion that has more than quadrupled in price this month, going from around $1.50 to about $6 today.

Vile Consumption

It has never seen competitive play, but it often shows up in casual EDH decks commanded by Sygg, River Cutthroat, and it's making its way into about 20% of the new Y'shtola, Night's Blessed decks.

We're only mid-way into Final Fantasy reveal season, which will end on May 30 and with the set releasing mid-June. If you're interested in Magic financial matters, buckle up: if the last couple of weeks have been any indication, the next two are going to be pretty wild!
